The unique signs used by people in Philadelphia hint at the history of sign language in the U.S.
Speech with a drawl, twang, clipped consonants, broad vowels, slurred words or extra diphthongs might give away that the speaker is from the American South, Boston, the Midwest or elsewhere. The spice that a certain region may lend to spoken language can even be strong enough to flavor non-audible language as well. Indeed, American Sign Language has its own accents. And like its audible counterpart, one of the strongest regional accents in ASL is that of Philadelphia residents, reports Nina Porzucki for PRI.
Researchers based at the University of Pennsylvania are documenting Philly ASL and asking exactly what makes it special. Leading the effort is linguistics lecturer Jami Fisher, who has a unique connection to the language: Her parents and her brother are all deaf, so she grew up signing in Philadelphia. She says she doesnt sign with her hometown’s accent, but she does understand it.
“When most people talk about a dialect, in spoken languages and sign languages too, a lot of what they center on are lexical differences, differences in words,” Fisher tells PRI. “For example, the sign for hospital is exceptionally different from what standard ASL would be, among other things.” She says that someone from another part of the country wouldnt recognize some of the signs used by Philly ASL signers.

Early Studies Of Historical Change
After Stokoes pioneering discovery that linguistic methods can be used to analyze and describe signed languages, a surge of linguistic research began to appear. One of the first works was the Dictionary of American Sign Language on Linguistic Principles . Other studies examined the historical relation between ASL and LSF . More recent contributions that have direct relevance to the study of historical change in signed languages include Supalla and Clark and Shaw and Delaporte .
In order to understand this work, we need to briefly describe the history of these two languages. The story is typically told that Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, an American minister living in Connecticut, met a young deaf girl, Alice Cogswell. Wishing to learn techniques for teaching deaf children Gallaudet traveled to Paris, where he observed the teaching methods used at the Paris Institute under the supervision of the Abbe de lEpée. Gallaudet and a deaf instructor at the Institute, Laurent Clerc, adapted FSL for use in the United States. They jointly established the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1817, the first school for the deaf in this country, using their modified signed language as the method of instruction.

No person or committee invented ASL. The exact beginnings of ASL are not clear, but some suggest that it arose more than 200 years ago from the intermixing of local sign languages and French Sign Language . Todays ASL includes some elements of LSF plus the original local sign languages over time, these have melded and changed into a rich, complex, and mature language. People in Philadelphia speak with a distinctive Philly accent, and those who converse in sign language are no different. The area is known for having one of the most distinctive regional sign-language accents, and two researchers based at the University of Pennsylvania are trying to figure out why.
In sign language, an accent is apparent in how words are signed differentlyits a lexical difference, similar to how some Americans say pop while others say soda, explains Meredith Tamminga, one of the professors conducting the research, in a statement.
Jami Fisher, her co-researcher, told PRI that many words in Philadelphia sign language are different from the American Sign Language standard. She added:
The sign for hospital is exceptionally different from what standard ASL would be, among other things. To the point where the signs are not able to be deciphered based on what they look like. People say, Oh, you talk weird, or, You sign strange.
In many ways, Philadelphia sign language is more French than ASL. As PRI reports, the first sign-language teacher in the United States, Laurent Clerc, was a Frenchman. ASL has evolved to a distinctive American sign language over time, but the Philadelphia version maintains more of its French roots.
