How Is Ear Wax Build

Ear Bites: Ear Wax – How to remove it using Olive Oil

Ear wax usually comes out on its own and doesnt need treatment. However, if you notice any build-up thats causing symptoms, there are some simple things you can do.

The first thing to try is putting drops in your ears to help soften the wax. You could try:

  • almond or olive oil drops in your ear twice a day for 2-3 days
  • chemical drops from your pharmacy – these are made up of a mild and safe chemical that softens the ear wax so it falls out

Dont try to pick the ear wax out with your fingers, cotton buds or any other object because this can push the ear wax in further and might damage your ear.

You shouldnt try to get the wax out yourself if:

  • your ears might be infected
  • you have hearing loss in one ear
  • you’ve had ear surgery or a punctured eardrum in the past

If this is the case, you should see your doctor for help.

If you have a bigger build-up of ear wax or your ear is blocked, your doctor or practice nurse might syringe out the ear wax, using body-temperature water to float it out. However, if your ear is infected or damaged, your doctor wont be able to syringe out the ear wax until your ear has healed.

Dont use ear candles to treat ear wax since these can cause burns and damage to your eardrums.

When To See A Doctor About A Clogged Ear

While ear wax is generally more annoying than dangerous, sometimes you need a doctor to clear it. If home remedies dont work, your earhurts or you have trouble hearing, Dr. Nguyen-Huynh says its smart to seek medical evaluation.

Someone needs to look in andsee if the ear canal is open or if the wax is plugging it up, he says.

If the situation is minor, you may be able to get yourears unblocked right then and there. If not, ENT doctors can useoperating microscopes to magnify inside the ear canal, loosen the wax and vacuumit out.

And a clogged ear may have othercauses. It could be a middle ear infection with fluid filling up the spacebehind the eardrum, Dr. Nguyen-Huynh cautions. Or you could have a viralinfection that affects the inner ear. In those cases, a doctor can diagnose andtreat you to prevent permanent hearing loss.

Do Practice Good Ear Hygiene

Your ears require very little care when it comes to cleaning because earwax naturally migrates from the ear canal to the outer ear where it dries and flakes. For most people, a simple wipe with a washcloth or tissue a few times a week will remove any earwax thats in the outer ear. Be gentle and dont tug or push too hard on your ear, you may damage the small bones.

If you need to clear earwax from your ear canal, a few drops of mineral oil or baby oil usually does the trick. Put a few drops in one ear, allow it to soak for about five minutes, then, tilt your head to remove the oil. Do the same on the other side, if necessary.

Nothing is more annoying than having an ear full of wax. It can affect your hearing, cause itchiness and be uncomfortablenot to mention it can also look pretty unsavory if some of it happens to make its way to the outside of your ear.

An excess of ear wax usually occurs when you have been sick or you have not washed out your ears in a while.

Ear wax itself is actually a good substance that is produced by the body to protect your ears from harmful bacteria and debris. The ear wax provides a sticky substance to capture any harmful invaders before they reach the inner ear.

While having a small amount of ear wax is great, it is still important to flush out old ear wax to keep your ears fresh. Here are some tips to help you out:

Give Ear Candles A Miss Too

Finally, let’s talk about Hopi candles. It is amazing, all the more so in this world of health and safety awareness, that anyone would willingly set fire to an object sticking out of the side of their head. But they do, because of the evidence of wax fragments that emerge from the process. The convection of the procedure can remove some wax from your ear, if the wax is dry, but most of the satisfying debris that remains at the end of a Hopi candle burn is from the candle itself that is made of wax!

There are solutions that are effective at preventing ear wax from building up, but ear wax is a natural phenomenon with antibacterial properties that lubricates and protects your ear.You need your ear wax.

Your best bet if you have a build-up of excessive wax is most definitely to have it removed using a microsuction procedure, where gentle suction is applied to suck the wax out. No oil pre-treatment is required, and the whole process is painless and entirely safe.

As for the olive oil and ear buds best to stick to cooking and make-up with these!

Put Down The Cotton Bud

And this brings me on to the second problem of a misinformed popular culture: cotton buds. So misinformed in fact that we actually call them ear buds. Anti-ear buds would be more accurate!

As the wax loosens in our ear canal, and we try to make sense of its new found mobility blocking and unblocking our hearing from one minute to the next, we become curious, and reach for the little blue stick with the fluffy ends. How could something so gentle-looking be harmful?

As the soft cotton brushes the opening to our ear canal, feelings of warmth, comfort and safety pass through us, some kind of flashback to childhood. Then we prod it around for a while, until we touch wax, when we have no choice because in the narrow channel of our ear canal, there is simply nowhere else to go but to push on further, squashing the wax down against our ear drum.

And sadly, whatever benefit we get from the wax that comes out stuck to the cotton bud end is unlikely to make up for the compacting effect on the wax still stuck in our ear.

They might be good for adjusting eye make-up, but cotton buds should never, ever go in your ears not unless you want to push whatever is in there further in.

Is Ear Wax Removal With Olive Oil Actually Effective

A study by Clegg et al1 conducted in 2010 which explored different methods of earwax removal concluded that although softeners are effective for softening and/or removing wax, which specific softeners are most effective remains uncertain. An experimental study by Rogers2 in 2015 however was conducted to determine whether daily lubrication of the external ear canal with olive oil enhances the normal expulsion of earwax. It found that whilst regular olive oil lubrication increased the ear canal contents, olive oil applied to the ears immediately before removing wax enabled total wax removal.

This reinforces our experience at Earworx. Earworx have found that whilst it does not occur 100% of the time, olive oil applied a few days before or on the day of the procedure helps to soften the earwax but does not break it down a perfect scenario for wax removal via microsuction. Our registered nurses then apply suction to the pre-softened wax and more times than not, it is removed in one plug.

Softened wax is also more likely to be carried out of the ear by the migrating skin layer it supports the self-cleaning process of the ear and is always worth a try as a first step where the ear is blocked with wax.

Dont Fall For Gimmicks

Most people dont need complex ear cleaning equipment and in fact, some over-the-counter remedies may damage your ear canal. Another method to avoid is ear candling. It involves placing a hollow tubular candle in your ear and lighting it, supposedly to draw out wax. It doesnt work and is dangerous.

Remove The Earwax Blockage With A Warm Cloth

This old-fashioned method involves heating the blockage to soften and remove it naturally. To do this, just heat a folded cloth with an iron. Once the cloth is warm enough, lie on your side and put your ear on it. Then, rinse your ear out with warm water using your shower head. You can also do the same thing with a damp cloth for even greater effectiveness .

To use olive oil for ear infectionsor, more specifically, for the pain associated with ear infectionsuse the same instructions listed above for applying the oil to your ear. Consider applying drops twice a day for up to 3 days, but be sure to call your doctor if symptoms dont start to improve within that time, since you may need antibiotics.

Some people take things a step further and make garlic-infused olive oil ear drops, which have additional antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Heres a quick how-to for garlic-infused olive oil ear drops:

  • Add 1 crushed clove of garlic and 2-4 tablespoons of olive oil to a small pot or pan
  • Set heat to low and warm the garlic and oil in the pan
  • To help diffuse the garlic, swirl the olive oil around the pan until things get fragrant
  • Remove the pan from the heat and allow your garlic oil mixture to cool
  • Strain out the garlic solids and discard pour the infused oil into a dropper bottle

Important safety note: Always refrigerate homemade garlic-infused ear drops, and use them up within 3 days. Otherwise, harmful toxins could begin to accumulate, according to the International Association for Food Protection.

How Ear Wax Build Up Can Affect Your Hearing Aids

If you wear hearing aids, ear wax can affect how they work. Significant amounts of ear wax can cause hearing aids to whistle. This will usually stop when the ear wax is removed.

Ear wax can also stop your hearing aids from working properly if it enters the tube or receiver. If this happens, you may have to clean your hearing aids more frequently.

Dont Use Cotton Swabs

Earol Olive Oil Ear Wax Removal Spray Kits Blockages ...

Cotton swabs are not made to go into the ear canal . Its OK to clean your outer ear with a cotton swab as long as you can resist the temptation to use the swab in your ear canal. First and foremost, a cotton swab can push earwax back toward the eardrum, leading to a possible wax blockage. Secondly, the cotton may come off and could cause an infection. Lastly, the cotton may irritate the sensitive skin in the ear canal, leading to infection.

And its not just cotton swabs, dont use keys, pen caps, bobby pins, fingernails or anything else thats long and pointy to clear your ears of wax.

Home Remedies: Cleaning Out The Earwax

Earwax is a helpful and natural part of your body’s defenses. It cleans, lubricates and protects your ear canal by trapping dirt and slowing the growth of bacteria. Earwax blockages commonly occur when people try to clean their ears on their own by placing cotton swabs or other items in their ears. This often just pushes wax deeper into the ear, which can cause serious damage to the lining of your ear canal or eardrum.

Never attempt to dig out excessive or hardened earwax with available items, such as a paper clip, a cotton swab or a hairpin.

If earwax blockage becomes a problem, you or your doctor can take simple steps to remove the wax safely.

How To Use It

Always check with your doctor before starting a new health regimen. If youd like to try using olive oil to remove excess earwax, be mindful that this treatment has not been medically proven.

To place a drop of olive oil into your ear, fill a clean eyedropper with olive oil. This will help control the amount of olive oil used. Lie on the opposite side of the affected ear, and gently squeeze one drop into your ear. It may help to gently pull your outer ear up and back to open your ear canal. Then lightly massage your ear to work the olive oil into the hardened wax.

Once you have cleaned out your ears, dry them thoroughly with a clean towel. A hair dryer set to the warm setting may help as well. Try this process once per week for one to two weeks. If you dont notice any improvement or if you experience side effects, see your doctor.

Choose A Saline Solution

Many saline solutions designed for cleaning the ear canals are sold in stores, but you can also make them yourself. To do this, just mix a tablespoon of sea salt in half a cup of warm water. Then, soak a compress in the solution and let the liquid flow drop by drop into the ear canal with your head tilted to the side. Saltwater can also be used as a preventative measure.

Is Olive Oil Dangerous For Your Ears

If youre thinking about using olive oil to soften your earwax, you should be mindful of some of the risks that it can pose. Wax softening drops of any variety are not safe for some people, such as people who have perforated eardrums, those who have had ear surgery including grommet insertion, or those with a current ear infection. If you are unsure whether wax softening drops are suitable for you, you should first consult with a clinician.

Some websites suggest that olive oil is more effective when heated up, however this can be potentially dangerous as you risk burning your ear canal or ear drum it is safest used at room temperature only.

What Causes Earwax Buildup

Some people are simply prone to producing excessive earwax. Overproduction of earwax does not always lead to blockage, but when it does it can be quite uncomfortable, or even painful. The most common cause of earwax blockage is a failed attempt at at-home earwax removal.

Using cotton swabs, bobby pins, or other foreign objects in an attempt to clean your ears or remove earwax often does more harm than good. Additionally, frequent use of headphones can promote earwax buildup and the pressure from heavy use can result in blockage.

An Alternative And Effective Wax Removal Method

It is a quick and dry process and is the method endorsed by ENT specialists.

Earworx nurses are all specially trained in the procedure they have all undertaken both a period of study and an extended practical placement to learn how to remove wax safely and gently. They will firstly take a history, explain the procedure to you, and then perform the procedure in a way that reduces risk and all under direct observation. You will even be provided with some education at the end as clients often want to know why did this happen to me or how can I prevent this happening again?

Earworx nurses perform wax removal as their core business, so when you attend an Earworx clinic, your wax is being removed by a healthcare professional who performs this procedure all day which is reassuring.
