How Is Ear Candling Done
Ear candles are hollow tubes that are approximately 10 inches long. They are made of cotton or linen that has been wound tightly into a cone shape, soaked in beeswax, paraffin, or soy wax, and allowed to harden.
During an ear candling session, you lie down on one side with the ear to be treated facing up. The pointed end of the ear candle is usually inserted into a hole in a paper or foil plate and then into the external ear canal.
The candle is lit at the opposite end and held as the practitioner trims away the burnt material while the candle is burning.
After several minutes , the treatment ends and the ear candle stub is removed and extinguished. The outer ear is wiped clean with a cotton ball or pad.
How Do Doctors Remove Earwax
There are several treatment options for removing impacted earwax.
Although some of the treatments are doable at home, the American Academy of Otolaryngology recommend that a person talks with their doctor about the best treatments before trying any home remedies themselves.

One method Ying uses involves a suspended surgical microscope, which lets her see deep inside the ear canal as she works; she dilates the ear canal with a speculum, then uses suction to dislodge the wax.

How To Keep Earwax Under Control
Give your ears a gentle cleansing each day. The best approach: After washing your face or stepping out of a steamy shower, cover one finger with a damp washcloth and wipe around your outer ear. De-clogging the most external exit will help with that natural migration, Ying says.
People who tend to produce an abundance of earwax may try using a softening agent, to help the wax leave the ear or to remove it more easily. If you prefer to go the natural route, try baby oil or mineral oil. Using an eyedropper, apply a drop or two into your ear, tilting your head so that the opening of the ear is pointing up toward the ceiling. Stay in that position for a minute or two to let the fluid flow down to the waxy buildup. Then tilt your head in the opposite direction to let the fluid and wax drain.
Or try an over-the-counter product to loosen small amounts of wax. These solutions may contain oil or hydrogen peroxide. Some include a bulb syringe that you squeeze to flush your ear with warm water, if needed. Irrigation, however, isn’t always appropriate, particularly if you have a damaged eardrum or a middle ear infection. You’re doing it blind, says Ying. You go, Let me go in a little bit deeper, but you have no way to gauge that. What’s more, if you get it into the ear canal and it doesn’t come out, it can create a moist environment, and that can lead to an outer ear infection.”

Alternatives To Ear Wax Removal
There are a number of over-the-counter options for cleaning the ear. None are recommended by LACENTA.;
Q tips can dry up the natural lubricant of the ear. A Q-tip is okay for cleaning the outside of the ear, but once a q-tip enters into the ear canal you can potentially create a problem, such as a perforated eardrum which can sometimes be difficult to fix. And even when it is fixable, eardrum repair is a significant surgery that carries with it risks and potential complications.;
Hydrogen Peroxide is not recommended as it needs to be properly diluted to be safe for the ear. If the solution is too strong it can damage the ear. There are over-the-counter products that can be purchased to soften the wax so it will be easier for the natural process of the ear to remove it.
Rubber Bulb Syringe using warm water is another common method. shooting water into the ear, if done too forcefully can damage your eardrum.
Ear candles should be avoided. There is no evidence that ear candles assist ear wax removal in any way and improperly performed can, in fact, lead to blockage of other complications such as ruptured eardrums or bleeding, according to the FDA.
Drops used to soften the wax are not always effective and often will not resolve an impacted blockage.;
Is There Any Way To Prevent Ear Wax Buildup
The best way to avoid problems with ear wax is to leave your ears alone. People who clean their ears with Q-tips or use home irrigations tend to have more significant ear wax problems. How Is Earwax Buildup And Blockage Treated
Earwax can be removed in several ways. Some of these methods can be done at home.
You can clean the outside of the ear by wiping with a cloth. Dont wad up the cloth and push it into the ear canal.
You can use cerumenolytic solutions into the ear canal. These solutions include:
- Mineral oil.
- Hydrogen peroxide or peroxide-based ear drops .
- Saline solution.
With these solutions, you put a few drops into the affected ear with a dropper and lie on the opposite side so that the solution can drip into your affected ear. You can also soak a cotton ball and put it over the affected ear and let the solution drip into the ear.
Another option is irrigating or syringing the ear. This involves using a syringe to rinse out the ear canal with water or saline solution. Generally, this is done after the wax has been softened or dissolved by a cerumenolytic.
Finally, your healthcare provider can remove the wax manually using special instruments. The provider might use a cerumen spoon, forceps, or suction device.
Note: Your ears _should not _be irrigated if you have, or think you have, a perforation in your eardrum or if you have tubes in the affected ear.
How not to clean your ears
Dont use suction devices for home use . They arent effective for most people and arent recommended.
Ear candles, which are advertised as a natural method to remove earwax, are ineffective. They can also cause injuries such as burns to the external ear and ear canal and perforation of the eardrum.
