How Do You Curse In Portuguese

Easy: you acquaint yourself with some basic building block words and just stack them together. The more elaborate you get, the more you raise the stakes.

Some basic terms you should familiarize yourself with include foda-se , caralho , and filho da puta . If youre feeling extra passionate, you can just roll them all together in one stream-of-consciousness expression of angst.

Remember that cursing is an emotional art, and thus doesnt have to expressly make sense. In Portugal, you can say cona da mãe street, which literally translates to your mothers vagina street. Why shouldnt that have an address?

Have Men Always Sworn More Than Women And If So Why

Pin on sign language

Definitely not! Historians of the English language describe how women were equally praised for their command of exceedingly expressive insults and swearing, right up to the point in 1673 when a book by Richard Allestree was published titled The Ladies Calling. Allestree says that women who swear are acting in a way that is biologically incompatible with being a woman and, as a result, will begin to take on masculine characteristics, like growing facial hair or becoming infertile. He wrote, There is no sound more odious to the ears of God than an oath in the mouth of a woman.

Today we are horribly still in the same place on men versus women swearing. Although women are still considered to swear less than men, we know from studies that they dont. They swear just as much as men. But attitudinal surveys show that both men and women tend to judge womens swearing much more harshly. And that judgement can have serious implications. For example, when women with breast cancer or arthritis swear as a result of their condition, theyre much more likely to lose friends, particularly female friends. Whereas men who swear about conditions like testicular cancer tend to bond more closely with other men using the same vocabulary. The idea that swearing is a legitimate means of expressing a negative emotion is much more circumscribed for women.

Building A Repertoire Of Curse Words

  • 1Draw up a list of curse words. Divide the list into 3 parts. Begin your list with the most powerful swears. Finish with the most benign. Although swearing is a spontaneous act, a “database” of swear words will better prepare you to swear.
  • Base your list on taboo words that registered most deeply with you–they’ll be the ones for which you have the most conviction.
  • Chances are you’ve heard plenty of curse words in your lifetime. About 0.7% of the words used daily by a person are swears.XResearch source
  • 2Begin your list of taboo words with the most powerful swears. Finish with the most benign. The word you found most potent? Put that on your A list. Benign? Put it on your C list.
  • Suggestions for your A-List are the curse words you’ll seldom use. They’re more taboo than the others. They have the potential to be more offensive, also. So be careful how you use them.
  • Middle-of-the-road curse words are suitable for your B List. They’re less abrasive and harsh than the âtop-of-the-lineâ curses.
  • Use âgentlerâ curses for your C List. Include in this group words like “hell,” “damn,” and “crap.” A word like damn is fun to say and not overly offensive. It’s almost, but not quite, a non-swear. “Damn! It’s raining again.”
  • Practice saying the words on your list so that they won’t sound awkward or forced when the time comes.
  • Damn is a soft word and it hardly raises a feather.
  • Which Hand Gestures Are Offensive In France

Lets start with one were all familiar with: the middle finger. Yep, that one will register in France too, which may or may not have something to do with the fact that French people really love the F-word. French people say fuck almost as much as English speakers do, and it even appears uncensored in English-language TV shows and newspaper headlines in France. So while the offense will be understood if you throw up a middle finger, its probably not the most offensive thing you can do.

Next is the chin flick, which you might associate with Italy but is also common in France. Its a dismissive gesture thats meant to communicate that you dont care or you want the other person to get lost.

Need a slightly stronger version of this? Slap your bicep with your palm as you jerk the other forearm toward your face.

If youre visiting France and want to be prepared for some of the strange hand gestures you might encounter, heres a pretty good run-down. And if youd like to insult someone verbally, weve got you covered.

How To Swear In Sign Language

If you are looking for a tutorial on how to swear in British Sign Language you should stop reading now because, as much as I hate to disappoint, I hate that this is the only sign language that people seem to be interested in learning. The most common response to someone finding out that I am competent at Sign Language seems to be whats *insert expletive here* in Sign Language. I used to simply show them the middle finger and demonstrate how people use sign language to swear even if they arent deaf. However, I dont want people to ask me how to swear in sign language or to show me that they know the sign for bullsh*t as if it is some great accomplishment to be proud of. It really isntin fact Id argue that youd be hard pushed to find a teenage boy who doesnt know the sign for bullsh*t.

So, next time you see an article, or ask someone, about how to swear in sign language, stop yourself. Think. If you are doing it in order to learn how to communicate with Deaf people then go right ahead. But if you are learning it simply to show off to your mates at the pub, then think again. Sign Language isnt a party trick. Its a language that belongs to a culture, and to people, that even today are being marginalised, excluded and discriminated against.

Are There Swear Words In German

Is this really a question you even need to ask? To be clear, Germans swear a lot about as much as anyone else but the swears, at least according to one of our native German experts, are more straightforward and less creative than they are in some languages. Truthfully, German insults are pretty hilarious and creative, but maybe in a more ironic, deadpan way.

The other thing to note is that attitudes toward sex and nudity are pretty relaxed in Germany, so sexual curse words arent as common because they dont register as being especially taboo. Casual poop slang like kacke and scheiße are more common and considered relatively harmless.

Here are some other good ones:
