The most common cause of sensorineural hearing loss is presbycusis or age-related hearing loss. This is a gradual process that is typically noticed in older adults. According to the Center for Disease Control, roughly 30% of adults over the age of 65 have permanent hearing loss. Presbycusis occurs due to the natural degradation of the inner ears hair cells. In 2011, a clinical trial supported by the NIDCD showed that intratympanic injection of steroids was as effective as oral steroids. Central Or Cortical Deafness

Central or cortical deafness is a rare and dramatic clinical presentation. The first description of this rare disorder is attributed to Wernicke and Friedlander . They reported a patient with bilateral temporal-lobe lesions but with no apparent damage to the hearing organ, who showed no awareness of sounds. Wernicke and Friedlander coined the term cortical deafness, which has been used since as well as the term central deafness. These findings contrast with abnormal results in evoked potentials that arise from the thalamocortical pathway and beyond, such as middle-latency and late auditory evoked potentials, indicating that the behavioral lack of response to sounds is due to impaired perceptual awareness of the sound.
