Homeopathy & Ear Infection

Homeopathic Medicine for Ear Infections or Ear Pain

The biggest advantage of using homeopathic remedies for ear infections promise over conventional cures is that they work on the holistic approach to treat not only the symptoms but also eradicate the root cause of the infection.

Merits of homeopathic medicines in treating;ear;infections:

Homeopathic mode of treatment gives complete recovery from ear infections. Homeopathic remedies for ear infection are natural and devoid of side effects. They boost the natural defense system of the body to fight with the infectious process. Homeopathic remedies also give immunity against engagement with ear infection in the future. They can discharge from the ear, effectively manage the pain and also fever associated with ear infection. They also give a shield in preventing complications resulting from ear infection such as ear drum perforation, mastoiditis and hearing loss.

Why To Avoid Antibiotics When They’re Not Needed

Antibiotics often are not needed to treat an ear infection.

  • Most ear infections will clear up on their own. This is true whether they are caused by bacteria or a virus.
  • Antibiotics kill only bacteria. They won’t help with an infection caused by a virus.
  • Antibiotics won’t help much with pain.

There are good reasons not to give antibiotics if they are not needed.

  • Overuse of antibiotics can be harmful. If antibiotics are taken when they aren’t needed, they may not work later when they’re really needed. This is because bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics.
  • Antibiotics can cause side effects, such as stomach cramps, nausea, rash, and diarrhea. They can also lead to vaginal yeast infections.

Ear Infections And Kids Anatomy

Its their anatomy that makes them particularly susceptible.

Older children and adults have a more efficient system for clearing colds. The fluid that builds up in the ear during and after an upper respiratory illness drains down the Eustachian tube, the canal that links the ear to the nose and throat.

In children younger than age 7, the Eustachian tube is shorter and more horizontally positioned, so the fluid takes longer to drain. The build-up can press on the eardrum, causing pain that is especially noticeable to kids when they lay down, breastfeed or suck on a bottle.

Stop Eating Food Youre Allergic Or Intolerant To

Fight Ear Infection

Your ear infection is a symptom of a problem. If theres no pus and no physical infection, its very likely that your ear infection is a symptom of an allergy. This is especially common in children, where the immune system isnt as developed. If you continue to eat the food that youre allergic to or theres a dietary intolerant to, you will find that the ear infections are more common and get worse over time.

Make a note of all the times that ear infections have happened. Track the type of food given and look out for any patterns. Its not just ear infections, either. Youll want to look out for any digestive problems and other signs of illness. This can be difficult in children, as theyre not always the best at communicating their problem.

You can talk to your doctor about getting a food sensitivity test. However, doctors may want you to do a trial and error test instead, which is something you can do at home. Cut out the food that you believe your child is/you are allergic to and see how common the ear infections occur. If you believe multiple foods could be a problem, cut everything out and add it back into the diet one at a time.

Dairy and gluten intolerances or allergies are some of the most common issues linked to ear infections. It may not be all dairy, as goats milk is sometimes fine, but cows milk causes a problem. Its due to the amount of lactose and other natural elements within the cows milk. Nut allergies or sensitivities can also be a problem.

What Is Ear Infection

The swimming season may end up with a common cold or ear pain. Common cold can also give you earache. Ear infections can affect the outer ear as well as the middle ear. The ear infection occurs due to viral, bacterial or fungal agents. The medical term for outer ear infection is otitis externa. One can engage outer ear infection from swimming in polluted water or from damaging the skin in the outer ear by putting objects in the ear including ear buds, pen or a key. The medical term for middle ear infection is otitis media. The middle ear infection is a result of nose or throat infection. Cold and throat infections trap the middle ear to the infections. The infection from the throat travels to the middle ear with the help of Eustachian tubes. Eustachian Tubes connect the throat to the middle ear.

Neck Exercises For Arthritis

Setting your neck straight

We put a lot of impact on our joints over the years. Eventually they start to show the signs of wear and tear. With age, arthritis can cause the joints in our knees, hands, wrists, and feet to become stiff and sore.

Arthritis also affects the vertebrae in our neck, which get worn down from years of supporting our head. After age 60, more than 85 percent of people have arthritis in their neck, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons .

If your neck is sore, see a doctor to find out exactly whats causing your pain. You can visit your family doctor or see a specialist like an orthopedist, rheumatologist, or osteopathic doctor. Your doctor can also advise you on therapies to help relieve the pain such as postural changes, physical therapy, yoga, or Pilates. And your doctor may recommend pain relieving medication or steroid injections.

You can also try basic exercises at home. Though you might be tempted to keep your neck still when it hurts, staying immobile will only increase the stiffness. It will also cause you to lose even more movement. Stretching and strengthening exercises will help keep your neck limber and reduce your arthritis pain.

How To Treat An Ear Infection At Home

Ear infections can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or rarely yeast. There are three areas in the ear where ear infections can occur in adults and children.

  • Outer ear infections : An outer ear infection most commonly experienced is often known as swimmers ear. This infection usually is due to bacterial infection of the skin tissue covering the ear canal. Excessive immersion in water or injuring the ear canal by putting things in it makes you more likely to develop an outer ear infection.
  • Middle ear infections: A middle ear infection is an infection just behind the eardrum with pus trapped in the adjacent hollow cavity of the facial bone. Middle ear infections frequently are a complication of the common cold in children. Most middle ear infections are caused by viruses and will resolve spontaneously. Bacterial infections cause some middle ear infections, which requires antibiotic treatment.
  • Inner ear infections: Inner ear infections are very rare, and usually are caused by a virus. These infections are more accurately characterized as inflammation of the structures of the inner ear . Since these structures affect hearing and balance, inner ear infections cause symptoms such as ringing of the ears or dizziness and balance disruption . Usually, inner ear infections in adults and children need medical treatment.

  • The outer earincludes the cartilaginous structure and ear canal ending at the eardrum .

    Best treatment for ear infections

Trying to find remedies for babys whose immune systems are still developing is hard. Doctors dont want to prescribe medication if they can help it. Your breasts will have the best cure for your baby. Yes, breast milk is a powerful treatment option. Its one of the big reasons why doctors recommend mothers breastfed their babies for the first 12 months .

If you are breastfeeding, consider expressing some of your breast milk for a natural cure for ear infections. The breast milk is full of antibodies that are completely made by you. These antibodies will speed your childs natural healing process. Youre not fighting the infection, but youre encouraging the babys immune system to kick start and get rid of the infection instead.

The breast milk also has some anti-inflammatory properties. Youll find that the swelling goes down, boosting the healing benefits.

This works best when the milk is dropped straight into the ears. You can also rub it gently around the ears, although the sensitivity due to the inflammation may be too much for your child to allow the touch on the ears. You can use this remedy every few hours.

Breast milk isnt just good for children. It can be used on adults if you choose to. Its also good for other minor wounds and some eye infections!

    Caring For Your Child

    • Give your child acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever, pain, or fussiness. Be safe with medicines. Read and follow all instructions on the label. Do not give aspirin to anyone younger than 20. It has been linked to Reye syndrome, a serious illness.
    • If the doctor prescribed antibiotics for your child, give them as directed. Do not stop using them just because your child feels better. Your child needs to take the full course of antibiotics.
    • Place a warm washcloth on your child’s ear for pain.
    • Encourage rest. Resting will help the body fight the infection. Arrange for quiet play activities.

Many doctors will prescribe an antibiotic, such as amoxicillin, to be taken over seven to 10 days. Your doctor also may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, or eardrops, to help with fever and pain.

If your doctor isnt able to make a definite diagnosis of OM and your child doesnt have severe ear pain or a fever, your doctor might ask you to wait a day or two to see if the earache goes away. The American Academy of Pediatrics issued guidelines in 2013 that encourage doctors to observe and closely follow these children with ear infections that cant be definitively diagnosed, especially those between the ages of 6 months to 2 years. If theres no improvement within 48 to 72 hours from when symptoms began, the guidelines recommend doctors start antibiotic therapy. Sometimes ear pain isnt caused by infection, and some ear infections may get better without antibiotics. Using antibiotics cautiously and with good reason helps prevent the development of bacteria that become resistant to antibiotics.

If your doctor prescribes an antibiotic, its important to make sure your child takes it exactly as prescribed and for the full amount of time. Even though your child may seem better in a few days, the infection still hasnt completely cleared from the ear. Stopping the medicine too soon could allow the infection to come back. Its also important to return for your childs follow-up visit, so that the doctor can check if the infection is gone.

    What Causes An Infection

Millions of microbes live on our skin and inside our body, and generally cause little harm. Trillions more live in the environment or on other animals. The most common organisms that can cause infection include:

    • Bacteria. These are microscopic, usually single-celled organisms that are food everywhere . Common bacterial infections include acne, pneumonia, bronchitis, and ear infections.
    • Viruses. These consist of a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat, that is only able to multiply within the living cells of a host. Common viral infections include the colds, flu, and herpes
    • Fungi. These are multicellular organisms that are free-living in soil or water or form parasitic or symbiotic relationships with plants or animals. Examples of fungal infections include Vaginal thrush and athletes foot.
    • Parasites. These live in or on an organism of another species and derive nutrients at the hosts expense, such as pinworms or tape worms.
    • Prions. These are a type of protein that can trigger normal proteins in the brain to fold abnormally. Some are spread by infected meat products .

Normally, your immune system helps protect your body against these invaders. However, cancer, chemotherapy, medications such as steroids, heavy metals, toxins, a poor diet or sleep, and many other health conditions can damage your immune system reducing your ability to fight infection.

Dont smoke and avoid secondhand smoke as much as possible. Smoking and secondhand smoke both contribute to the incidence of ear infections. In addition, keep up with your vaccinations, including the flu vaccine.

What Happens If My Child Keeps Getting Ear Infections

To keep a middle ear infection from coming back, it helps to limit some of the factors that might put your child at risk, such as not being around people who smoke and not going to bed with a bottle. In spite of these precautions, some children may continue to have middle ear infections, sometimes as many as five or six a year. Your doctor may want to wait for several months to see if things get better on their own but, if the infections keep coming back and antibiotics arent helping, many doctors will recommend a surgical procedure that places a small ventilation tube in the eardrum to improve air flow and prevent fluid backup in the middle ear. The most commonly used tubes stay in place for six to nine months and require follow-up visits until they fall out.

If placement of the tubes still doesnt prevent infections, a doctor may consider removing the adenoids to prevent infection from spreading to the eustachian tubes.

While theres no clear evidence about the effectiveness of olive oil on its own for common ear problems, its also not associated with any serious health consequences, so you can still try it to see for yourself.

To apply drops to your ear, use a glass dropper or you can dip a cotton swab in olive oil and allow the excess to drip into your ear. Dont put the cotton swab or any other object in your ear.

You can use room-temperature olive oil, though some people prefer to warm it up in a pan over low heat. Make sure to test the temperature on your skin first. The oil should be just slightly warm, not hot.

Follow these instructions to safely apply olive oil to your ears at home:

  • Lie on your side with the affected ear facing up.
  • Gently pull your outer part of your ear back and up to open your ear canal.
  • Put two or three drops of olive oil in the opening of your ear.
  • Gently massage the skin at the front of the entrance to your ear canal to help the oil work its way in.
  • Remain on your side for 5 to 10 minutes. Wipe away any extra oil that drips from your ear when you sit up.
  • Repeat in the other ear if needed.
  • Tailor the application to your need, and contact your doctor if you arent seeing the desired results:

    Adenoid And Tonsil Removal

Adenoid removal or adenoid and tonsil removal may help some children who have repeat ear infections or fluid behind the eardrum. Children younger than 4 don’t usually have their adenoids taken out unless they have severe nasal blockage.

To treat chronic ear infections, experts recommend removing adenoids and tonsils only after ear tubes and antibiotics have failed. Removing adenoids may improve air and fluid flow in nasal passages. This may reduce the chance of fluid collecting in the middle ear, which can lead to infection.

When used along with other treatments, removing adenoids can help some children who have repeat ear infections. But taking out the tonsils with the adenoids isn’t very helpful.footnote 2

Tonsils are removed if they are often infected. Experts don’t recommend tonsil removal alone as a treatment for ear infections.footnote 3
