In summary, the question isnt What is hearable health technology? The question is: Why didnt anyone think of this before?

Amplifon Picks Up Spanish Hearing Aid Retailer For $618m

Italian hearing aid manufacturer Amplifon is acquiring hearing care retailer Gaes Group for 528 million , gaining a foothold in Spain, the tenth largest hearing aid retail market worldwide.

Gaes has more than 500 stores in Spain, with more than 20 in Portugal and about 70 in six Latin American countries: Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Panama, Colombia and Mexico. Most of its revenue comes from its Spanish retail business, but the privately owned company also wholesales devices such as hearing aids and cochlear implants, and manufactures its own Microson hearing aid.

In 2017, Gaes put up 210 million in revenue, of which 87% came from Spain and 83% came from its hearing care retail business. It employs about 1,800 people.

The deal is slated to close in the fourth quarter and is expected to save the combined companies 20 million by 2021.

“The combination with GAES profitable business, the benefits of greater scale and the strong financial profile will enable us to successfully pursue our recently communicated development plans, thus creating tremendous new opportunities to drive growth,” said Amplifon CEO Enrico Vita, in a statement.

Monitor Your Health At The Same Time

Feeling guilty about that tech wearable or smartwatch sitting in your drawer? Some hearing aids can now take their place. Known as healthables, these hearing aids are equipped with sensors and artificial intelligence that can track your health and activity levels via an app, as well as detect when you fall and call 911 or a loved one for you. Healthables provide greater quality of data than anything you wear on your wrist, because the ear is much closer to the brain, Rout says.

Think About Telecoil Technology If Youre Frequently Out And About

Do you enjoy going to the movies, the theater or concerts, or taking classes? Look for an aid with a telecoil , which loops into public sound systems to extend the listening range, improve listening comprehension and eliminate unwanted background noise, Galatioto recommends. Thanks to the Americans with Disabilities Act, all public assembly areas with sound amplification now have to be equipped with assistive listening systems. Hearing aids with this feature may be a little larger in size to accommodate the coil, but they wont cost you any extra because the technology has been around for a while.

A Little Spanish Translation Goes A Long Way

Editors Note:  This weeks post is from one of my dynamo audiologists, Jennifer T. Lamfers, AuD and AnaMarie Garcia who is an Administrative Specialist who took Jennifers ideas and made them work into a translation to Spanish that works with our area of Spanish Speakers.  We have a couple of people in the office who speak Spanish, but sometimes just the spoken word isnt enough.  Here is Jennifers story on challenges which came up with language barriers and how all of us in the office as well as those who come in to see us could benefit with some Spanish translation.

During graduate school I was fortunate to be selected to volunteer with a large Rotary Club that went to Mexico to test peoples hearing and fit them with hearing aidsservices and technology that often were otherwise not available to them. These people came from all over Mexico,  sometimes traveling two to three days by bus to attend the one-week clinic. I was selected because I am bilingual and could work independently of the few translators who joined us each year. As we  talked over  breakfast before clinic, we decided to write Spanish language testing instructions. The translationsimperfect as they werewere picked up by my graduate program, which gave them to  students with the goal of enabling some English-only speakers to muddle through with patients.

That encounter spurred me to work with AnaMarie to come up with these translations:

Having Disabilities But Not Disabled

“People with disabilities” is the preferred term because it refers to people as people, not as their disability. But even some advocacy organizations use “disabled.” The newspaper Able describes itself as a newspaper “positively for, by and about the Disabled.” Disabled American Veterans has held onto its name despite the turn in fashion. But consider that the act that protects people with disabilities is called the Americans With Disabilities Act, not the Disabled Americans Act.

One In Nine In Spain Say They Have A Hearing Loss

11.3% of people living in Spain say that they have a hearing loss. Among adults in Spain aged 18 or older, 13.3% say they have a hearing loss. Nearly 37% of those who say they have a hearing loss use hearing instruments, according to the EuroTrak Spain 2020 survey.

The number of people who think they have a hearing loss is slightly higher in Spain compared to other countries in Europe where similar EuroTrak surveys have been carried out in recent years, such as Germany, France, United Kingdom and Italy. On average, one in ten in Europe say they have a hearing loss.

Cost And Payment Options

Oticon hearing aids cost anywhere from $1,300 to $2,400.

Unfortunately, Medicare won’t cover the cost of hearing aids. The plan will cover the cost of hearing exams ordered by your doctor to determine whether you have hearing loss and how much. But it will not pay for routine exams.

Some private Medicare Advantage plans will cover hearing costs. If you have Medicare Advantage, you should check your plan to see what it includes.

In addition, most private medical insurance plans won’t cover hearing aids, although some do. Some provide a discount or a set amount toward the cost of hearing aids. And some plans offer optional hearing coverage. It’s worth checking your policy to see if you have coverage.

Funds in a Flexible Spending Account, Health Savings Account, or Health Reimbursement Account can generally be used toward the purchase of hearing aids.

Follow These Suggestions Before Your Next Purchase

How to say “what are you doing” in Spanish?

En español | Considering a hearing aid for yourself or a loved one? Forget everything you think you know about them. Traditional excuses for not wanting to wear a hearing aid such as theyre too ugly, they make me look old or theyre too complicated, simply dont apply anymore. Todays hearing aids are smaller, supercool looking and connect seamlessly with all of our modern technology, says Jessica Galatioto, director of audiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City. Unfortunately, however, hearing aids arent cheap typically ranging in price from $2,000 to $6,000 a pair nor are they covered by Medicare or most insurance. But that doesnt mean you have to sacrifice style or quality, if you know what to look for. Listen up as we explain the latest in technology, features and costs.

Rechargeable Models Are Revolutionary

Just as phone chargers freed us from cords, recharging technology is liberating hearing aid users from the endless job of changing tiny button batteries, which can be a real challenge for older people with vision or dexterity issues. Theyre about 10 percent more expensive than battery-operated models, but youre going to be spending a dollar a week on batteries with traditional models, so you will recoup the extra cost, says Brian Earl, associate professor of audiology and director of the Ear Lab at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio.

Spanish Language Instructions For Common Procedures

Note from Judy Huch, AuD: The following blogpost is from one of my dynamo audiologists, Jennifer T. Lamfers, AuD. We have a couple of people in our office who speak Spanish, but sometimes just the spoken word isnt enough. Here is Jennifers story that reflects her great problem-solving skills and how all of us might benefit from Spanish translation.

During graduate school, I was fortunate to be selected to volunteer with a large Rotary Club that went to Mexico to test peoples hearing and fit them with hearing aidsservices and technology that often were otherwise not available to them. I was selected because I am bilingual and could work independently of the few translators who joined us each year.

As we talked over breakfast before clinic, we decided to write Spanish language testing instructions. The translations, imperfect as they were, were picked up by my graduate program, which gave them to students with the goal of enabling some English-only speakers to muddle through with patients.

Spanish for Audiological Testing

¿Los quietes mas alto? ¿Lo quieres mas bajo? ¿O es comodo? Lo puedo subire.

Heres How The Translation Tool Works

Select your language and that of the other speaker to engage in a conversation.*

When you speak into your iPhone®, the Thrive Hearing app will translate your speech and display it on the screen in the other persons language. Show them the screen so they can see what youre saying.

When the other person speaks into your phone, the app will translate their speech, display it in your language on the phone, and also stream the translated text to your hearing aids in your language.

At Starkey Hearing Technologies, we work hard every day to help people connect with loved ones and the world around them.

You Dont Need To Splurge On The Latest Technology Unless You Want To

Spanish Phrase of the Day: En la actualidad = At the ...

A lower price tag doesnt mean lower quality. There is not much difference in speech understanding, sound quality and listening-related effort between premium level technology and basic technology, Rout says. More advanced technology gives audiologists more options and flexibility to address patients issues, but most people do just fine with basic technology.

Is Oticon Better Than Phonak

Based on ratings, Phonak would appear to be a better brand than Oticon. But Oticon is a quality brand that may be worth considering, depending on your specific needs and preferences.

While we rate Oticon OPN S the best hearing aid for iPhone users, we found Phonak the best overall brand on the market. We also rated the Phonak Naida Marvel 90 the most powerful hearing aid. The Phonak Paradise received our audiologist’s pick. Between Oticon and Phonak, the pricing is roughly the same.

Small Size Is A Big Deal

Since the best hearing aid is the one that someone will actually wear all the time, you can expect your audiologist to have a conversation about your individual style preferences.

Hearing aids look much more modern now with sleeker designs and metallic and matte finishes that are very attractive, Palmer says. Many people can use the small, behind-the-ear hearing aids that mix in with a persons hair and are hard to detect. In addition, the hearing aids that go completely in the canal are now so tiny they cannot be seen once placed in the ear.

Step And Movement Tracking

Healthable hearing technology can do things like track your daily steps and activity levels, motivating you to move more, which can help keep you healthier as you age. Experts agree that the head and the ear, specifically is a much more accurate place to measure our physical activity and monitor our bodys signals than on the wrist or in a pocket. By including 3D motion sensors like an accelerometer and gyroscope, Livio AI hearing aids are able to detect movement and gestures and give a more reliable readout of your steps and activity.

Livio AI hearing aids make it easy to stay on top of both your body and brain health. Paired with the Starkey Thrive Hearing app, Livio AI hearing aids track your physical activity and measure actions that are good for your brain health, like daily usage of your hearing aids, social engagement, and time spent listening actively. Each day, the Thrive app then combines your body and brain activity to give you a Thrive Wellness Score, which helps you know if youre meeting your physical and cognitive health goals.

The point, advises the disability advocacy group Mobility International USA, is to “put people first.” The group urges using positive language that avoids referring to people with disabilities as “the disabled, the blind, the epileptics, a quadriplegic,” etc. “It is fine to say ‘person with a disability,’ but terms like ‘challenged’ and ‘the disabled’ have fallen out of favor.” When in doubt about what term to use, ask.

In other words, people with disabilities, including hearing loss, want to be recognized because they want equal access, but that doesn’t mean they want to be defined by their disability. When thinking about the language of disability, keep those principles in mind.

Healthable Hearing Aid Features Of The Starkey Livio Ai

How Do you say
  • Do you have the Starkey AI hearing aids?

For anyone who already owns the Starkey Livio AI hearing aids, we wanted to remind you about the useful technology that is built into these hearing aids, making them healthable hearing aids.

The Livio AI is a world-first hearing aid that has artificial intelligence which can track brain and body health. Until now there has never been a device that can track and measure physical activity and cognitive health. Most fitness tracking devices use the wrist but research shows that the ear provides far more accurate data. In fact, the ear is the bodys sweet spot for reliable health monitoring and tracking, this is all available in your hearing aids, devices you wear every day.

Compatible with both Android and Apple smartphones, Livio AI provides a body score, brain score and an overall score, combining the two, using an app called Thrive. The Livio AI is truly a healthable hearing aid

Try A Different Model If Necessary

If you spend a month or so with hearing aids and still dont like them, youre not out of luck. Every state in the U.S. has a law that allows at least 30 days for you to test drive new hearing aids, Rout says. Youll receive a full refund, with the exception of a small fee for the audiologists time, which is also mandated by the state you live in.

    More on Hearing

Youre Going To Need An Audiologist

While your first conversation about hearing loss and an initial screening may be with your primary care physician, an audiologist is the expert trained to diagnose hearing loss and prescribe hearing aids. If youre experiencing gradual hearing loss without any medical issues like pain or discharge, you can schedule directly with an audiologist yourself, or ask your primary care doctor for a referral, says Catherine Palmer, director of audiology and hearing aids at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. You can also ask for an audiologist recommendation from an ENT practice.

    Oticon Hearing Aid Customer Reviews

Oticon hearing aids receive generally positive reviews from customers who say they’re happy with their devices and the service.

“I wanted to share an experience that highlighted additional value of my Oticon hearing aids. Unfortunately lost one recently out running errands, but where? The GPS “find my hearing aids” feature allowed me to track it down inside a very large grocery store, which was only 1 of several stops I had made that afternoon. Highly recommend these for sound quality and extra features like this one, saved the day!!”

“I am a professional Spanish interpreter; hearing is crucial. My audiologist recommended . I have had them for nearly two years with no problems. The difference in hearing is amazing. The first several days I walked around with my mouth open at the things I could hear.”

“I bought the Oticon More 1 hearing aids and I’m very happy. The sound quality is excellent, and the technology is first rate. I’m still learning all the capabilities of them but in the meantime, they have changed my life for the better. I can hear what people are saying to me, and my TV is no longer blaring loud!!”

“The sound quality of the Oticon instruments I purchased is an improvement over the instruments I previously wore. The new instruments fit perfectly and are very comfortable. I was especially impressed by the battery life. I had a severe hearing loss and the BTE units use a 675 battery.”

How Long Do Oticon Hearing Aids Last

How to Say âMILKâ in Spanish? | How to Pronounce Leche?

Oticon says hearing aids last from three to seven years but may last longer for some people. This can be influenced by how well the hearing aids are maintained and how much wear they get, as well as the quality of manufacture. It may be worth upgrading as your hearing changes and when new technology becomes available to better meet your needs.

Connecting With The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing At Church What To Do

Do you know someone who is deaf or hard of hearing? Do you know what to do and what to say?

Here are some tips in an infographic from the Church.

    • Ask how they want to be included and involved.
    • When talking, make sure they can see your mouth.
    • Get the persons attention with a wave or tap on the shoulder.
    • Shouting or over-enunciating is often not helpful.
    • Speak directly to the person, not the interpreter.
    • Using the terms deaf or hard of hearing is best.

How To Use The Livio Ai Extra Features

If youd like to learn more about how to use some of your Livio AIs features, please get in touch by , fill in our online contact form, or call us on 0345 222 0579, wed be happy to help.

Some of the features of the Livio AI hearing aid are:

    • Tracking your steps, body movement & physical activity
    • Measuring social engagement & active listening
    • Fall detection

    Fall Detection And Alerts

    GCSE Spanish describing a photo

If youre an older adult or care for someone who is falling is likely to be high on your list of worries. And rightfully so, according to Age UK:

    • According to data released by NHS Digital, nearly 100,000 older people suffered hip fractures in 2017/18
    • Falls are the most common cause of injury related deaths in people over the age of 75 with over 5,000 older people dying as a result of a fall in 2017, a 70% increase on the numbers in 2010, according to Age UK.

How fall detection and alerts work

    • The hearing aid wearer selects up to three contacts to be notified if they fall.
    • They can enter contacts easily into the Thrive Hearing app.
    • The auto alert feature automatically sends an alert to the contact if the hearing aid wearer falls.
    • The alert contains the GPS location of the wearer.
    • The contact can then immediately call the wearer back to check on them or otherwise get them help.
    • The manual alert feature allows the wearer to simply tap their hearing aid to send an alert for a fall or non-fall related event.

    People With Hearing Loss

The only term that seems to be accepted by everyone is “people with hearing loss.” There are two problems with that phrase: It’s cumbersome and it has no easy singular. I don’t think many people would say, “I am a person with hearing loss.” You might say, “I have a hearing loss,” or, as I often do, “I have a hearing impairment.”

However, a number of national organizations have chosen to shift away from using hearing loss altogether in favor of more positive language. The Hearing Association of New Zealand began as the League for Hard of Hearing. Better Hearing Australia avoids any suggestion of disability. Britain’s Royal National Institute for Deaf People , founded in 1911, changed its name 100 years later to Action on Hearing Loss.

How Does Oticon Compare To Other Brands

Oticon hearing aid reviews are generally good. Consumer Reports gives Oticon good grades for fit and comfort. The brand ranked third in its customer satisfaction survey, behind Costco/Kirkland and Signia, and tied with Phonak, Widex, and Resound.

The brand was given a score of four out of five points for ease of changing or charging the battery and three out of five for battery life, ease of cleaning, and value.

We rank the Oticon Opn S as best for iPhone users. However, we note that it’s better with iPhones than with Android phones.

BestCompany, a well-known review site that compiles customer feedback on hundreds of products, gives Oticon high marks for offering hearing aids for all ages of users and every level of hearing loss from mild to profound and for its BrainHearing technology.

    The Benefits Of Hearing Aids

Hearing aids make everyday life and work easier.

Hearing aids are believed to have a positive impact in the workplace. In the survey, 96% of the hearing aid users stated that their hearing aids are helpful in their work life.

Most of the hearing aid users feel more confident moving around a city since they began to wear hearing aids.

71% of all hearing aid users in the survey think they should have gotten their hearing aids sooner. The main reason for this is missing out on social life.

In the survey, hearing aid users experienced significant positive impact from their hearing aids on different aspects of their lives. Especially communication effectiveness and ability to participate in group activities improve with hearing aids.

Compared to impaired hearing aid non-owners with significant hearing loss, hearing aid owners feel less exhausted in the evenings. Quality of sleep also improves when using hearing aids.

All in all, 98% of hearing aid owners in Spain declare that their hearing aids improve their quality of life at least sometimes.
