Warning Signs To Watch Out For
The risk of having any of these complications is extremely low, Chandrasekhar says. And thanks to advances in treatments, complications have become even more rare.
But there are a few signs to be on the lookout for. Pain that continues to get worse, changes in your mental state, or a very high spiking fever are all indications theres potentially something serious going on, Chandrasekhar says.
To better your chances of recovery, visit your doctor as soon as you notice any of these symptoms.

What Causes Labyrinthitis Is It Contagious
The exact cause of labyrinthitis is unknown. It may be caused by swelling or problems with the nerve inside the brain responsible for balance and hearing. Labyrinthitis also may occur during or after a viral infection. Viruses associated with labyrinthitis include influenza, herpes viruses, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis, Epstein-Barr virus, and polio.
Rarely, other ear problems like barotrauma or otosclerosis can cause labyrinthitis.
Labyrinthitis itself is not contagious, however, viral infections that lead to labyrinthitis are.
Signs Of Ear Infection In Babies And Toddlers
Ear infections, particularly middle ear infections, are especially common in babies and toddlers due to the relative narrowness of their Eustachian tube.
Signs and symptoms of an ear infection in babies and toddlers may include:
- High temperature
- Discharge from the ear
Ear infections in babies and toddlers will usually clear up on their own, without specific treatment. However, for babies and toddlers experiencing recurrent infections that do not respond well to antibiotics, a doctor may recommend a minor surgical procedure known as a myringotomy.
The procedure involves making a small incision in the eardrum to allow fluids to drain out a small ventilation tube, often called grommets, may also be inserted. This ear tube will typically fall out on its own in around 6 to 18 months.
Although a myringotomy and grommets are generally effective at reducing the number of ear infections experienced by young children, they can still occur. The main sign of an ear infection after tubes have been inserted is the discharge of yellowish fluid from the ear, which will commonly not be accompanied by pain or fever. Antibiotics will typically be prescribed to treat the ear infection.

Ear Infection Home Remedies
There are some home remedies to help your child’s ear pain. Ear drops can bring relief, but these should not be used without checking with your child’s doctor first. Over-the-counter pain and fever medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen are used. However, you should never give aspirin to children. Warm washcloths applied to the outside of the ear may be helpful in reliving some pain. Gargling with salt water may help soothe an aggravated throat and possibly clear the Eustachian tubes. A few drops of warmed olive oil in the ears may soothe ear pain, but it is suggested to speak with your child’s doctor beforehand.
Treatment For Inner Ear Infection
Infection in the ear is likely to occur in any of the three parts of the ear outer, middle and inner parts of the ear. Also, infection in the ear is a serious matter.
Therefore, it is important to treat the infection in order to prevent complications, which includes damaging or rupturing the eardrum and much more.
Diagnosis is a prior process of treatment. An audiologist will observe your ears with an otoscope. Then it will be followed by the hearing test. Your treatment will depend on the underlying causes of infections.
Individuals who have been diagnosed with an inner ear infection are advised to go for proper treatment.
Availing treatment for infection of the inner ear is mandatory for both children and adults. This is greatly achieved by seeking a professional doctor at a healthcare institution in your area.
In addition to using antibiotics, other medications may also be given to persons having an infection in the inner ear in order to reduce swelling and inflammation.
These are useful to treat an inner ear infection, to reduce swelling and inflammation, to treat nausea and vomiting, and to help eliminate dizziness and vertigo.
Following are some methods you can use to treat your inner ear infection:

What Is Vestibular Neuritis
Vestibular neuritis is a disorder that affects the nerve of the inner ear called the vestibulocochlear nerve. This nerve sends balance and head position information from the inner ear to the brain. When this nerve becomes swollen , it disrupts the way the information would normally be interpreted by the brain.
Vestibular neuritis can occur in people of all ages, but is rarely reported in children.
The vestibulocochlear nerve sends balance and head position information from the inner ear to the brain. When the nerve becomes swollen , the brain cant interpret the information correctly. This results in a person experiencing such symptoms as dizziness and vertigo.
What Kind Of Physical Therapy Works To Reduce Vertigo
Its called vestibular rehabilitation, and it is a relatively new form of physical therapy. Not all physical therapists are trained in the practice. Typically the exercises consist of movements that initially make the vertigo worse and balance tasks that are quite difficult. By doing these repetitively, the balance system in the brain learns to function better. Common exercises include moving the eyes from side to side, rotating the head from side to side, rotating the head from side to side while walking down a corridor, and things like this.

What To Do If Youre Experiencing Severe Nausea And Dizziness
Sinus infections can become chronic sinusitis. If you have sinusitis for fewer than four weeks, doctors consider it an acute condition. However, if the problem persists for more than 12 weeks, you have chronic sinusitis. You may also have recurrent sinusitis, which is a sinus infection that happens multiple times throughout the year. While acute cases may resolve themselves, you may need medical assessment and care if you experience any of the following:
- Severe nausea
- Sinus infection symptoms for more than 12 weeks
- Multiple sinus infections in a year
- A fever that lasts for more than a week
A doctor can help treat the sinus infection causing severe dizziness or nausea. Additionally, a physician can prescribe stronger medications for these conditions than you can get over the counter. To get relief from your persistent or severe symptoms, either book an assessment or request an appointment for a telehealth visit.
Symptoms Of Inner Ear Infection
Since the inner ear plays key roles in both hearing and balance, any issues with these senses could be linked to an infection in this area. Infections in other parts of the ear are less likely to affect your hearing or balance, but the other symptoms can be similar.
Possible signs of an inner ear infection or inflammation include:
- Vertigo, a sensation that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving around even when everything is still
- Having trouble balancing or walking normally
- Feeling like the ear is full or blocked
- Tinnitus or ringing in your ears
- Fluid or pus coming from your ear
Inner ear infections can also be linked to other symptoms, depending on the source of the infection. For example, if the infection spread to the inner ear from your airways, you might also have a runny nose. In some cases, these other symptoms might be fading when the problems in your inner ear begin, because the original infection might have been eliminated. You could also have more generalised symptoms of infection, such as a fever.

Can Tinnitus Be Prevented
Repeated loud noise exposure can be a cause of tinnitus as well as hearing loss. Loud music may cause short term symptoms, but repeated occupational exposure requires less intense sound levels to cause potential hearing damage leading to tinnitus. Minimizing sound exposure, therefore, decreases the risk of developing tinnitus. Sound protection equipment, like acoustic ear-muffs, may be appropriate at work and at home when exposed to loud noises.
A variety of medications may be ototoxic and cause tinnitus. If tinnitus develops while you are taking a medication, stop the medication and discuss other options with your health-care professional.

Ear Infection Symptoms: Babies
Ear infections aren’t always apparent in babies and children who are too young to describe their pain. They may signify ear pain by pulling on or fussing with their ear. They may just be irritable, or not eating or sleeping well. Babies sometimes refuse to drink from a bottle because swallowing hurts their ears. Ear infection symptoms in babies may include:

What Causes Inner Ear Infections
Infections can happen in any part of the ear, including the inner section. When the inner ear is infected, the problem is sometimes known as labyrinthitis.
The infection can be caused by a virus or bacteria, which usually reach the inner ear after affecting another part of your body.
- Viral Infections: Lots of different viruses can affect the inner ear, including the common cold and flu. The infection usually spread to the inner ear from other parts of the body , so you may start to develop symptoms related to your inner ear after noticing cold-like symptoms. Antibiotics cant help with this type of infection.
- Bacterial Infections: Bacterial infections are less common, especially in adults, but they can happen. Bacteria are more likely to get into the inner ear if the membranes separating it from the inner ear are broken, which might happen if you have a middle ear infection. If the infection is caused by bacteria then taking antibiotics might help.
In some cases, the problem that we call an inner ear infection isnt actually an infection at all. Labyrinthitis can happen when the inner ear becomes inflamed for other reasons, for example if you have an autoimmune condition that causes your immune system to mistakenly attack the tissue. You might need to get treatment for this underlying condition in order to prevent the inner ear problems from returning.
How Your Body ‘compensates’
When one part of your vestibular system is afflicted, the other parts can usually compensate for the deficit. Once the system is under too much stress, though, that compensation may fall short. For example, if you must take an ototoxic drug that destroys the balance organs of the inner ear, you can still stay quite balanced as long as your eyes are open. However, when you are asked to close your eyes, you may find it quite difficult to stay standing upright.

Inner Ear Infection Causing Vertigo
Spotting an ear infection isnt difficult. The ear is a sensitive area, which means infections are painful and disruptive. But when the symptoms of your ear infection also include vertigo or some sort of imbalance, the infection likely progressed to your inner ear. Inner ear infections and vertigo are the results of two conditions: Labyrinthitis and Vestibular Neuritis.

Preparing For Your Appointment
To prepare for your appointment, see the topicMaking the Most of Your Appointment.
You can help your doctor diagnose and treat your condition by being prepared to answer the following questions:
- Have you done anything recently that may have caused your ear canal to become infected, such as cleaning your ears or swimming?
- Have you had a history of ear itching, pain, or other symptoms? Describe your symptom:
- When did it start?
- Do you have problems with the inside or the outside of your ear?
- Are your symptoms constant, or do they come and go?
- Does anything make your ear feel better or worse?
Dizziness Vertigo And Imbalance
There are many causes of dizziness, including:
Stress and anxiety can cause hyperventilation syndrome, whereby over-breathing reduces carbon dioxide levels, which affects the free calcium levels in the body resulting in dizziness.
Vertigo is defined as an illusion of movement and can be indicative of an inner ear problem. It may be associated with feeling off-balance , a change in hearing, tinnitus, nausea and vomiting.
One of the most common vestibular causes of vertigo is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo which can occur following a head injury, secondary to other vestibular conditions including vestibular neuronitis and Ménières disease, or it can happen spontaneously. In this condition, debris usually in the posterior semi-circular canal moves when the head is in certain positions, which induces the symptoms of vertigo that can last up to a minute, but typically occurs for only 1530 seconds,. This is frequently triggered when the patient turns over in bed or looks up or down.
Patients who experience vertigo and who have associated nausea and vomiting that is severe enough for them to require bed rest before gradually mobilising again over days or weeks may have vestibular neuronitis or labyrinthitis .

What Is A Balance Rehabilitation Program
If balance and dizziness problems last longer than a few weeks, a vestibular physical therapy program may be recommended. The goal of this program is to retrain the brain to adapt to the changes in balance that a patient experiences.
As the first step in this program, a vestibular physical therapist evaluates the parts of the body that affect balance. These areas include:
- The legs
- The eyes
- The ears
- The body as a whole
Based on the results of the evaluation, an exercise program is designed specifically for the patient. Some examples of balance exercises:
Overall body posture balance exercises:
- Exercises that shift body weight forward and backward and from side-to-side while standing
Eye/ear head-turn exercises:
- Focusing eyes on an object while turning head from side to side
- Keeping vision steady while making rapid side-to-center head turns
- Focusing eyes on a distant object, with brief glances at floor, while continuing to walk toward the object
The key to a successful balance rehabilitation program is to repeat the set of personalized exercises 2 to 3 times a day. By repeating these exercises, the brain learns how to adjust to the movements that cause dizziness and imbalance. Many of the exercises can be done at home, which will speed recovery. Vestibular rehabilitation specialists provide specific instructions on how to perform the exercises, identify which exercises can be done at home, and provide other home safety tips to prevent falls.

Why Do You Have An Allergic Reaction
When a foreign substance, such as pollen. causes hypersensitivity, your immune system responds by producing antibodies that release histamine. Histamines cause itching, mucus and sometimes swelling. Allergies can occur year-round, but for many people pollen and grass allergies are more likely to occur in the spring or fall.
How Is Vestibular Neuritis Diagnosed
In most patients, a diagnosis of vestibular neuritis can be made with an office visit to a vestibular specialist. These specialists include an otologist or neurotologist . Referral to an audiologist may be made to perform tests to further evaluate hearing and vestibular damage. Tests to help determine if symptoms might be caused by vestibular neuritis include hearing tests, vestibular tests and a test to determine if a portion of the vestibulocochlear nerve has been damaged. Another specific test, called a head impulse test, examines how difficult it is to maintain focus on objects during rapid head movements. The presence of nystagmus, which is uncontrollable rapid eye movement, is a sign of vestibular neuritis.
If symptoms continue beyond a few weeks or become worse, other tests are performed to determine if other illnesses or diseases are causing the same symptoms. Some of these other possible health conditions include stroke, head injury, brain tumor, and migraine headache. To rule out some of the disorders of the brain, an MRI with dye may be ordered.
