- Utilize real-life situations: Real-life exchanges with other people who know sign language will help you learn more quickly! Join social groups to help you practice.
- Youll need qualifications to be professional: If you want to be an interpreter, youll need further qualifications. Talk to your professors or community deaf groups for more information.
- Practice your fingerspelling! Fingerspelling is quite simple, and an easy way to communicate with deaf people without memorizing all the word phrases. Even a little bit of sign language will be beneficial when communicating with deaf people!

Join A Sign Language Group Deaf Club Or Visit A Deaf Caf
Many cities have deaf clubs or groups of deaf people who meet regularly and quite often use sign language as their form of communication. Its a fantastic place to meet new people, who share hearing loss in common as well as the chance to polish your sign language skills. You can contact a Deaf charity or organization nearby, or search for a group using websites such as Meetup.com to find a group for you.

When it debuted in 2011, Switched at Birth garnered a lot praise for having multiple deaf and hard-of-hearing regular characters, as well as for scenes shot entirely in American Sign Language . Now the show is kicking it up a notch in season 2, announcing an episode told entirely in ASL, which they say is a first for a scripted series on mainstream television. It will air on Monday, March 4 at 8:00PM ET/PT.
It will be from the perspective of the series deaf characters with open captions for hearing viewers. The storyline will put the audience in the middle of a student uprising in which the very essence of their deaf identity is at stake. Now that Bay has joined the Carlton school for the deafs pilot program for hearing kids with deaf siblings or parents, we can get a sense of how things could get heated.
Ive been wanting to do an all-ASL episode since the series began, and the storyline weve been focusing on this season gave us the perfect opportunity. Its an exciting, visual, empowering story of kids who are different fighting back, and it allows our audience to experience the world as our deaf characters do. Weve been building to this for 39 episodes and were all thrilled to be the first to try this, said series creator and Executive Producer Lizzy Weiss. Season 2 just started on Jan. 7.

Hire A Private Qualified Sign Language Tutor
If you want to learn sign language quickly, a private tutor could be the best way. Research local, qualified sign language tutors in your area who are willing to offer private tuition. Courses could be done in one-to-one sessions, or in small groups of your choice. You may find a private tutor more of a benefit if you find a large class environment is too difficult to learn in.
Take A Sign Language Class
If youre ever considering learning sign language, this is one of the best ways to do it! Often community centers, community colleges or other educational centers offer day or evening classes. Qualified sign language tutors can help you work toward sign language qualifications. Classes are also a great way to meet new people and see the signs face-to-face.

Being in a class gives the opportunity to practice signing with different people. It is considered a good investment if the qualification leads to a job!

Tales Of A Teenage Heart
Ive been obsessing over this show on ABC Family called Switched at Birth. Its about two teenagers who were accidentally switched at birth in the hospital after they were born, and how it affected their lives sixteen years later. One girl on the show is deaf. And ever since I started watching this show, I became really interested in the American Sign Language.
I was always fascinated by sign language, the deaf community and their amazing culture. Ive always wanted to learn. I learned the alphabet when I was in elementary school from this poster that was posted in the classroom. Nobody really paid attention to that poster and it was probably posted to cover that last square of open space on the wall. However, after I learned the alphabet, I slowly forgot it):

The National Association of the Deaf is excited to share the remarkable news of an all American Sign Language episode to happen on Monday, March 4th on mainstream television! On a fictional TV series, ABC Familys Switched At Birth, deaf students fear their deaf school will be shut down. Take An Online Course
Online courses can be an alternative to day or evening classes that you take in-person. Some Deaf organizations and universities provide these, so do some research to find the best course for you. For example, Gallaudet University has a free online course to learn ASL.
Online courses are more flexible because they can be done in your own time, or in the comfort of your own home. You can practice as much as you need, and there is often no pressure to complete it.

LOS ANGELES “Until hearing people walk a day in our shoes, they will never understand,” says a guidance counselor at a high school for deaf students in “Switched at Birth.”
Such insights are a staple of the ABC Family drama, a TV rarity that puts deaf characters, played by deaf or hard-of-hearing actors, at the center of the action.
But Monday’s episode takes it a bold step further: Save for a few spoken words at the beginning and the end, it is silent. The actors’ hands do the talking with American Sign Language, even rapping together in one gleeful sequence.
Subtitles, which are typically sprinkled throughout “Switched at Birth” episodes, keep the viewer clued in. But when a deaf character is confused because she can’t hear something vital, the audience is too. It’s powerfully disconcerting.
The cast, including Oscar-winner Marlee Matlin as the school counselor, are excited about what they see as a grand experiment and eager for viewer reaction.
“It’s a risk,” added Leclerc, who has an inner ear disorder, Meniere’s disease, that can cause hearing loss and vertigo.
“I don’t know if we’ll ever get there, but never say never,” Matlin said.
In Praise Of Switched At Birth
I like teen shows. I like shows about women and girls. I like shows about people who like each other and treat each other decently. I like family-set shows that arent about misery. I like Switched at Birth. I like it a lot. I like it so much, Im pretty sure its teaching me American Sign Language.
I like other kinds of shows, too, but theres a part of my soul that craves stories about mostly happy families. Switched, on ABC Family, is about two high-school girls who discover that they were, yep, switched at birth: Basketball-playing, overachieving Daphne Vasquez , who has been raised by a Latina single mom Regina , is actually the biological daughter of wealthy, white John and Kathryn Kennish , while they have raised artsy outsider Bay , Reginas offspring. And yet the revelation that no ones quite who they thought they were doesnt send everything into a horrible hate-spiral. Instead, everyone parents, kids, a sibling, a grandma decides to make a go of things, to sort of smush their families together and get to know each other. Daphnes been deaf since age 3 she speaks and reads lips, and she and Regina sign. So the Kennishes start learning ASL, too, with varying success. Everyone learns a lot! About love and family and deaf culture and each other!

What was your motivation for creating the show?
Im a writer so Im always looking for great stories and when I heard about two middle-aged women who discovered that they had been switched at birth, I knew that making them teenagers would make a really interesting examination of nature vs. nurture. The decision to make one of the girls deaf came later, so it wasnt the primary inspiration for the show it was more of an extra complication to the main hook.
Did you have ties to the Deaf community prior to creating the show?
I took a class in college called Theater of the Deaf in which we had to perform monologues, songs, and poems in sign language. When I decided to make one of the girls different in some way to create more conflict with her birth family, I instantly knew that I wanted her to be deaf.
What sort of background research did you do in creating the show?
I saw documentaries on deaf history and the cochlear implant debate I read memoirs and lurked on deaf blogs and forums and most importantly, I visited Marlton School for the Deaf in Los Angeles and interviewed multiple classes of students about their lives.
Katie Leclerc Talks Switched At Birth
I kinda feel like were breaking new ground here. Lizzie Weiss, the creator, she did her research really, really well. I feel like the portrayal of the deaf community is done with tact and respect and class. Its really great to see that so not just to be the first to try this, but to be doing it right, I think is really coolI think people are afraid of what they dont know and I think thats a natural response. Having a TV show where multiple deaf characters come into your living room every week is going to be an incredible asset not only to the deaf community, but also the hearing community. Sign language is the third most used language in the United States but the deaf world and hearing world are so separate. I really dont think it has to be that way. I hope our show can be the catalyst to help form a bridge between those worlds. Build some tolerance.

Ask Your Deaf Friends And Family Teach You
Asking a Deaf friend to teach you some sign language is a great way of making new Deaf friends! If you know friends or family use sign language already, asking them to teach you some signs will also remove some stresses from the struggle of oral/spoken conversation with them making the exchange beneficial for both of you.
Just make sure your friend or family member uses sign language before asking them, as not all people who have hearing loss know sign language.

Why did Regina stop using sign language on Switched at Birth?Joey Edgerton, Omaha, Neb.
It was a case of life influencing art. Constance Marie, 47, who plays Regina, was diagnosed with double tendonitis, carpel tunnel and cubital nerve damage from learning ASL as an adult and having to perform it repetitively for long periods of time.
Nobody had done an episodic series where they had to learn sign language and new dialogue every week for 30 episodes, so the first season pretty much killed me, the former star of the George Lopez show says. The cubital nerve was triggered because deaf people use these two fingers way more than we do. Hearing people only use the first three fingers, so sad to say, four-and-a-half hours of signing every day just kind of killed me.
The injury has greatly affected the interaction between mother and daughter in the series because, for now, Regina is no longer to communicate with her deaf daughter Daphne in what is essentially her native tongueand it is very frustrating for Daphne to have to try to read her lips all the time.
Whether or not Regina will be able to sign again will depend on Maries ability to heal. Tendonitis is very slow healing, the East Los Angeles-born actress says, so I am going to be out of commission for a while. My doctor doesnt know how long because with tendonitis and carpel tunnel, brushing your hair triggers it, holding your daughters hand triggers itand I have a 4-year-old.
