Curing Hearing Loss: Looking Towards The Future
Since hearing loss is such a prevalent problem in the United States and around the world, there are a number of organizations dedicated to finding a cure for hearing loss. The Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss ;is part of the Stanford School of Medicine and states that the goal of SICHL is to devise treatment that repair the damaged inner ear and restore loss hearing, quiet tinnitus, and improve balance. They are concentrating on four key areas of research: stem cell therapy, gene therapy, molecular therapy, and targeted neural stimulation. Stem cell therapy explores the possibility of repairing damaged cells or growing new parts from a persons own skin cells. Research into genetic hearing loss has shown that the majority of hearing loss are caused by mutation in only three genes, which gene therapy intends to target. Molecular therapy looks into utilizing drugs as a cure for hearing loss, and targeted neural stimulation aims to use work with auditory nerves to make hearing clearer as well as louder.
Researchers at the department of otolaryngology at Columbia University Medical Center are also working hard to develop a hearing loss cure. The scientists there are using gene therapy to combat genetic hearing loss, which could mean that children born with hearing loss will be able to hear. Researchers are also studying cochlear bone development to learn more about conditions that cause hearing loss due to defective bone development.
Aural Rehabilitation And Listening And Auditory Communication Enhancement
Unfortunately, hearing aids will not correct hearing loss or restore hearing to normal levels. However, the use of hearing aids and assistive listening devices along with auditory training can help maximize hearing abilities. Training may consists of:
- Audiologic rehabilitation classes
- Learning good listening strategies
- Establishing guidelines for communicating with those around you
In addition, UCSF Audiology researchers are leaders in the quest to develop home based therapies for enhancing listening ability.

Hearing Loss And Tinnitus
sthomas: Do any of these devices eliminate the constant ringing in the poorer hearing ear?
Sarah_Sydlowski,_AuD,_PhD: Unfortunately, most single-sided deafness devices are not able to help tinnitus. There is no cure for tinnitus although some patients do benefit from using hearing aids or maskers in the ear that has ringing. In SSD, the hearing loss is usually so severe that these devices are not strong enough to stimulate the ear. Similarly, SSD devices are not designed to actually stimulate the affected ear and would not be strong enough to impact the tinnitus. Currently, the only option for very severe tinnitus and single-sided deafness is cochlear implantation. This is only in the clinical trial stage at select clinics. Early research suggests that this technology may hold promise for individuals with severe-to-profound hearing loss and severe tinnitus because the cochlear implant provides stimulation directly to the hearing nerve.
mn890: I had a hearing aid years ago when I still had some hearing. When I took it out, I had terrible tinnitus. Will these new devices cause the same problem?

Drug Therapy That Regrows Cells That Help Your Hearing
The big idea:;Your body will repair damage to your inner ear in much the same way that salamanders regrow a tail.
How it might work:;A drug delivered into your inner ear would turn on chemical switches to regrow the cells responsible for hearing and most hearing loss. People born with hearing loss or those who lose hearing later in life would get a few injections to restore some or all of their hearing.
Why it’s exciting:;In normal inner ears, these crucial hair cells which are long and flexible and look like tiny fields of grass react dynamically when sound vibrations arrive from the outer ear: they start to dance. The dancing movement of the hair cells is what lets sound travel up the auditory nerve to the brain. We’re born with about 15,000 of these delicate cells in each ear, and once damaged, they are gone for good in humans, at least. In the 1980s, researchers made an interesting discovery, says Lawrence Lustig, M.D., an otolaryngologist at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. They found that birds can regrow their damaged hair cells after trauma; fish, reptiles and amphibians can repair their hair cells, too. Because of this ability, these animals never permanently become deaf. Hearing researchers are trying to replicate this process in humans.
Editors Note: This story was corrected on Aug. 5 to say that drug therapy regrows cells that help hearing.

Who: 1 In 4 People Projected To Have Hearing Problems By 2050
Nearly 2.5 billion people worldwide or 1 in 4 people will be living with some degree of hearing loss by 2050, warns the World Health Organizations first World Report on Hearing, released today. At least 700 million of these people will require access to ear and hearing care and other rehabilitation services unless action is taken.
“Our ability to hear is precious. Untreated hearing loss can have a devastating impact on peoples ability to communicate, to study and to earn a living. It can also impact on peoples mental health and their ability to sustain relationships,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. This new report outlines the scale of the problem, but also offers solutions in the form of evidence-based interventions that we encourage all countries to integrate into their health systems as part of their journey towards universal health coverage.
The report, launched ahead of World Hearing Day on 3 March, underlines the need to rapidly step up efforts to prevent and address hearing loss by investing and expanding access to ear and hearing care services. Investment in ear and hearing care has been shown to be cost-effective: WHO calculates that governments can expect a return of nearly US$ 16 for every US$ 1 invested.

Hearing Loss: A Common Problem For Older Adults
On this page:
Hearing loss is a common problem caused by noise, aging, disease, and heredity. People with hearing loss may find it hard to have conversations with friends and family. They may also have trouble understanding a doctors advice, responding to warnings, and hearing doorbells and alarms.
Approximately one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss, and nearly half of those older than 75 has difficulty hearing. But, some people may not want to admit they have trouble hearing.
Older people who cant hear well may become depressed, or they may withdraw from others because they feel frustrated or embarrassed about not understanding what is being said. Sometimes, older people are mistakenly thought to be confused, unresponsive, or uncooperative because they dont hear well.
Hearing problems that are ignored or untreated can get worse. If you have a hearing problem, see your doctor. Hearing aids, special training, certain medicines, and surgery are some of the treatments that can help.
Hearing Loss Is On The Rise
The number of people with more than 20 dB of hearing loss is very large and growing rapidly. Data from 1990 to 2017 were fit by a quadratic function that was used to predict hearing loss prevalence from 2018 to 2040. Dashed lines indicate 95% confidence intervals. An experimental hearing loss drug that’s delivered directly into the eardrum moved to the next phase of drug testing, reported;Massachusetts-based Frequency Therapeutics, the drug’s developer, in late 2019.
The experimental drug is delivered viainjection into the middle ear, whereit is absorbed by the inner ear.
The drug, dubbed FX-322, is given via injection into the ear drum. Researchers hope it will successfully and safely convert stem cells into stereocilia, the hair cells in the cochlea that are responsible for hearing.
A phase 2a clinical trials means they’ll continue to explore the drug’s safety, as they did in previous trials. Researchers;also will look more closely at dosing requirements and effectiveness. The trial is scheduled to end in September 2020.

Eyeglasses That Turn Speech Into Subtitles
The big idea: You’ll be able to read what people are saying.
How it might work: An app on your smartphone would listen to a conversation and transcribe the speech into sentences in real time. The text would be delivered instantaneously to your enhanced eyeglasses using augmented reality . The result: It would be like watching TV with subtitles, except without a screen.
Vuzix, a tech company, recently released smart glasses that work with transcription software.
Why it’s exciting:;Automatic speech-to-text programs have proliferated in recent years. Live computer-generated captions are now available on most videoconferencing platforms, and smartphone apps can generate real-time transcriptions for in-person conversations. The problem: Users must be in front of a computer or looking at a phone, which detracts from full social engagement, says Raja Kushalnagar, an information technology professor at Gallaudet University who studies speech-to-text technology for people with hearing loss. Now companies are making subtitles more natural by using smart glasses technology, which can project text to a user’s field of vision in a comfortable, nonintrusive way. Kushalnagar, who is deaf, recently tested out a prototype. I was able to walk on the trail with my son and hold a conversation with him easily, which was harder with the phone app, he says. I could also cut vegetables and cook as I listened to him talk about his day.”
