Check the medicine cabinet. Try an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen, to ease an earache or pain from sinus pressure.

Try a . Over-the-counter tablets or nasal sprays can ease sinus blockage which in turn can relieve clogged ears. But don’t use nasal decongestant sprays for more than 3 days, or you will rebound⦠meaning the more you use it the more you need it because youâre congested.

Avoid extreme temperatures. They can make sinus-related ear problems worse. If your ears bother you, it isnât the time to go jogging on a hot day or build a snow fort with the kids.

Keep your head up. If you bend forward with your head down, it can make the pressure worse. Youâll want to skip yoga class until the sinus problem is over.

Blow your nose gently. Block one nostril while you blow through the other.

Drink plenty of fluids. Down lots of water in the evening. When you stay hydrated, it keeps nasal mucus thin. That helps it drain and means less nighttime stuffiness.

Removing Excessive Ear Wax

While an ear wax blockage is generally not considered a medical emergency, it best to have it removed by a doctor who has experience treating disorders of the ears .

According to the American Academy of OtolaryngologyHead and Neck Surgery, you should avoid using a cotton swab or sharp object to try to remove wax yourself. You may push the wax down further in the ear, creating or worsening an ear wax blockage, or you may accidentally puncture the eardrum.

There are a couple of different acceptable ways to remove ear wax. One is by water irrigation. The doctor may use a syringe full of lukewarm water to flush the wax out of the ear. This should only be slightly uncomfortable.

Sometimes letting a little bit of water sit in the ear prior to irrigating will loosen the wax. Some people have complained of feeling dizzy or nauseous during the procedure. This method isn’t always effective, and there is a chance that you can introduce bacteria into the ear in the process.

Some doctors may use a water jet device such as a WaterPik for irrigation, but this is not the best method due to the discomfort it can cause and the possibility of damaging the ear it introduces. Water irrigation should never be done if you have or suspect you have a ruptured eardrum, due to the risk of infection.

Does Earwax Need To Be Removed

Usually, there’s no need to remove earwax because it comes out by itself. Sticking anything into a child’s ears raises the risk of infection or damage to the ear canal or eardrum. Cotton swabs are handy for a variety of grooming needs, but should not be used to remove earwax. In most cases, regular bathing is enough to keep it at healthy levels.

While some people have more earwax than others, in general the ear makes as much wax as it needs. Rarely, kids’ ears do make too much earwax. And sometimes earwax can build up and block the ear canal, especially when pushed in by a finger, cotton swab, or other object. This is called “impaction.” If it affects hearing or causes pain or discomfort, a doctor can remove it.

Parents and kids shouldn’t attempt to remove earwax at home, even with remedies that promise to be safe and effective. Doing so risks damage to the ear canal and, possibly, a child’s hearing.

Patients can try placing a few drops of mineral oil, baby oil, glycerin, or commercial earwax removal drops in the ear. Detergent drops such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide may also aid in the removal of wax. Patients should know that rinsing the ear canal with hydrogen peroxide results in oxygen bubbling off and water being left behind-wet, warm ear canals make good incubators for growth of bacteria.
