American Sign Language , the sign language used by the deaf community throughout most of North America, has a rich vocabulary of terms, which include profanity. Within deaf culture, there is a distinction drawn between signs used to curse versus signs that are used to describe sexual acts. In usage, signs to describe detailed sexual behavior are highly taboo due to their graphic nature. As for the signs themselves, some signs do overlap, but they may also vary according to usage. For example, the sign for “shit” when used to curse is different from the sign for “shit” when used to describe the bodily function or the fecal matter.

Have Men Always Sworn More Than Women And If So Why

Definitely not! Historians of the English language describe how women were equally praised for their command of exceedingly expressive insults and swearing, right up to the point in 1673 when a book by Richard Allestree was published titled The Ladies Calling. Allestree says that women who swear are acting in a way that is biologically incompatible with being a woman and, as a result, will begin to take on masculine characteristics, like growing facial hair or becoming infertile. He wrote, There is no sound more odious to the ears of God than an oath in the mouth of a woman.

Today we are horribly still in the same place on men versus women swearing. Although women are still considered to swear less than men, we know from studies that they dont. They swear just as much as men. But attitudinal surveys show that both men and women tend to judge womens swearing much more harshly. And that judgement can have serious implications. For example, when women with breast cancer or arthritis swear as a result of their condition, theyre much more likely to lose friends, particularly female friends. Whereas men who swear about conditions like testicular cancer tend to bond more closely with other men using the same vocabulary. The idea that swearing is a legitimate means of expressing a negative emotion is much more circumscribed for women.

Graphic Explicitness And Detail In Sign Language Taboo

Sutton-Spence and Woll found that phonological parameters are involved in the perception of offensiveness in BSL. Sze etal. confirmed this observation for four Asian sign languages. Our study focuses on dysphemistic strategies and reframes previous findings in terms of modifications to degree of iconicity. We showed that a) iconic signs have a higher potential to offend than non-iconic ones and b) if two iconic signs based on the same metonymic anchor are available, the one with the higher degree of iconicity is more offensive. We reframed the idea of reducing the visual explicitness of a sign in terms of reducing the degree of iconicity as measured in the number of structural correspondences.

We also showed that detail of graphic information increases offensiveness. Adding embodiment can increase offense, as can the three methods of enhancement illustrated in Figures 1820. Affective non-manuals allow us to see the signers attitude, where a nasty attitude makes the sign nasty changes in movement allow us to see the force behind an utterance the use of two-hands allows us to see the message twice simultaneously.

Our examples for the various strategies in making a sign more offensive hold for sex-related and non-sex-related terms. We wonder, then, whether the strategies for sex-related euphemisms noted in other sign languages might not also hold for non-sex-related terms in those languages.

The example that most people will be familiar with in English-speaking countries is blasphemy. From what we know, most of the possible gains found in children seem to level off after age 3. Children 3 years and older who were taught sign language dont appear to have significantly greater abilities than children who didnt sign.

But it may still be valuable to sign with your youngster for several reasons.

Many parents who used sign language reported that their infants and toddlers were able to communicate so much to them during those critical years, including emotions.

As any parent of a toddler knows, its often difficult to know why your child is behaving the way they are. But with sign language, the child has another way of expressing themselves.

While this type of sign language may help your child communicate easier, more research is needed to discover if it can help advance language, literacy, or cognition.

Sign Language That African Americans Use Is Different From That Of Whites

Carolyn McCaskill remembers exactly when she discovered that she couldnt understand white people. It was 1968, she was 15 years old, and she and nine other deaf black students had just enrolled in an integrated school for the deaf in Talledega, Ala.

When the teacher got up to address the class, McCaskill was lost.

I was dumbfounded, McCaskill recalls through an interpreter. I was like, What in the world is going on?

The teachers quicksilver hand movements looked little like the sign language McCaskill had grown up using at home with her two deaf siblings and had practiced at the Alabama School for the Negro Deaf and Blind, just a few miles away. It wasnt a simple matter of people at the new school using unfamiliar vocabularly they made hand movements for everyday words that looked foreign to McCaskill and her fellow black students.

So, McCaskill says, I put my signs aside. She learned entirely new signs for such common nouns as shoe and school. She began to communicate words such as why and dont know with one hand instead of two as she and her black friends had always done. She copied the white students who lowered their hands to make the signs for what for and know closer to their chins than to their foreheads. And she imitated the way white students mouthed words at the same time as they made manual signs for them.

Whenever she went home, McCaskill carefully switched back to her old way of communicating.

I didn’t know how much I didn’t know about sign language.

When we were teenagers, my friends and I pretended we knew sign language after we had studied those little cards, about 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches, that showed the alphabet in sign language. It would take forever for me to sign to a friend, “Frank is so cute. I wish he knew I was alive.”

We soon gave up on it.

American Sign Language, the main language that deaf people use in North America, uses far more than those 26 letters on the card. Signers use both hands, facial expressions and body posture. Nodding your head, tilting your head, shaking your head or raising your shoulder all send messages to the person watching you. The movements are similar to adjectives and verb modifiers in spoken language.

For example, moving the eyebrows indicates a question will be asked. Eyebrows up means the question can be answered with a yes or no. Eyebrows lowered means the question is a how or a why query needing a longer answer.

A couple of years back, a fake interpreter somehow was hired to sign portions of the funeral for South African statesman Nelson Mandela. The signs were closer to a baseball pitcher’s back-and-forth with his coach than to any recognizable language system. Deaf people noticed immediately that, in addition to signing gibberish, he was using no facial expressions.

Word order is different from spoken English, too, and varies depending on how well the audience knows the topic.

For example, when Donald Trump called Hillary Clinton a nasty woman rather than using the c-word, most of us were able to break the code. We knew what he meant but because he hadnt sworn it was seen as acceptable discourse.

In the future, I think that swearing will inevitably be reinvented weve seen it change so much over the years. As our taboos change, that core of language that has the ability to surprise, shock or stun the emotional side of the brain will change, too. But I cant predict where those taboos will go.

What The Research Says

The good news is that there are no real drawbacks to using signs with your young children. Many parents express concern that signing will delay the expression of verbal communication.

No studies have ever found that to be true, and there are some that suggest the exact opposite effect.

There are studies that suggest the use of sign language doesnt help infants and toddlers acquire verbal language earlier than usual, but even these studies dont show that signing delays the ability to talk.
