When Fingerspelling How Do You Separate Words
Same way you do with spoken language. Pause.
NAME J-O-E, J-E-F-F-ER-I-E-S
Or sign last before spelling your last name.
NAME J-O-E, LAST, J-E-F-F-ER-I-E-S
Same way you do with spoken language. Pause.
We do not pause between words in spoken languages. You think we do because you speak the language and know where the word boundaries are. But if you look at the actual sound waves, you would see no ‘breaks’ between words.
But in fingerspelling, yes, those options are what I do:
pause briefly, often with a slight shift in the direction of the dominant/finger-spelling hand
sign an indication word before each fingerspelled word
Pauses or hand position shift is the best. Whatever you think will best denote separation in the conversation.
I tend to move hand position. If it’s two words, I’ll do “R O B E R T” “S M I T H”. If three, same, just put the middle word in the middls position. If you’re fingerspelling more than 3 words, uhhh… use your own judgement? 🙂
I normally pause and shift my hand slightly farther to the right.
I usually pause, but sometimes to emphasise a space between words, I swipe my entire hand on the side. Like Im flipping to another screen on an iPad, I use my open palm to swipe to the right.
Simply pause between the words. Don’t make it a long pause, though. Simply holding the last letter for a brief second is enough of a pause.

Hearing Sign Language Users
While many deaf people need sign language, so do others who are not deaf. In fact, there has been a discussion in the deaf and hard of hearing community about substituting the term “signing community” for the term “deaf community” for this very reason.
Non-deaf users of sign language include hearing babies, nonverbal people who can hear but cannot talk, and even gorillas or chimpanzees. Each of these instances points to the importance of continuing the language so that communication is more inclusive.

Let me explain some of the letters of this alphabet:
You will notice two black arrows in this imageone for the letter J and one for the letter Z. For the letter J, you will make the handshape for the letter I, then trace a J in the air . For the letter Z, you will make a number 1 handshape and trace the letter Z into the air .
For the letters that are hard to see:
C has a handshape that forms the letter C with your hand. I dont like to turn my Cs so that the side of my hand is facing the person I am talking to when I sign them. That can be hard on the wrist after a while.
The letter F can be signed with the three fingers apart or together. I prefer apart because its not too forceful on your hands.
Letters M, N, and T are very similar. For M your thumb is under your first three fingers, for N your thumb is under your first two fingers, and for T your thumb is under only your first finger.
P has the same handshape as the letter K, just with your middle finger pointing to the floor.
Q has a similar handshape to the letter G but with your thumb and pointer finger pointing to the floor.
Key Fingerspelling Tips To Remember:
When fingerspelling a complex, unusual, or weird word its important to go the extra mile to make sure its clear. That may mean using a different method to sign its double letters, or combing methods. For instance, Tap+arch or Tap+slide
Direction of your movement is away from your body. Right handed go to the right, left handed go to the left.
If you slide your hand for your double letter, do not move it back to the starting position. Keep it right where it is after the slide.
If you’re fingerspelling a string of words, you can move it back for the word after the double letter, but make it a small movement.
In reality, as you gain speed with your fingerspelling your slides and arches will get smaller and your movement back to the next word will be slight.

Basics Of Alphabets And Fingerspelling
Most people start their sign language journey by learning the A-Z or alphabet equivalent in sign form.
The use of the hands to represent individual letters of a written alphabet is called fingerspelling. Its an important tool that helps signers manually spell out names of people, places and things that dont have an established sign.
For example, most sign languages have a specific sign for the word tree, but may not have a specific sign for oak, so o-a-k would be finger spelled to convey that specific meaning.
Of course, not every language uses the Latin alphabet like English, so their sign language alphabet differs as well. Some manual alphabets are one-handed, such as in ASL and French Sign Language, and others use two-hands, like BSL or Auslan. Though there are similarities between some of the different manual alphabets, each sign language has its own style and modifications, and remains unique.
