Where Did Asl Originate
No person or committee invented ASL. The exact beginnings of ASL are not clear, but some suggest that it arose more than 200 years ago from the intermixing of local sign languages and French Sign Language . Todays ASL includes some elements of LSF plus the original local sign languages over time, these have melded and changed into a rich, complex, and mature language. Modern ASL and modern LSF are distinct languages. While they still contain some similar signs, they can no longer be understood by each others users.

How Sign Language Works
For centuries, people who were hard of hearing or deaf have relied on communicating with others through visual cues. As deaf communities grew, people began to standardize signs, building a rich vocabulary and grammar that exists independently of any other language. A casual observer of a conversation conducted in sign language might describe it as graceful, dramatic, frantic, comic or angry without knowing what a single sign meant.
There are hundreds of sign languages. Wherever there are communities of deaf people, youll find them communicating with a unique vocabulary and grammar. Even within a single country, you can encounter regional variations and dialects like any spoken language, youre bound to find people in different regions who communicate the same concept in different ways.
It may seem strange to those who dont speak sign language, but countries that share a common spoken language do not necessarily share a common sign language. AmericanSign Language and British Sign Language evolved independently of one another, so it would be very difficult, or even impossible, for an American deaf person to communicate with an English deaf person. However, many of the signs in ASL were adapted from French Sign Language . So a speaker of ASL in France could potentially communicate clearly with deaf people there, even though the spoken languages are completely different.

Types Of Sign Language
The first thing to understand is what type of sign language you want to learn. This will most likely be based on where you live, and what verbal language is spoken in your community. Hand signs can vary based on the type of sign language being used. For example, there is American Sign Language , British Sign Language and various others, based on different languages.
In general, sign language is grouped into three sections :
- Deaf sign languages: The preferred languages of Deaf communities around the world including village sign languages, shared with the hearing community, and Deaf-community sign languages
- Auxiliary sign languages: Sign systems used alongside oral, spoken languages.
- Signed modes of spoken languages, or manually coded languages: Used to bridge signed and spoken languages

The sign for I love you is a combination of the fingerspelled letter I, L and Y. Your thumb and index finger together form an L, while your little finger forms an I. Learn how to sign the phrase my name is. Its a useful expression to know when practicing good manners!
1. This is a two part sign. First you sign the word my simply by placing one flat hand on the middle of your chest.2. Now you will sign name. Pair kids off the first time they meet and encourage them to introduce themselves using the phrase, My name is. Add on to this activity by having each child tell one interesting thing about himself, such as, My name is ______ and I like to _______! Return to the circle and have the partners introduce their new friend.

Basics Of Alphabets And Fingerspelling
Most people start their sign language journey by learning the A-Z or alphabet equivalent in sign form.
The use of the hands to represent individual letters of a written alphabet is called fingerspelling. Its an important tool that helps signers manually spell out names of people, places and things that dont have an established sign.
For example, most sign languages have a specific sign for the word tree, but may not have a specific sign for oak, so o-a-k would be finger spelled to convey that specific meaning.
Of course, not every language uses the Latin alphabet like English, so their sign language alphabet differs as well. Some manual alphabets are one-handed, such as in ASL and French Sign Language, and others use two-hands, like BSL or Auslan. Though there are similarities between some of the different manual alphabets, each sign language has its own style and modifications, and remains unique.

Thank you is signed one-handed from the front of the chin. Be careful not to begin that sign under the chin before arcing outward or you change it to f*** you, which is considered offensive to most people.
Further, starting at your cheek, next to your chin, and moving outward is the sign for prostitute, or similar terms.
Finally, starting from your lips, rather than your chin before the outward arc, is blowing a kiss. A misplaced sign starting point can be the difference between a sign of gratitude and one of insult. Not A Universal Language
There is no single sign language used around the world. Like spoken language, sign languages developed naturally through different groups of people interacting with each other, so there are many varieties. There are somewhere between 138 and 300 different types of sign language used around the globe today.
Interestingly, most countries that share the same spoken language do not necessarily have the same sign language as each other. English for example, has three varieties: American Sign Language , British Sign Language and Australian Sign Language .

The earlier a child is exposed to and begins to acquire language, the better that childs language, cognitive, and social development will become. Research suggests that the first few years of life are the most crucial to a childs development of language skills, and even the early months of life can be important for establishing successful communication with caregivers. Thanks to screening programs in place at almost all hospitals in the United States and its territories, newborn babies are tested for hearing before they leave the hospital. If a baby has hearing loss, this screening gives parents an opportunity to learn about communication options. Parents can then start their childs language learning process during this important early stage of development.

When my uncle was younger, he toured the island making a small living by giving martial arts demonstrations, Wisnu translated as Kolok Getar continued his story in a whirl of karate-chop hand signs. He met many deaf people but could hardly communicate with them, because, if they knew sign language at all, it was a different version . Those deaf people were often lonely because they could only talk with one or two members of their close family.

Hearing people are known as enget, and no matter where you are in the village you will often come across mixed groups of kolok and enget all chatting in what they call deaf talk. Whether youre visiting the primary school, at the central temple or sipping sweet black kopi at Pak Supardas little warung , youre likely to see deaf and hearing people in animated but silent conversation, or jostling each other with boisterous laughter.
Kolok and enget are paid equal rates for work in the village, I Ketut Kanta told me. Nevertheless, it isnt easy for deaf people to find a job outside the village, and it is sometimes hard to get by here on local labour wages of about US$5 a day.

I also talk a little about how these question words are used. For example, Whats up? in sign language is often used as an informal greeting, just as it is in English. But its also used to ask for more information or for an explanation of a concept.
So you might see a sentence signed like this: That book, whats up? which means What is that book about? Or you might see this: Before happen, whats up? which means Tell me about what happened earlier. In English, Whats up is still considered slang, but its perfectly proper grammar in ASL!

Ask Your Deaf Friends And Family Teach You
Asking a Deaf friend to teach you some sign language is a great way of making new Deaf friends! If you know friends or family use sign language already, asking them to teach you some signs will also remove some stresses from the struggle of oral/spoken conversation with them making the exchange beneficial for both of you.
Just make sure your friend or family member uses sign language before asking them, as not all people who have hearing loss know sign language.
