Why Do We Offer Mercury Free Batteries
As battery technology advances, the focus is on mercury free batteries.
More and more countries are now legally required to use mercury free batteries, and the number is growing yearly. Mercury Free technology is State of the Art and the only battery fulfilling the new IEC Standard defined for streaming HIâs. A key parameter in the IEC Standard is 15 minutes non-stop Streaming. During this 15 min a very high current is drawn from the battery. If the battery is not specifically made for this purpose there is a high risk that the hearing aid will stop working or work intermittently.
Here Are Some Top Tips:
|â||Hearing aid batteries can lose power when you least expect it. Always carry a spare pair so you will never be caught out.|
|â||Give your hands a wash before touching your hearing aids and batteries. Dirt and grease from your hands can damage the hearing aid.|
|â||Keep your hearing instrument batteries away from things like coins, keys or any other metal objects that may come into contact with them. This can cause premature discharge.|
|â||Always store your hearing aid batteries at room temperature. Extreme temperatures can have an adverse negative effect on both your hearing aids and your hearing aid batteries.|
Considering Battery Shelf Life
One more thing make sure when you look at the size on the packaging for a new battery, pay attention to the battery size and not the use by date. Batteries have a shelf life and of course its important to know whether or not your batteries are past their expiration date. However, dont confuse the expiration date with the battery size.

Audio Streaming And Battery Life
As has been documented in the past, audio streaming to hearing aids can use up an awful lot of batteries. Our survey respondents seem to confirm this. We were somewhat surprised that the difference wasnt larger! I suppose some respondents may have included telecoil audio streaming or other forms of less battery intensive audio streaming.

What Brand Of Hearing Aid Do You Use
Phonak was the most popular hearing aid brand in our survey with more than one-quarter of participants reporting Phonak as their hearing aid brand. Following behind was Oticon, then Resound, Starkey, Widex, etc.
What brand of hearing aid do you use?
We were just asked why Costco hearing aids werent included in our survey. We want to clarify that Costco does not manufacture hearing aids, but rather sells hearing aids manufactured by companies like Phonak under their brand Kirkland Signature. We actually grouped the Costco hearing aids in with the relevant hearing aid manufacturers when compiling the results of this survey.
Hearing Aid Battery Storage
You should store your hearing aid batteries at room temperature. Avoid storing your batteries in hot places since heat will shorten the life of the batteries. Refrigeration is also not recommended. Batteries should not be carried loose in your pocket or purse. If a battery inadvertently comes into contact with a metal object such as coins or keys the battery may charge, leak or in rare incidences even rupture. To prevent this from occurring keep unused batteries in the original packaging or in a battery holder.
Store and discard batteries in places that cannot be reached by infants, children or pets. If a battery is swallowed, see a doctor immediately. For recommended treatment, call the National Button Battery Hotline collect at 202-625-3333.

Hearing Aid Battery Life Drives Satisfaction
Somewhat unsurprisingly, our respondents report being more satisfied with their batteries when they last longer. Based on our data it seems that hearing aid manufacturers should shoot to deliver at least 75 hours of battery life. Otherwise they will face unhappy customers!
Thats all we have for now. Please leave your feedback in the comments section below, and let us know if you have any questions!
Hearing Aid Brand And Battery Life
Our survey also asked participants about which hearing aid brands they use. As you can see Widex, Oticon, and Starkey were the highest rated on this measure. However we do want to draw attention to the fact that our sample size is likely too small to draw any firm conclusions from. Another factor is wireless streaming, and this may differ from brand to brand.

How Are Mercury Free Batteries Different From Standard Batteries And How Do They Compare To Each Other In Performance
The running time for Mercury Free and Standard batteries is equal when used within the same category of hearing instruments. Mercury Free cells are also more environmentally friendly because there is no mercury added to the cell.
The Mercury Free cells are developed for new requirements of hearing aids with wireless functionality.
Note: Be aware that for hearing instruments with wireless functions, battery life in general is shorter than it would be with a non-wireless hearing instrument. This is independent of battery composition .

It Packs A Power Punch For Its Small Size
Lithium is a really light metal, so when its used for batteries, it allows for a lot of high density energy to be stored in a small size, according to Witt.
Lithium-ion can handle the power required for newer, advanced technologies and still keep its small size. Scott Witt, Phonak Director, Product Management.
In the past, manufacturers used nickel metal hydride batteries. However, as technology grew such as Bluetooth capabilities it required more and more power, said Witt.
With extra technology, it causes the battery to drain quicker, which can lead to some rechargeable hearing aids not lasting a full day or needing to be larger to handle the power requirements.
Lithium-ion can handle the power required for these newer, advanced technologies and still keep its small size while lasting a full day, said Witt.
It Doesnt Need To Be Replaced
Unlike silver zinc rechargeable batteries that need to be replaced every 10 to 12 months, the Phonak lithium-ion solution will last approximately the life time of the hearing aid, which is now six years. Without the need to change the batteries, our rechargeable hearing aids no longer need a door.
Since the lithium-ion battery is hermetically encased within the hearing aid, this eliminates the seams, which is where moisture and dirt can creep in.

Why Does My Hearing Aid Battery Suddenly Last A Shorter Time
Statistics show that, in most of the cases, the reasons for a short running time are not necessarily production faults, but rather:
- Environmental influences .
- Personal hearing habits have changed .
- The hearing aid was in use longer than usual .
- The hearing aid is new, or the type or brand of the hearing aid has changed.
- The new hearing aid has additional features that require more energy.
Improper handling can also reduce the running time of the hearing aid battery, e.g.:
- The battery tab is removed and activation period as too short!! It has to be 2 minutes or more before it is inserted into the hearing aid.
- The hearing aid is not switched off over night or after a long period of non-use.
- The battery loses capacity due to a short circuit when mishandled .
- The battery is stored in a warm environment .

Choosing The Right Hearing Aids
First of all, its important to bear in mind that not all hearing aid batteries are compatible with all hearing aids. When youre looking at buying batteries, you have to make sure that you know which size your hearing aid takes. There are four different sizes of batteries, each able to fit into a different kind of battery compartment on your hearing aid.
While there may be some outliers, most battery brands will use the same color tabs to help easily identify the different sizes at a glance.
How Do Rechargeable Hearing Aids Work
Rechargeable hearing aids work very similar to smartphonesyou must charge them frequently to keep them functional. Most of them come with an easy-to-use docking station. Each night, just take out “your ears,” plug them into the charger, and go to bed. By morning, they should be ready for another’s day of full use. Battery life will varyheavy use of Bluetooth, for example, may drain the battery faster.;The downside? It’s pretty simple: If you can’t charge your hearing aids, they won’t work. So they don’t work well for everyone, and that’s where hearing aids with disposable batteries come in.
Button batteries like these are commonlyused in hearing aids
Before rechargeable devices became standard, all hearing aids came with disposable batteries. These days they’re a lot less common.
Zinc-air button disposable;batteries, also known as “button batteries,”;are the other common option.;Because zinc-air batteries are air-activated, a factory-sealed sticker allows them to remain inactive until it is removed. Once peeled from;the back of the battery, oxygen will interact with the zinc in the battery and turn it on. To get the best performance from a zinc-air battery, wait about;one minute after removing the sticker;to fully activate before placing it in the hearing device. Replacing the sticker will not deactivate the battery, so once the sticker;is removed, the battery will remain in an active state until the power is drained.

Identifying The Right Hearing Aid Battery Size For Your Aid
What hearing aid battery kind should I buy? is a hard question to answer generally, because there are many distinct models of hearing aids, and each takes a battery that matches it and contains adequate energy to operate it. The simplest situation to deal with is if you currently use a hearing aid; if thats the case, look at the owners manual that came with it or contact the hearing care provider who sold it to you to identify the correct battery. If you are still looking for a hearing aid and attempting to choose which style is right for you, you might wish to do some comparison shopping to assist you in your decision. Different sizes of hearing aid batteries vary greatly in cost, and in the life of the battery, so your selection of hearing aid can affect how much money you spend in the long run using it.
The manufacturers of hearing aids and hearing aid batteries have made life simpler for you by implementing a standardized color coding system, to make finding the right size easier. Batteries of the same type and size will always have the identical color code on their packages, no matter who made them.
The most common ones are:
Size 10 / Yellow Hearing aid batteries with a yellow color code are Size 10, and can be the easiest to obtain because they are typically used in Completely-In-Canal and In-The-Canal types of hearing aids; their battery lifespan is shorter, generally 80 hours.
Where To Buy Hearing Aid Batteries
Hearing aids can be purchased at a specialist hearing care provider, but they can also be found online as well as in pharmacies, electronics stores or sometimes even grocery stores.
If you are unsure about what the best hearing aid batteries are for your devices, it would be advisable to speak to a hearing care specialist.

Hearing Aid Battery Size
Hearing aid batteries come in various sizes providing different levels of power and battery life. Generally speaking the more significant the hearing loss, the higher the power consumption of the hearing aid and the larger are the batteries needed to deliver that power.;
Another factor influencing the battery size of a hearing aid is the hearing aids own size. Small hearing aids, like in-the-ear hearing aids, need to rely on smaller hearing aid batteries. Invisible in the ear hearing aids use dedicated battery technology to keep their size as small as possible and allow them to be placed deep inside the ear canal while still providing high quality sound.
The most commonly used battery sizes are 10, 312, 13 and 675. They are color-coded for easy identification:
- size 10: yellow
- size 675: blue
