Your GP or practice nurse will look inside your ears to check if they’re blocked and might carry out some simple hearing tests.
They may suggest using eardrops for a bit longer, or they may carry out a minor procedure called ear irrigation to clean out your ear canal.
If these treatments aren’t suitable or don’t help, your GP may refer you to the ENT department of your nearest hospital for more specialised treatments such as microsuction or an aural toilet.

Drainage From The Ear
A very common symptom of earwax buildup is drainage from the ear. It’s relatively normal for a small amount of ear wax to drain from the ear every now and then. However, individuals should start looking for other signs of earwax buildup if they notice an excess of drainage from the ear. As earwax builds up within the ear canal, it may start to drain onto the outer ear canal, which is a visible portion of the ear. If patients notice drainage of earwax, it’s almost a certainty it is caused by a buildup of earwax.
Once individuals notice this symptom, it is safe to use a washcloth to clean the outer portion of the ear canal. However, it is essential that individuals don’t try to remove the earwax with a cotton bud. Doing so will only push the earwax further in while also potentially damaging the eardrum. What Is The Treatment For Impacted Ear Wax

Does The Color Of Earwax Mean Anything
Healthy earwax comes in a range of colors, but sometimes color does have meaning. First you have to consider if you have wet earwax or dry earwax.
Wet earwax comes in a range of colors including light yellow, honey-color, and orange-brown. Wet earwax is sticky. Dry earwax is likely to be whitish or gray in color and is flaky.
Generally, in either case, darker colored earwax is older earwax. It is more likely to contain dust and has had more exposure to the air.
If your earwax is more of a discharge, like it contains white or greenish pus, or you find it caked on your pillow after sleeping, you should contact your healthcare provider. You should also contact your healthcare provider if you see blood or if your earwax is quite obviously black.
There’s another interesting thing related to having wet or dry earwax. People of European and African descent overwhelmingly have wet earwax. How Earwax Is Professionally Removed
A common way to remove ear wax in urgent care or at your primary doctors office is toflush out the ear wax using a forceful saline or water injection into the ear canal to extract the wax. While this technique is often used, it is not recommended by our ENT surgeons as it can cause dangerous perforations and permanent hearing loss.

In order to safely remove wax, a microscope is used so that the provider has the ability to see the walls of the ear canal and the tympanic membrane very closely. It also allows the use of both hands while removing the wax.
When there is not an excessive amount of ear wax impaction, a curet is used to gently scrape out and remove an excess build-up of earwax. When wax has built up significantly, a soft mixture of hydrogen peroxide is often used to soften it and then a small vacuum is inserted into the ear to suction out excessive earwax build up.
Sometimes, an auriscope is inserted into the ear which the provider will use to determine the degree of build-up in the ear and whether an ear wax removal is called for. During the procedure, one of our providers will utilize this camera, which displays onto a large screen, to monitor the removal of the impaction.

What To Do If You Think Your Ear Is Blocked
Never try to remove a build-up of earwax yourself with your fingers, a cotton bud or any other object. This can damage your ear and push the wax further down.
If the earwax is only causing minor problems, you can try buying some eardrops from a pharmacy. Using drops may make your hearing or symptoms a little worse at first before getting better. These can help soften the earwax so that it falls out naturally.
There are several different types of eardrops you can use, including drops containing sodium bicarbonate, olive oil or almond oil.
However, eardrops aren’t suitable for everyone and some can irritate the skin. For example, eardrops shouldn’t be used if you have a perforated eardrum .

Is Ear Microsuction Painful

There is a wind-like noise when the probe is in the ear canal and modern machines have greatly reduced operating noise. If the wax is very soft a soft sucking sound can be heard as the debris is sucked up the probe and into the tube.

How Is Earwax Buildup And Blockage Treated
Earwax can be removed in several ways. Some of these methods can be done at home.
You can clean the outside of the ear by wiping with a cloth. Dont wad up the cloth and push it into the ear canal.
You can use cerumenolytic solutions into the ear canal. These solutions include:
- Mineral oil.
- Hydrogen peroxide or peroxide-based ear drops .
- Saline solution.
With these solutions, you put a few drops into the affected ear with a dropper and lie on the opposite side so that the solution can drip into your affected ear. You can also soak a cotton ball and put it over the affected ear and let the solution drip into the ear.
Another option is irrigating or syringing the ear. This involves using a syringe to rinse out the ear canal with water or saline solution. Generally, this is done after the wax has been softened or dissolved by a cerumenolytic.
Finally, your healthcare provider can remove the wax manually using special instruments. The provider might use a cerumen spoon, forceps, or suction device.
Note: Your ears _should not _be irrigated if you have, or think you have, a perforation in your eardrum or if you have tubes in the affected ear.
How not to clean your ears
Dont use suction devices for home use . They arent effective for most people and arent recommended.
Ear candles, which are advertised as a natural method to remove earwax, are ineffective. They can also cause injuries such as burns to the external ear and ear canal and perforation of the eardrum.
What Does It Mean When Earwax Becomes Impacted
We say that earwax is impacted when it has built up in the ear canal to such a point that there may be signs that something isnt quite right. Its important to note that most people might never need to clean their ears. Ears are designed to clean themselves. Earwax buildup and blockage often happens when people use items like cotton swabs or bobby pins to try to clean their ears. This only pushes the earwax farther into the ears and can also cause injury to the ear.

Hearing Loss And Dizziness: What Does It Mean
