In what follows, we will take for granted the conclusions of recent linguistic research on the role of sign languages in studies of Universal Grammar, i.e. of the shared properties and parameters of variation found in the phonology, morphology and especially syntax of human languages. Universal Semantics can be similarly defined as the comparative study of interpretive processes in language, with the goal of determining which interpretive properties are universal and which are open to variation .
