Removing Ear Wax Blockage

Ear wax can block the hearing path and cause temporary hearing loss. You can get rid of that temporary hearing loss by removing the ear wax, and an audiologist can help you with that.

You can go through these measures in terms of both permanent and temporary hearing loss problems. An audiologist will help you to figure out which one to go for.

Factors For Those Who Chose Amplification

During the case history, does the patient report or deny hearing problems? Activity limitations? Social withdrawal?

Those who obtain hearing aids have a higher self-perceived difficulty prior to being fit than those who dont, and greater difficulties perceived by others , based on the Hearing Handicap Questionnaire . Whereas, those who chose no amplification accept their hearing loss, have less communication-related stress, and feel less emotionally handicapped by their hearing loss, based on the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly- Short form .

Johnson et al also showed that pre- and post-fitting measures are beneficial to demonstrate how the patient perceives their hearing difficulties and quality of life. They show that if a questionnaire is completed, it must be done prior to amplification. After the hearing aid fitting, results about the unaided condition are not as accurate.

How can we, as audiologists, measure these outcomes? Here are a few methods:

  • Pre- and post-questionnaires on the HHIE-S
  • Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults
  • Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit
  • Client-Oriented Scale of Improvement

Laplante-Lévesque also found that patients who have applied for financial assistance for amplification are more likely to actually obtain amplification than those who are not eligible.

Personal Sound Amplification Products

Do You Need Hearing Aids for Mild Hearing Loss?

PSAPs, also known as Personal Sound Amplification Devices, are wearable electronic devices or products that help to amplify sounds for people that are deaf or suffer hearing loss. The FDA does not classify PSAPs as hearing aids because they do not meet the manufacturing and safety standards for hearing aids. Despite the FDA’s stance on PSAPs, most people consider PSAPs to be an affordable alternative to hearing aids. Because they are not classified as medical devices, PSAPs can be bought over the counter or online for as cheap as fifty dollars. While PSAPs may not have the features and fittings to help people with hearing loss, the FDA considers them to be good alternative options for hearing soft sounds during lectures, presentations, or recreational activities such as hunting or bird watching. Unlike hearing aids, they do not need to be fitted by an audiologist, PSAPs can be self-fitted or self-programmed using smartphones or computers. PSAPs are not just restricted to volume amplification there are improved PSAPs that perform the basic functions of hearing aids. However, this does not mean that they can substitute hearing aids. PSAPs just fill the need for people with mild hearing loss who need sound amplification in certain situations. Using PSAPs as a substitute for hearing aids can do more harm than good to your hearing in the long run.

Do You Have Mild Hearing Loss Use Hearing Aids

Until recently, mild hearing loss was not treated. People considered it a minor problem. But times are changing. Today, the results of long-term clinical studies demonstrate that the use of hearing aids for mild hearing loss has a positive effect on human health. Daily use of these devices at the initial stage of hearing loss helps prevent further problems. The cognitive functions also stop deteriorating. Of course, a person also gets the opportunity to hear well even in conditions of interfering background noise.

Our hearing aids shop offers a wide range of devices in different types, styles, and designs. Our hearing care professional will select a device for you based on your individual needs and hearing tests.

Keeping ears healthy is an important task for every person. It is important not to forget about preventive measures, the best of which is regular hearing tests, especially for those at risk. Audiology Island also recommends strengthening the body, treating upper respiratory tract diseases on time. Avoid noise exposure, and if this is not possible, use protective equipment . If you notice the first signs of the impairment, consult an audiologist. Timely treatment will allow you to avoid many problems in the future!

Are Hearing Aids Necessary For Me

The hearing aids we fit are all digital and fitted to a prescription for each loss, however if the loss is very mild or over a very narrow range then they could be unsuitable for you and your Audiologist will discuss this with you.

Wearing a hearing aid is not like having your natural hearing restored. Hearing aids for age related loss mainly give back high frequency information. This means that initially the aid will sound sharp, tinny, and loud as well as making your own voice sound different. You would also initially notice high frequency sounds such as paper rustling and water running however with consistent use this will settle down and it will be worth persevering if your Audiologist has recommended aids for you.

If challenging listening situations such as restaurants or busy social gatherings are the only areas where you struggle to hear then a hearing aid is not likely to improve this. Even with new developments in technology hearing aids cannot get rid of all of the background noise which you dont want to hear. Sometimes they can make you more aware of it.

Hearing aids are just aids and do have limitations. This can mean at a table in a restaurant, if you are in a group, you still may not be able to hear the person you want to who is sat at the other end. Hearing aids do not know who you are trying to listen to and it can be difficult to focus on the speech you want to hear.

How Much Hearing Loss Requires A Hearing Aid

Posted

Any challenge to enjoying clear and defined sound input is a health and well being issue, and deserves to be addressed.

Modern medicine and engineering have combined to produce technology that can be adapted to a range of hearing problems. It means it can potentially help even those with mild to moderate issues. Hearing aids are for anyone who finds that they struggle to hear sounds at certain levels, or that their audio input is unclear.

Measurement of hearing loss

The unit of measurement for sound is Decibels and hearing is often defined by the volume level you can reach without a hearing aid.

Medical professionals tend to group hearing loss into four levels:

Mild this would mean you have difficulty hearing the quietest sounds around 25 to 39 dB. This would be particularly noticeable if there is a lot of background noise.

Moderate the level of sounds you would struggle to hear would be from 40 to 69 dB. This would make it a struggle to hear what people are saying to you.

Severe this means that your level of hearing is around 70 to 94 dB. This is very noticeable, and would require lip reading, as peoples voices are below that range.

Profound hearing loss that is extensive, and measured around 95 dB.

What does mild hearing loss actually mean?

The use of the word mild is sometimes a little misleading, as it implies that the condition is acceptable.

An aid to hear, not a sign of deafness

How Technology Helps (Mild Hearing Loss)

Theres no getting around the fact that quality hearing aids are expensive. Some insurance plans may cover a partial cost of the devices, but for most people, hearing aids are paid for out-of-pocket. Since mild hearing loss is usually much cheaper to correct than more severe cases due to the technology involved, your wallet benefits from acting early! Dont wait to purchase hearing aids your wallet will thank you!

Addressing hearing loss as soon as you notice it also benefits your work performance.

Think of all the important details in meetings youd miss if you cant hear well, and how that would impact your performance. Is the cost of hearing aids worth more than losing your job or missing a promotion? On the flipside, better hearing can boost performance, so you can work longer and more productively.Would you like to improve your hearing and your quality of life?

When Should Hearing Be Checked

Its best to catch hearing problems early, because treatment is more successful if it starts before a child is 6 months old. Thats why every newborn has a hearing screening test before leaving the hospital.

If your baby doesn’t have a screening before going home, or was born at home or a birthing center, get their hearing checked within the first 3 weeks of life. Not passing a hearing screening doesnt mean a baby has hearing loss, but it does mean that the baby should be retested within 3 months. If hearing loss is found then, treatment should begin right away.

Kids should continue to have their hearing checked at their regular checkups. Hearing screening tests usually are done at:

  • ages 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 years
  • the preteen years
  • the teen years

The doctor will also check hearing any other time there’s a concern. Tell your childs doctor if you are concerned about a hearing problem.

How Is Hearing Loss Defined

Hearing loss is the inability to hear sounds, either partially or totally and can occur in either ear or more commonly in both. It is generally a gradual process of deterioration but can be of sudden onset which must be treated immediately and preferably within the first 24 hours. Total or profound hearing loss is termed anacusis and is the total inability to perceive sound, though this word is rarely used medically.

Hearing category
Considered hearing loss Loss of 25 dB HL in one ear

A healthy ear can typically hear from 20Hz to 20KHz and this is called the dynamic range.

The speech range is from 500Hz to 6KHz though, for fidelity and timbre it is beneficial to hear beyond this and useful if the dynamic range is at least 10KHz.

If an individual can hear between 0-20 dB HL across the speech range, then hearing is considered normal. dB HL is the sound pressure level in decibels and absolute normal is 0 DBHL across the speech range. A person is considered to have a hearing loss if there is a diagnosed loss of 25 dB HL in one ear.

There are three categories of hearing loss, sensorineural, conductive and mixed:

Type of loss
Combination of both sensorineural and conductive loss.

How Does Mild Hearing Loss Affect Communication

People with mild hearing loss often say they hear well in quiet environments when talking one-on-one with someone however, not so well when they are in noisy environments, nor when a person is facing away or is standing some distance away from them, according to audiologist Dr. Melissa Danchak, AuD, of Kos/Danchak Audiology and Hearing Aids in Arlington, Texas.

People with mild hearing loss often report that they can hear but can’t understand conversations clearly.

What Is Considered Mild Hearing Loss

Technically speaking, mild hearing loss is difficulty hearing at a level of 26 to 40 decibels. If you experience mild hearing loss, you may have trouble hearing:

  • Whispering
  • Conversations amid background noise
  • Ambient noise, like refrigerators or water flowing in a stream

Itâs important to focus more on how hearing loss is affecting you than on classifications like âmild,â Catherine Palmer, PhD, professor and director of audiology and hearing aids at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, tells WebMD Connect to Care.

âIt is not a very useful term because an individual who is experiencing communication challenges who has hearing in this range does not consider this a âmildâ problem,â Palmer says. Hearing loss can interfere with work and school, cause loneliness and depression, and disrupt relationships. For children, even âmildâ hearing loss can cause developmental trouble and difficulty making friends.

Hearing Aids Help Children With Mild Hearing Loss

Hearing loss among children affects the development of their speech and language skills. The influence of hearing loss can even be seen among children with mild hearing loss. However, wearing hearing aids can help. A study from the U.S. shows the longer children with mild hearing loss wear a hearing aid, the better their speech and language skills develop.

Summary Of Main Results

Signs you might have mild hearing loss

For hearingspecific healthrelated quality of life where participation is the key domain , we found evidence that hearing aids had a large beneficial effect in reducing participation restrictions. Our confidence in the quality of the evidence for hearingspecific healthrelated quality of life was moderate due to high risk of bias . Significant differences in the size of effects were apparent across studies the effects reported by the two individual Veterans Association studies were similar , and more than twice the size of the effect reported by . However, all three studies individually reported large effects > 0.70) that favoured hearing aids, meaning that while further evidence may change the size of the overall effect on hearingspecific healthrelated quality of life, we have high confidence in the magnitude and direction of the effect.

For listening ability , there was a large beneficial effect of hearing aids when compared to the unaided/placebo condition. The two studies used different outcome measures with one, Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit , being an abbreviated version of the other . Both measures revealed large beneficial effects that favoured the use of hearing aids. Our confidence in the quality of the evidence for listening ability was moderate due to high risk of bias , although we have high confidence that the effect was both large and beneficial.

Agreements And Disagreements With Other Studies Or Reviews

This review is consistent with the conclusions of a previous systematic review on hearing aids . Both reviews conclude that hearing aids improve hearingspecific healthrelated quality of life compared to no hearing aids. However, whereas identified a lack of evidence for more general effects on healthrelated quality of life in people with hearing loss, in our review we showed a small beneficial effect. These reviews differ in a number of methodological details. The current review includes only randomised controlled trials, whereas included randomised and nonrandomised trials. used the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network grading system , and included two studies that met the highest level of evidence . We did not include the study as the randomisation took place after the participants had been allocated to either hearing aids or no hearing aids on the basis of whether they were eligible to receive hearing aids or not. Our review included the study, which had not been published at the time the review was conducted, and we included the study by . The other main differences between the reviews were that our review was able to include three generally welldesigned RCTs in the metaanalyses and used a predefined hierarchy of outcome measures for each outcome domain.
