Learning a new language is always a two-part process. You go to class and learn the basics of polite conversation and everyday objects, like “How are you?” “What is the weather like?” and “Where is the library?” Then you go home and search on your own to try and find out how to say the dirtiest words you can think of. Everyone does this. After four years of learning French in high school, the two sentences I remember best are “I would like a ham sandwich” and “You have a porcupine stuck up your behind.” I think it’s human nature to want to learn about the raunchy side of a new culture.

It was the same in college, when I started to learn American Sign Language. My friends and I would learn new vulgar words and phrases, and excitedly share them with each other. It was so interesting to see what this other culture did to express the same taboo concepts, to see how we were united in that, hearing and deaf alike, we all thought about these unmentionable things and put names to them. And the more I learned about American Sign Language, the more I wanted to share it with people! I wanted to let everyone else see how exciting and fun it was. After two and a half years of a successful YouTube channel posting videos as I’ve learned new phrases, I’m proud to share my new book, “Super Smutty Sign Language” , chock full of the best and filthiest phrases I’ve learned in ASL. Our Nonverbal Cues Can Help Babies Learn Language

Imagine I stranded you in the middle of a remote, isolated nation. You dont speak the local language, and the locals dont recognize any of your words. What would you do?

Very quickly, youd resort to pantomime. And as you tried to learn the language, youd soon appreciate that some people are a lot more helpful than others.

It isnt just that theyre friendlier. Some people just seem to have a better knack for non-verbal cues. They follow your gaze, and comment on what youre looking at. They point at the things they are talking about.

They use their hands and facial expressions to act out some of the things they are trying to say. And theyre really good at it. When they talk, its easier to figure out what they mean.

Researchers call this ability referential transparency, and it helps babies as well as adults. The evidence?

Erica Cartmill and her colleagues made video recordings of real-life conversations between 50 parents and their infants first when the babies were 14 months old, and again when they are 18 months old.

Then, for each parent-child pair, the researchers selected brief vignettes verbal interactions where the parent was using a concrete noun .

The researchers muted the soundtrack of each vignette, and inserted a beeping noise every time the parent uttered the target word. Next, they showed the resulting video clips to more than 200 adult volunteers.

What do we make of these results?

Yeah, its a lot, Ms. Burton, a 43-year-old sign language interpreter who regularly appears with Los Angeles County officials, said last week, laughing. She joked that a lot could be the story of her life these days.

Ms. Burton, a freelancer whose work usually prizes discretion, has recently joined an increasingly visible pantheon of essential workers: the people gesticulating on television and in internet live streams beside the governors and public health officers communicating the mighty struggle to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
