Can Be Delivered Faster
At times the message can be delivered faster.
So imagine you are in one side of room and you want to communicate with the person on the other side of the room to say, come here! You do the hand gesture to come here, and that person hopefully will come over.
This is a lot quicker than going from where you are, through the people, to the other side of the room, and you want to say to the person, Can you come over there?, Okay, lets go back to the other side of the room, and then you get the message across.
Or can just say come here with your hands from across the room instead.
No Person Or Committee Invented Sign Language
No one knows for sure when the first Deaf person tried out visual gestures to express themselves. Many sources agree that using hand gestures and body language is one of the oldest and most basic forms of human communication, and it has been around just as long as spoken language.
The first written document of sign language is said to have come from Plato from Ancient Greece. In his Cratylus, he recorded Socrates saying:
If we had neither voice nor tongue, and yet wished to manifest things to one another, should we not, like those which are at present mute, endeavour to signify our meaning by our hands, head, and other parts of the body?
Native Americans also used sign language to communicate with other ethnic groups who spoke different languages. Even long after the European conquest, this system was in use. Another example is the case of a rare ethnic group that carried genes for deafness. Their island was isolated, so the trait spread among the locals at speed and a great population of Deaf people was formed. A local deaf culture developed and sign language arose so that the deaf could communicate with each other.
In theHidayah, a 12th century Islamic legal commentary, there was a reference to visual signals used by Deaf people for communication. Deaf people were acknowledged to have legal standing in areas likebequests, marriage, divorce, and financial transactions if they could communicate with understandable signs.
Sign Language Is A Part Of All Of Our Communication
The use of sign language is not, as you might think, restricted to people who have hearing disabilities. Even for hearing enabled people, sign language is a natural extension, or type of non-verbal communication.
For example, the hitchhiker putting out his thumb is using sign language. When you hold up your hand in a stop motion, that’s sign language. Sign language is a replacement for words. It’s worth noting that sign language use is exceedingly culture bound. A symbol or sign that is seen as polite in one culture may be perceived as extremely rude in another culture.

Can Be More Effective Than Verbal Messages
It can be more effective than verbal messages.
So for example, you might be in a crowded room and your eyes lock with another person, and you want to approach that person, maybe you want to flirt to that person, maybe a playful wink, its more effective than a cheesy pickup line like, Oh, Heaven is missing an angel, because its right here in front of me.
Teaching Country’s Sign Languages In Schools
Due to much exposure to sign language-interpreted announcements on national television, more schools and universities are expressing interest in incorporating sign language. In the US, enrolment for ASL classes as part of students’ choice of second language is on the rise. In New Zealand, one year after the passing of NZSL Act 2006 in parliament, a NZSL curriculum was released for schools to take NZSL as an optional subject. The curriculum and teaching materials were designed to target intermediate schools from Years 7 to 10, .

Intelligence And Lack Of Speech
Anyone who receives an IQ score of 70 or less on specific tests is labeled Intellectually Disabled . Until relatively recently, it was assumed that all nonverbal children with autism were intellectually disabled for the simple reason that their IQ scores fell under 70.
It’s recently become clear that typical IQ tests are very poor tools for measuring intellectual ability in children with autismparticularly when those children are nonverbal. The reasons are fairly obvious for example:
- IQ tests, for the most part, depend upon the test taker’s ability to quickly understand and respond to verbal information. Nonverbal children with autism obviously have challenges in those areas that may or may not have any connection to basic intelligence.
- Most IQ tests require an ability to understand and respond to social norms and expectations, and to respond within a specific period of time. These expectations are very challenging to kids with autism, whether verbal or not.
- Sensory issues that don’t cause issues for typical children may distract children with autism. Nonverbal children with autism don’t have the ability to let testers know about such issues.
- Testers are rarely trained to work with, engage with, or “read” children with special needs, especially children who are nonverbal. If they can’t engage the child, it is very unlikely that the child will present their highest level of ability.
What Is American Sign Language
American Sign Language is a complete, natural language that has the same linguistic properties as spoken languages, with grammar that differs from English. ASL is expressed by movements of the hands and face. It is the primary language of many North Americans who are deaf and hard of hearing, and is used by many hearing people as well.

Easy Ways To Support Non Verbal Communication With Toddlers

Signing With Special Needs Children
Additionally, current research states that using alternative communication means such as sign language does not impede kids with speech delays from talking. On the contrary, it may support their ability to speak. Due to very complex challenges in visual, auditory, spatial, and tactile sensory systems, children with relating and communicative disorders often experience difficulties in comprehending a broad range of meanings for the concepts and relations expressed through words.
The use of sign language supports language comprehension or understanding by providing children with more information about the meanings of words, events, concepts, and relations. Signs provide a visual cue to language for those that require additional support.

The Role Of Expectation In Nonverbal Communication
Can you really be sure that you correctly match what you observe on the outside with whats happening on the inside of that person regardless of which type of nonverbal communication were talking about?
Remember that youre likely to have an expectation. You may be hoping for a particular sign, such as an indication of interest or love. You may be vigilant and watch out for potential signs of danger, e.g. if you live in an environment where there is a threat of violence.
Having an expectation may:
- sharpen your awareness and protect you
- cause you to filter out other signs
- be observed in your body language
- be picked up by the other person
- be misinterpreted
Rather than to take a risk by taking a shortcut, its far better to take the time to really get to know someone and/or look for other signs to confirm your expectations.
Are Signs Verbal Communication
According to Robert M. Krauss, professor of psychology at Columbia University, signs and symbols are the major signals that make up verbal communication. Words act as symbols, and signs are secondary products of the underlying message and include things like tone of voice, blushing and facial expressions.

Sign Language Is A Natural And Visual Form Of Language That Uses Movements And Expression To Convey Meaning Between People
Sign language is a non-verbal language that Deaf persons exclusively count on to connect with their social environment. It is based on visual cues through the hands, eyes, face, mouth, and body. The gestures or symbols in sign language are organised in a linguistic way. It is a rich combination of finger-spelling, hand gestures, body language, facial expressions, timing, touch, and anything else that communicates thoughts or ideas without the use of speech.
Deaf people are the main users of sign language. Some hard of hearing people use it as a handy means of communication too. It is also used by those hearing individuals who cant use speech, be it due to a disability or condition, or by those who have Deaf family members, and used even sometimes by monks who have taken a vow of silence.
Indirect Nonverbal Ways Of Communicating
This is where an understanding of psychology is helpful. As a counsellor, for instance, I get a lot of information from the following ways people communicate non-verbally. Together with whats being verbalised, it helps to build a fuller picture of whats actually going on:
There are lots of other things that give out information about yourself, including
- The kind of books you read
- The way you dress
- The magazines you subscribe to
- The websites you visit
- The organisations you belong to.
Your possessions or things youd like to own also communicate without you uttering a word. Things like your house, your car, your gadgets, your furniture generally, your taste in pretty much everything!

What Is Nonverbal Autism
Despite the prevalence of autistic people who don’t speak, the term “nonverbal autism” has no official status, and there is no such diagnosis as “nonverbal autism.” In part, that’s because there is no clear line between verbal and nonverbal individuals with autism.
For example, some people with nonverbal autism do develop the ability to use a few words in a meaningful manner but are unable to carry on any kind of significant conversation. For example, they may say “car” to mean “let’s go for a ride,” but would not be able to answer the question “where should we go?”
Some have the ability to speak but lack the ability to use language in a meaningful way. They may “echo” scripts from television or expressions they’ve been taught by therapists. Instead of using these scripts to communicate ideas or desires, however, they seem to use “scripting” as a form of self-calming stimulation.
Quite a few nonverbal individuals can’t use spoken language effectively but are able to communicate with written or typed language, American sign language, picture cards, or digital communication devices. Once an individual is effectively communicating, even without spoken language, their ability to engage in the world expands dramatically.

Is Written Communication Verbal
The term verbal communication often evokes the idea of spoken communication, but written communication is also part of verbal communication. Both verbal and nonverbal communication can be spoken and written. Many people mistakenly assume that verbal communication refers only to spoken communication.

There is constant movement in your body. It changes from moment to moment with the meaning of what youre thinking and what youre trying to say out loud in company.
The body is seldom static. Really learning to pick up on all the nuances and all types of non-verbal communication takes practice and time.
Over time youll find yourself noticing more and more detail as you progress from any stage of being consciously incompetent to unconsciously competent.

Use Of Sign Languages In Hearing Communities
On occasion, where the prevalence of deaf people is high enough, a deaf sign language has been taken up by an entire local community, forming what is sometimes called a “village sign language” or “shared signing community”. Typically this happens in small, tightly integrated communities with a closed gene pool. Famous examples include:
In such communities deaf people are generally well-integrated in the general community and not socially disadvantaged, so much so that it is difficult to speak of a separate “Deaf” community.
Many Australian Aboriginal sign languages arose in a context of extensive speech taboos, such as during mourning and initiation rites. They are or were especially highly developed among the Warlpiri, Warumungu, Dieri, Kaytetye, Arrernte, and Warlmanpa, and are based on their respective spoken languages.
Sign language is also used by some people as a form of alternative or augmentative communication by people who can hear but cannot use their voices to speak.
Some sign languages have obtained some form of legal recognition, while others have no status at all. Sarah Batterbury has argued that sign languages should be recognized and supported not merely as an accommodation for the disabled, but as the communication medium of language communities.
Coda: Children Of Deaf Adults
I have been wondering where Sign Language fits in the categories of Verbal and Non-Verbal communication. I have been poking around in some literature and it seems that the popular consensus is Sign Language is entirely in the Non-Verbal category. This does seem logical because when signing you do not speak the message verbally.
Lets define Verbal and Non-Verbal communication. Verbal communication is the words that are being said. Non-Verbal communication is everything from facial expression and gestures, voice inflections and tone, body movement and posture, the medium of communication , and anything else that may add to the final message of the listener or receiver of the message. It seems that facial expressions and gestures plus body movement and posture encapsulate sign language, right?
We can not simply switch body and facial movements and changes to the Verbal side because that creates a problem. In an ASL conversation there are still the classic, non-ASL, Non-Verbals.

The Danger Of Interpreting Nonverbal Communication
Body language, in particular, can potentially provide additional information about thoughts and feelings. It may reveal a discrepancy between whats being said and whats really going on inside. For instance: someone may say yes, whilst shaking their head.
Feelings may not be expressed verbally, but they can leak out and morph into body movements often without the individual being at all aware.
Use what you observe as a signpost and make a mental note. You may want to return to what was discussed sometime later. Do it gently though you wouldnt want to bulldoze through the other persons defences.
Its wise to avoid making assumptions you could be so wrong! Our brain makes thousands of minuscule observations that never reach our conscious awareness. Can you really be sure that the nonverbal signs you consciously observe are not connected with something else altogether?
Ask yourself what another train of thought, feeling or impulse may have sparked that nonverbal signal? Are you sure that youre not looking for what you would really expect or want to see?
