To print the flash cards: In Adobe Reader, go to File > Print and select 2-Sided Printing > Flip on Short Side. If your printer does not have 2-sided printing, you will need to print out all the pages and attach each set back-to-back before cutting.
Helps You To Become A Better Listener
Speaking in sign language requires you to fully focus and concentrate on the person speaking to you. Not only eye contacts is very important but you cant possibly sign words without physically looking at that word.
And its not just about the hand gestures, but its also to focus on their facial expressions and body movements that are as important in sign language as your hands are.
Because when speaking orally, it is easy to look elsewhere, use the phone while speaking, have your back towards them, etc.
And thats just not nice, is it?
How To Hold Your Hand When Signing
If you are interested in fingerspelling, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind. The first is that you should do this with your dominant hand, not switching from one to the other, and your hand should be positioned near your shoulder, with your elbow bent. Your hand should remain in place, with no bouncing occurring unless the letter is doubled, like the T in kitty or the R in ferry. Keeping good form while you are fingerspelling makes it easier for those watching to clearly understand what it is you are saying.
When working with the ASL alphabet, remember that your hand should always be facing ahead. Some charts that illustrate the letters will rotate the hand to display the position more clearly, but in practice, the palm, no matter what shape it is making, should always face towards the viewer The exceptions are the letters G and H, which are made with the palm facing sideways. Similarly, when signing the cardinal numbers, 1-5 should be shown with the palm facing out, but 6-9 are shown with the palm facing in.
To ensure that your fingerspelling remains legible, remember that you will need to ensure that your hand remains steady and that you do not move too fast. Clarity in forming the words is a good deal more important than speed, and that poorly formed letters will be quite difficult to read. Maintain a steady pace for maximum readability, and remember that a pause means that you are starting a new word.

Sign Language Alphabets From Different Countries

Just like sign language, the sign language alphabet varies from country to country and it can be really fun to see how they differ from each other.
The manual alphabet used in Australia is much different from the manual alphabet used in the United States. This means that if you use the ASL alphabet in Australia, they will think you are weird.
We are honestly completely fascinated by the manual alphabets from around the world. They vary greatly. The alphabet used in Australia, Britain, and New Zealand is the same and uses two hands instead of one. We highly recommend learning this alphabet simply for the fun factor.
Some alphabets even use handshapes that are quite difficult to make if you know American Sign Language.
We think learning these different manual alphabets is very useful. When you go to another country, just look for a deaf person, and you can spell out what you are looking for! Just kidding their alphabet is normally in their native language. So, to fingerspell in Japanese Sign Language, you will need to know Japanese.

Different Flavors Of Sign Language
It’s important to understand that sign language comes in multiple styles, much like unique dialects in a spoken language. What you sign with one person may be different than the way another person signs, and this can be confusing at times.
For instance, some people sign “true American Sign Language,” which is a language that has its own grammar and syntax. Others use signed exact English , a form that mimics the English language as closely as possible. Still others use a form of sign language that combines English with ASL, known as pidgin signed English .
Sign language is also used differently in education. Some schools may follow a philosophy known as total communication and use all means possible to communicate, not just sign language. Others believe in using sign language to teach children English, an approach known as bilingual-bicultural .

Dont Bounce Your Letters
Imagine youre sitting at a table having a discussion but youre not hearing that discussion. All you can focus on is the person nodding their head up and down with every syllable. After a while, you might start to get nauseous just from watching them!
This can happen very easily when fingerspelling with the sign language alphabet. When youre switching between letters, its really important to keep your whole arm steady so the person reading your signs doesnt have to make that bouncing motion with their eyes.
The Value Of Abc Stories
ABC stories are also called “A-to-Z stories.” They are both entertainment and an educational tool used to help develop sign language skills. They offer the opportunity to be expressive and use your imagination to create a unique story while practicing ASL.
Because it’s an expressive form of sign language, there is no real way to interpret it and write it down. An ABC story must be viewed and you need to understand ASL in order to follow along. This gives the viewer an opportunity to learn as they watch as well.
This form of ASL storytelling is very popular. Outside of ASL classes, you will find a variety of videos online and on DVD. Sometimes, you can even catch an ABC story at a deaf poetry event.

Free Sign Language Alphabet And Phonics Songs
.As important as the sign language alphabet is in learning sign language, I dont teach letter names. Im not alone. In Montessori education, we dont teach the names of the letters of the alphabet. Instead, we teach the letter sounds, and children somehow spontaneously pick up the letter names. Today, Im sharing songs that will be important for children wanting to learn sign language. So much can be done with the sign language alphabet . Even if you dont know many signs, you can spell with the sign language alphabet what you need to say.
While there are many songs teaching the sign language alphabet, Im only sharing ones here that use phonics alone or in addition to the alphabet letters. I dont mind that the letter names are used in the songs as long as the letter sounds are taught with them.
Im sharing some fun YouTube videos with sign language alphabet and phonics songs for a variety of ages. Most, but not all, of them use American Sign Language . You can adapt them for your own country if you dont use American Sign Language.

How Sign Language Works
For centuries, people who were hard of hearing or deaf have relied on communicating with others through visual cues. As deaf communities grew, people began to standardize signs, building a rich vocabulary and grammar that exists independently of any other language. A casual observer of a conversation conducted in sign language might describe it as graceful, dramatic, frantic, comic or angry without knowing what a single sign meant.
There are hundreds of sign languages. Wherever there are communities of deaf people, you’ll find them communicating with a unique vocabulary and grammar. Even within a single country, you can encounter regional variations and dialects — like any spoken language, you’re bound to find people in different regions who communicate the same concept in different ways.
It may seem strange to those who don’t speak sign language, but countries that share a common spoken language do not necessarily share a common sign language. AmericanSign Language and British Sign Language evolved independently of one another, so it would be very difficult, or even impossible, for an American deaf person to communicate with an English deaf person. However, many of the signs in ASL were adapted from French Sign Language . So a speaker of ASL in France could potentially communicate clearly with deaf people there, even though the spoken languages are completely different.
