How You Can Help

What Types of Hearing Aids Does Veterans Affairs Provide for Veterans? | Audiology | theSITREP

There are many things that you can do to help your loved one adjust to his or her new hearing aids. You can be a patient one-on-one conversation partner as your loved one practices listening. Another thing that many people try is you read the newspaper or a book out loud as your loved one with hearing aids reads along silentlythis can help him or her re-learn how to recognize particularly difficult sounds.

You can also quiz him or her on sound recognition. Come up with a list of word pairslike dish and fish or pop and topthat differ by only one consonant sound. Read them aloud so your loved one can watch your lip movements, and then practice with him or her by having that person look away and try to differentiate between the words. Consonant sounds are the most difficult.

How To Get Hearing Aids

See a GP if you’re having problems with your hearing. They may refer you to a hearing specialist for an assessment if they think you might need a hearing aid.

If your specialist recommends hearing aids, talk to them about the different types available and which is best for you. You may be able to try a few types before choosing.

Some types may be available to use straight away. Others may need to be custom-made after your ear has been measured or a cast of your ear has been taken. These will usually be ready in a few weeks.

When your hearing aid is ready, it will be programmed to suit your level of hearing loss. You’ll be shown how to use it and how to look after it.

Another appointment will be arranged for a few weeks later to check how things are going.

What Research Is Being Done On Hearing Aids

Researchers are looking at ways to apply new signal processing strategies to the design of hearing aids. Signal processing is the method used to modify normal sound waves into amplified sound that is the best possible match to the remaining hearing for a hearing aid user. NIDCD-funded researchers also are studying how hearing aids can enhance speech signals to improve understanding.

In addition, researchers are investigating the use of computer-aided technology to design and manufacture better hearing aids. Researchers also are seeking ways to improve sound transmission and to reduce noise interference, feedback, and the occlusion effect. Additional studies focus on the best ways to select and fit hearing aids in children and other groups whose hearing ability is hard to test.

Another promising research focus is to use lessons learned from animal models to design better microphones for hearing aids. NIDCD-supported scientists are studying the tiny fly Ormia ochracea because its ear structure allows the fly to determine the source of a sound easily. Scientists are using the flys ear structure as a model for designing miniature directional microphones for hearing aids. These microphones amplify the sound coming from a particular direction , but not the sounds that arrive from other directions. Directional microphones hold great promise for making it easier for people to hear a single conversation, even when surrounded by other noises and voices.

How We Research And Review Hearing Aids

Can My Hearing Aids Hurt My Ears?

Our Reviews Team tests the waterproof claims of various hearing aids

We only recommend hearing devices that we think will have a positive impact for our readers, so we began our testing process by reviewing hearing aid research. We also consulted with audiologists and geriatric care experts to better understand the research, the needs of people with hearing loss, and the hearing aid brands and models on the market. We read thousands of reviews on trusted third-party sites such as Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot to understand customers experiences and where they think hearing aids are falling short. Next, we conducted a survey to discover what people love about their hearing aids, what features they use, and what their biggest challenges are. We focused on brands that:

Hearing Aid Cochlear Implant Or Both

The differences between how cochlear implants and hearing aids work and how they are fitted has for a long time meant that they are used independently of one another.

Cochlear implants require surgical implantation, and so have traditionally been recommended only for people with profound hearing loss. On the other hand, hearing aids have typically been recommended for people with moderate hearing loss, because theyre easy to use and require at least partial hearing in order to be effective.

But what if someone used both a cochlear implant and a hearing aid at the same time? Would they be able to interpret the sounds around them any better than if they just used a hearing aid or a cochlear implant alone? Could the acoustic filters in a hearing aid provide additional benefit to someone with a cochlear implant? To answer these questions, researchers can test the speech recognition of hearing subjects as they listen to cochlear implant and hearing aid simulations.

Are Patients With Profound Hearing Loss Able To Use Hearing Aids

Hearing Aid Self Help

There is the assumption that people who have profound hearing loss are not going to be able to benefit from hearing aids, but this is far from true. All hearing aid manufacturers offer some version of the hearing aid that can assist patients who cannot hear a noise under 90dB. These high-powered hearing aids function and look just like a regular hearing aid. Patients with profound hearing loss will use larger hearing aids since their need to hear is louder.

Conduct A Listening Experiment Yourself

You can conduct your own version of the type of the simulation experiment described above. Youll hear shortened simulations of a hearing aid, a cochlear implant, and a hearing aid and a cochlear implant combined, and record the words you hear. After youve heard all of the simulations, youll use a key to score how well you understood speech from each simulation.

  • Download this response sheet where you will write down the words and phrases that you hear.
  • Using headphones, listen to each of the experimental simulations of speech below. Each simulation consists of a female voice speaking with background voices that are male. Focus on trying to understand the words spoken by the female voice. Write the words that you think you heard spoken by the female voice on the response sheet.
  • Use this speech simulation answer sheet to score which words you got correct and which you did not, then calculate the percentage of words you got correct for each simulation. To make calculations easier, record your scores in the spreadsheet version of the answer sheet.
  • Optional: repeat the experiment with other listeners if you would like to calculate an average for each scenario.
  • Graph the percentage of words you got correct for each simulation on this chart, listing the different testing conditions in the order in which they appear below.
  • Condition 6: CI + 1500Hz hearing aid filter in noise

    Edmond Ayvazyan His Eet

Hearing Instrument Specialist & Electronic Engineering Technologist, Hearing Aid Source

Nine out of 10 people with hearing loss can improve their hearing with the help of hearing aids. But even after investing in them, some Canadians continue to suffer from a reduced quality of life, explains Hearing Instrument Specialist Edmond Ayvazyan of Hearing Aid Source, a company which offers free hearing aid assessments at their two locations in Toronto. This issue causes undue stress, and can result in detachment from social situations, decreased earning potential, depression, balance issues, and an accelerated onset of dementia.

When a new client comes seeking help for their hearing aids, we often hear, Ive spent all this money, Ive been back several times, I have the technology but its not helping me when I need it most. I still cant hear at a distance, a meeting, at church, or in the theatre, Ayvazyan says. Often, the clients he sees have been told to accept their hearing capacity as is, and that no further adjustments are possible with their hearing aids. However, this simply does not have to be the case.

Ayvazyan sees two common problems with hearing aids: poor fit and improper tuning.

Hearing Aids Are Used By People Of All Ages

Sound is such a critical part of our lives. It’s a fundamental sense for all people and the more you can hear, the better life becomes.

One of the most important ways that sound is received is through your ear . Hearing deficits are usually caused by nerve damage in one or more parts of your ear and can lead to permanent hearing loss if not treated.

Hearing aids work with tiny electrical impulses to help restore lost hearing and prevent further hearing loss or reduce how much you have to rely on other senses like vision. How hearing aids work

Making Sure The Hearing Aid Is Working Right

Your babys audiologist can show you how to keep the hearing aid clean and working. Here are a few things that he or she might talk about.

Whistling soundsBabies and children outgrow earmolds quickly. If the earmold is too small, you will hear a whistling sound. That means that sounds from the hearing aid are leaking out. Sometimes you can adjust the earmold in your childs ear and the whistling will stop. But if the whistling doesnt stop after adjusting the earmold, it might be too small. If this happens, call your childs audiologist for an appointment so he or she can check it. Your child might need a new earmold.

Listening to the sounds from a hearing aidYour babys audiologist might give you a small listening tool that is specially made for hearing aids. You can join the hook of the hearing aid to the tube of the stethoscope. Your audiologist will show you how it works.

BatteriesYou can buy hearing aid batteries at drug stores, grocery stores, and many other stores. Most batteries have a small tab hooked to them. Take this off and put the batteries in the hearing aid following the instructions from your childs audiologist or hearing aid instruction booklet. Your babys audiologist might also give you battery testers. These will help you know if the battery is still working.

Getting dampness out of the hearing aidExcess moisture can make your childs hearing aid not work. Your babys audiologist can show you how to keep the hearing aid dry.

If you work with a healthcare professional such as an audiologist, theyll give you a full audiogram, or hearing test, which provides concrete information about your level of hearing loss.

They can also explain the differences between hearing aid styles and make a recommendation about which style might be best for you.

Audiologists may not offer the same variety of brands and styles that you might get from an online retailer.

If you purchase hearing aids through an online retailer, you may have the option of taking an online hearing test. These tests may be accurate, but may not be as comprehensive or personalized as some people would like.

Social Stigma In The Deaf World

On the other hand at number 12, there are also social stigma in the deafworld as well.

There are certain people who have this perception or attitude and they believe that people who wear hearing aids are not proud of their deaf identity and they are not welcomein the Deaf community.

And personally, I dont agree with that. I dont agree that there should be gatekeepers anyway and thats a whole other conversation, because thats just complex.

But there are social stigma attached for people in the Deaf community where they believe if you wearing hearing aids, then you dont belong with us, you are not part of us and all these things.

And as a result, people might feel like, you know what?

I want to be part of our group and I want to be involved in that.

But because of that stigma, I have to remove my hearing aid just so I can be involved in a community, which is a shame. Its a real shame.
