Hearing Sign Language Users
While many deaf people need sign language, so do others who are not deaf. In fact, there has been a discussion in the deaf and hard of hearing community about substituting the term “signing community” for the term “deaf community” for this very reason.
Non-deaf users of sign language include hearing babies, nonverbal people who can hear but cannot talk, and even gorillas or chimpanzees. Each of these instances points to the importance of continuing the language so that communication is more inclusive.
Learn How To Fingerspell Like A Pro
Once youve learnt how to fingerspell each letter of the alphabet, its time to polish your form! Check out these tips to improve your fingerspelling:
- Pause between spelling individual words. This improves the comprehensibility of your signing.
- Keep your hand in one place while spelling each word. This can take practice, but it makes it much clearer for others to read back. An exception to this is when you are fingerspelling an acronym. In this instance, move each letter in a small circle to let people know not to read the letters together as a single word.
- If you are fingerspelling a word that has a double letter, bounce your hand between those two letters to indicate the repetition of that letter. You can also do this by sliding the letter slightly to the side to indication it should be doubled. It can be difficult to not bounce between every letter when first learning to fingerspell. You can use your free hand to hold your write to help steady it while practicing. Eventually, youll get used to keeping your hand steady by itself while fingerspelling.
- Keep your fingerspelling hand at the height of your shoulder. This is the most comfortable position for your signing and the other persons reading.
- Keep your pace consistent. There is no need to race through when spelling a word. Its more important that each letter is clear, and the overall rhythm is consistent.

When my uncle was younger, he toured the island making a small living by giving martial arts demonstrations, Wisnu translated as Kolok Getar continued his story in a whirl of karate-chop hand signs. He met many deaf people but could hardly communicate with them, because, if they knew sign language at all, it was a different version . Those deaf people were often lonely because they could only talk with one or two members of their close family.
If its your destiny to be born deaf, said I Ketut Kanta, spokesman for Bengkalas Deaf Alliance, then this would very likely be the best place in the world to grow up!
Kata Kolok is only used in the village of Bengkala, Bali, where an unusually large proportion of the population has been born deaf
Hearing people are known as enget, and no matter where you are in the village you will often come across mixed groups of kolok and enget all chatting in what they call deaf talk. Whether youre visiting the primary school, at the central temple or sipping sweet black kopi at Pak Supardas little warung , youre likely to see deaf and hearing people in animated but silent conversation, or jostling each other with boisterous laughter.
Kolok and enget are paid equal rates for work in the village, I Ketut Kanta told me. Nevertheless, it isnt easy for deaf people to find a job outside the village, and it is sometimes hard to get by here on local labour wages of about US$5 a day.

Where Did Asl Originate
No person or committee invented ASL. The exact beginnings of ASL are not clear, but some suggest that it arose more than 200 years ago from the intermixing of local sign languages and French Sign Language . Todays ASL includes some elements of LSF plus the original local sign languages over time, these have melded and changed into a rich, complex, and mature language. Modern ASL and modern LSF are distinct languages. While they still contain some similar signs, they can no longer be understood by each others users.

Online Sign Language Dictionary Sites
Who uses a sign language dictionary? Think of the times you’ve watched someone giving a speech or lecture while, nearby, another person used rapid movements of hands, torso, and face to “sign” what the person speaking was saying. Their use of sign language allowed deaf or partially deaf people to “hear” right along with you and everyone else.

Basics Of Alphabets And Fingerspelling
Most people start their sign language journey by learning the A-Z or alphabet equivalent in sign form.
The use of the hands to represent individual letters of a written alphabet is called fingerspelling. Its an important tool that helps signers manually spell out names of people, places and things that dont have an established sign.
For example, most sign languages have a specific sign for the word tree, but may not have a specific sign for oak, so o-a-k would be finger spelled to convey that specific meaning.
Of course, not every language uses the Latin alphabet like English, so their sign language alphabet differs as well. Some manual alphabets are one-handed, such as in ASL and French Sign Language, and others use two-hands, like BSL or Auslan. Though there are similarities between some of the different manual alphabets, each sign language has its own style and modifications, and remains unique.

Others point out that manual labour and a need to fend for themselves when they leave the village has given rise to the kolok toughness. Whatever the reason, there is a noticeable level of respect in the village for the kolok community, and several villagers have set out to champion their cause.
Many hearing residents of Bengkala have learned to sign in order to communicate with kolok family and friends
Linguists have established that the Kata Kolok language, like their unique dance, has little in common with other sign languages.

Not A Universal Language
There is no single sign language used around the world. Like spoken language, sign languages developed naturally through different groups of people interacting with each other, so there are many varieties. There are somewhere between 138 and 300 different types of sign language used around the globe today.
Interestingly, most countries that share the same spoken language do not necessarily have the same sign language as each other. English for example, has three varieties: American Sign Language , British Sign Language and Australian Sign Language .

Girl Helps Paramedics Through Sign Language Skills
Ten-year-old Yesenia Diosdado is revising an English assignment. But it turns out the language that’s proven to be most valuable is the one she knows that’s silent. Yesenia’s mother started teaching her sign language when she was just a year old.
“I have always explained to me kids — even if you may never use it — the importance of sign language is everywhere,” her mother Susan Mulidore told CBS News.
A little over a week ago Yesenia found out her mother was right all along. She was playing outside with a friend in Lenexa, Kansas.
“I heard a weird sound so I wanted to go look,” she told CBS News.
It turned out the sounds and commotion were a car accident. Yesenia saw the paramedics trying to talk to a woman who’d been hurt and was still in the car. She could see they were having trouble communicating. That was until the brave girl rushed in and started signing with her. “Are you hurt?” she asked the woman using her hands.
The woman told her that she was indeed injured, and with Yesenia’s help also instructed the paramedics which hospital she wished to be admitted to.
“We would not have even been able to establish what her injuries were without significant delays of having to establish another means of communication,” said Chris Winger, one of the paramedics who was present at the scene of the accident.
