Playing in the water can be fun for people of all ages. While summer is a great time to enjoy swimming to its fullest, all of the splashing around can occasionally lead to water getting trapped in your ears.;Symptoms include a feeling of fullness in the ear canal;and a sensation that water is jostling around in your ear. It can happen in one or both ears.;

Sometimes tilting your head to the sideis all it takes to remove water in your ears.

When the water doesnt trickle out on its own, it may lead to a case of otitis externa, an ear infection also known as swimmers ear.

How Can I Help My Child Feel Better

Ear infections should be treated by a doctor. If not, the ear pain will get worse and the infection may spread. At home, acetaminophen or ibuprofen may ease discomfort.

Follow the health care provider’s instructions for using ear drops and oral antibiotics, if they are prescribed. It’s important to keep water out of your child’s ear during the entire course of treatment. You can use a cotton ball as an earplug to protect your child’s ear from water during showering or bathing.

Causes Of Swollen Ear Canal

There can be several factors that may lead to the condition of the swollen ear canal. There are some factors that can cause and worsen the severity of infection causing swelling in the ear canal.

Bacterial infection can be a cause of swollen ear canal. The infection in the ear canal resulting into swollen ear canal can be caused due to bacterial infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosin,3 staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae.4

Seborrheic dermatitis5 can also cause swollen ear canal. This is a type of skin condition in which the skin tends to become irritated due to coating of mucous over it. In the case of swollen ear canal, a greasy substance is secreted inside the ear. This covering of mucous like substance results into seborrheic dermatitis that further leads to infection.

Another cause of swollen ear canal is a middle ear infection. The internal structure of the ear is divided into three segments: external ear, middle ear and the inner ear. Any type of infection in the middle ear can block the ear canal, resulting into infection.

Fungal infection may cause swollen ear canal. Fungal infection in the ear is also a common cause of swollen ear canal. The common fungus that can lead to fungal infection are candida albicans and other varieties of aspergillus.

Symptoms Of Swimmers Ear

Pain may not be much noticeable initially, but it becomes severe if the swimmers ear remains untreated. Symptoms range from mild to severe, and one must know which symptoms are for mild, moderate, and severe.

Symptoms of mild infection:

  • Itching in the ear canal
  • The mild red color of ear
  • Clear and Odorless fluid drainage
  • Slight discomfort

These signs of temporary hearing loss may go unnoticed as the pain is not realized. People mistook fluid drainage for water pouring after a day of swimming or exposure to water.

People with a high tolerance may not even notice it. You may suffer from the moderate painful bout of swimmers ear, which comes with the following symptoms that are more progressive and painful:

  • Increased pain in and around the ear
  • Inability to hear properly
  • The bright red color in the ear
  • Fluid drainage from the ear
  • Leakage of fluid in the ear
  • Itching with more discomfort

These symptoms should not be ignored, but some people confuse it with a mild ear infection. Consult a doctor as soon as you notice these symptoms.

Symptoms could get worse leading to the severe bout of swimmers ear which can be very painful. The symptoms may migrate to the other parts of the body and are not easily missed.

Consult the doctor as soon as you notice the following symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Severe pain in the ear
  • Hearing difficulty
  • Swelling of the inner or outer ear
  • Redness in and around the ear
  • Swelling of lymph node
  • Pain that migrates to the cheek, head, neck or even to the face

    Is It Risky When Water Is Stuck In Ears

    Sometimes. Your ears secrete a waxy, water repellent-substance known as cerumen , so most of the time water will gently trickle out on its own. When it doesnt, bacteria may begin to grow and cause swimmers ear.;

    Favorable environments for bacterial growth include wet and humid conditions, scratches or abrasions inside the ear canal or reactions from allergies and skin conditions.

    Initial symptoms of swimmers ear may be mild and include:

    • Itching and redness inside the ear canal
    • Mild discomfort
    • Drainage of clear, odorless fluid

    If you experience these symptoms, make an appointment to see your family doctor immediately. If water has been stuck in your ears for days or even weeks, also see your doctor.

    When To Call Your Doctor

    Even if you are unable to get the water out of your ears with one of the methods listed above, your ears will usually clear it out on their own within a day or two.

    You should call your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:

    • Ear pain
    • Redness, itchiness, or flaking skin in the ear canal
    • Sudden or persistent hearing loss
    • Drainage from the ear that is bloody, yellow, green, milky, or foul-smelling
    • Any other symptoms that seem unusual or do not go away

    It should also be noted that fluid can be trapped behind the eardrum. This is not the same as getting water in the outer ear canal after going swimming or taking a bath, though both conditions can cause similar symptoms. Fluid in the middle ear is much more common in small children than in adults, although it can occur in all age groups.

    If you have fluid behind the eardrum, you won’t be able to get rid of it with one of the methods listed in this article. Your doctor may choose to observe you and see if the fluid goes away on its own , or you may need the surgical placement of ventilation tubes.

    How Is Fluid From The Ear Treated

    Treatment for fluid from the ear will depend on what is causing the problem.

    Ear infections in children usually clear up in a couple of days without treatment. Because they are often caused by a virus rather than by bacteria, antibiotics will usually not work. Usually children with otitis media are given pain relief for 48 hours and then antibiotics only if the symptoms have not cleared up. If you have a child who is unwell with vomiting and fever, if they are under 6 months old, or if they are an Aboriginal child or Torres Strait Islander, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics more quickly.;

    Usually injuries to the ear heal without being treated. Sometimes you will need to take antibiotics if your doctor thinks there is a risk of infection due to the injury.;

    Swimmers ear needs to be treated to stop the infection from spreading. You will usually need antibiotic ear drops for about a week.

    How Swimming Affects Your Ears

    Swimming can pose some significant risks to your ears, as it can cause otitis externa, also known as swimmers ear. This condition is caused by exposure to bacteria found in natural bodies of water. It can also be contracted in swimming pools or hot tubs that arent properly sanitized or treated with chlorine. When contaminated water becomes trapped in your inner ear, the bacteria can breed and cause an infection. Such infections can potentially damage the fragile hair cells inside the ear responsible for transmitting sound, leading to hearing loss.

    Earwax can be a problem for many people. Although earwax should leave your ears on its own, it can sometimes build up and cause your ears to feel blocked or even painful. This might lead to you to try and find at-home solutions, such as using cotton buds to try and remove the wax. You might also sometimes be tempted to put your fingers or other things in your ears when you feel an itch. It can be irritating and scratching an itch is often the fastest way to deal with it. Complications Related To Swimmers Ear

    Can loud music damage your hearing? – Heather Malyuk

    It is important to consult a doctor and have an audiology test as soon as you witness any of the symptoms of swimmers ear.

    The complications become severe if left untreated. These complications are not very common but can occur to anyone.

    • Temporary hearing loss
    • Long-term and frequent ear infections
    • Infections of the deep tissue
    • Cartilage and bone damage
    • Infection that gets into the brain

    The temporary hearing loss doesnt mean going completely deaf after an occurrence of a swimmers ear infection, but it can be of any version of hearing loss.

    This means that your hearing loss can be a little or a lot as you suffer from your infection, and its difficult to live without the full hearing capability.

    How Does Ear Popping Work

    The Eustachian tube supplies air to the middle ear. This helps maintain equal amounts of pressure on both sides of the eardrum.

    If theres a difference in pressure, your eardrum may bulge inward or outward in response. This causes that familiar feeling of fullness in the ear.

    Popping your ears helps move the eardrum back into place, alleviating the imbalance of pressure, and eliminating or reducing your discomfort.

    The Eustachian tube typically opens automatically when you swallow, blow your nose, or yawn. When you do these motions, youll often hear a clicking, or popping, sound. The sound is caused by air entering the middle ear through the Eustachian tube.

    If the tube does not open easily, it may be obstructed. This can be caused by fluid, mucus, or earwax.
