Worlds Largest American Sign Language Database Makes Asl Even More Accessible
BU deaf studies researchers say the ASL-LEX 2.0 database could aid ASL learners and lead to new ASL-based technologies akin to Siri, Alexa
The words joke and ruin might not rhyme in English. But, thanks to a new, interactive database of American Sign Language , called ASL-LEX 2.0, we can now see that these two words do in fact rhyme in ASL.
In ASL, each word has five linguistic parameters: handshape, movement, location, palm orientation, and non-manual signs. Rhymes involve repetition based on one or more of these parameters, says Michael Higgins, a first-year PhD student in Boston Universitys Wheelock College of Education & Human Developments Language & Literacy Education program. He is deaf, and has been using the ASL-LEX 2.0 database to investigate the relationship between ASL and English proficiency in deaf children.
Since launching in February 2021, in conjunction with a published paper highlighting the ways the database has expanded, ASL-LEX 2.0now the largest interactive ASL database in the worldmakes learning about the fundamentals of ASL easier and more accessible. ASL-LEX 2.0 is an invaluable resource. Being able to access linguistic informationincluding the five parameters on every signin one place is enormously helpful, Higgins says.
Along with a visual demonstration, each sign in ASL-LEX 2.0 comes loaded with other information, like the average age that people learn that sign and other details.

Do Baby Signing Programs Boost Long
Overall, the evidence is lacking.
The very first studies hinted that baby sign language training could be at least somewhat advantageous, but only for a brief time period .
In these studies, Linda Acredolo and Susan Goodwyn instructed parents to use baby signs with their infants. Then the researchers tracked the children across 6 time points, up to the age of 36 months.
When the childrens language skills were tested at each time point, the researchers found that babies taught signs were sometimes a bit more advanced than babies in a control group.
For instance, the signing children seemed to possess larger receptive vocabularies. They recognized more words.
But the effect was weak, and detected only for a couple of time points during the middle of the study.
For the last two time points, when babies were 30 months and 36 months old, there were no statistically significant differences between groups .
In other words, there was no evidence that babies benefited in a lasting way.
And more recent studies using stringent controls have also failed to find any long-term vocabulary advantage for babies taught to sign .
For example, Elizabeth Kirk and her colleagues randomly assigned 20 mothers to supplement their speech with symbolic gestures of baby sign language.
The babies were tracked from 8 months to 20 months of age, and showed no linguistic benefits compared to babies in a control group.

Tips For Teaching Baby Sign Language
Whether you opt for the spontaneous, do-it-yourself approach, or you want to teach your baby gestures derived from real sign languages, keep the following tips in mind.
1. You can start early.
Babies begin learning about language from the very beginning. They overhear their mothers voices in the womb, and they are capable of recognizing their mothers native language distinguishing it from a foreign language at birth.
Over the following months, their brains sort through all the language they encounter, and they start to crack the code. And by the time they are 6 months old, babies show an understanding of many everyday words like mama, bottle, and nose.
Many babies this age are also babbling repeating speech syllables like ma ma ma and ba ba ba.
If a 6-month-old baby says ba ba after you give her a bottle, could it be that shes trying to say the word bottle? If an infant sees his mother and says mama, is he calling her by name?
Its entirely possible. And as noted above, research suggests that many babies are speaking their first words by the age of 10 months.
So we might expect that babies are ready to observe and learn about signs at an early age even before they are 6 months old.
2. Introduce signs naturally, as a part of everyday conversation, and dont try to drill babies.
3. Keep in mind that its normal for babies to be less than competent. Dont pretend you cant understand your baby just because his or her signs dont match the model!

A Resource For Research And Learning
Our initial exploration of ASL-LEX was fascinating, and once the database went live, other researchers began to use it. Some are studying how signs are learned or processed in the brain. Others are now using the database to develop automatic sign recognition technologies like Alexa or Siri for ASL.
Research is only one aspect of ASL-LEX. Another purpose is to help teachers and parents of deaf children teach ASL more constructively. Children learn their first language from the people around them. But deaf children arent typically surrounded by people who know ASL, and this can delay their language development. We hope that parents and teachers will use our freely available ASL-LEX database to identify and teach the most common and helpful signs first.
Language is at the heart of all human communities, and sign languages are no exception. There is much work to be done to ensure full equity for all deaf people. Our ASL-LEX project provides a window into ASL and, by extension, the linguistic minds of those who use the language. Our team has envisioned many ways ASL-LEX could be used, but it is the thousands of unexpected ways that researchers, educators, community members and artists could use it that we are truly excited about.

So when we talk about the heat, it can be you personally hot because youre working in the kitchen and its really hot, or youre outside and the garden and its really hot. Or just simply youre talking about the weather. When somebody asks you, whats the weather like today? Its hot. Whats it like? Oh, its really, really hot.

Non-manual and temporal prosodic cues of a sign language can be used to distinguish certain speech acts, but the patterns for others are highly confusable. Our results across groups show that commands are distinct among imperative types in that they are the most easily identified type. This result is in agreement with our earlier establishing of command as the strongest speech act, because the speaker is highly invested in the action she wants the addressee to do. We predicted in our earlier discussion, and indeed found here, a pattern distinguishing two classes of imperativescommands versus the restmapping onto speaker goal vs. addressee goal imperatives . The results of our study are thus in line with recent analyses of the semantics and pragmatics of imperatives, and the core distinction we drew in section Imperatives.
Addressee goal imperatives such as advice, explanation, and permission were found to not have unique prosodic patterns. The cues that appear on these sentence types were subtle distinctions of distribution, and sometimes appeared on only one of the two signseither the verb or the noun. For example, advice and permission both used head tilts but sentences of advice were more likely to have this cue on the verb, and sentences of permission were more likely to have it on the noun. The variability is in agreement with the weaker nature of those imperatives, i.e. weaker in the sense that the speaker is less invested in their realization.

Babies Learn Words Faster When We Label The Things They Point At
Most babies begin pointing between 9 and 12 months, and this can mark a major breakthrough in communication.
But the impact of this communicative breakthrough depends on our own behavior. Are we paying attention? Do we respond appropriately?
As psychologists Jana Iverson and Susan Goldin-Meadow have noted, a baby who points at a new object might prompt her parent to label and describe the object.
If the parent responds this way, the baby gets information at just the right momentwhen she is curious and attentive. And that could have big implications for learning .
Experiments have confirmed the effect: Babies are quicker to learn the name of an object if they initiate a lesson by pointing. And if the adult tries to initiate by labeling an object that the baby didnt point at? Then there is no special learning effect .

But Surely There Are Situations Where Signing Is Easier Than Speaking
I think thats very likely. For example, the ASL sign for spider looks a lot like a spider. Its iconic, which may make it easier for babies to decipher. And it might be easier for babies to produce the gesture than to speak the English word, spider, which includes tricky elements, like the blended consonant sp.
The same might be said for the ASL signs for elephant and deer.
But most ASL signs arent iconic, and, as I explain here, some gestures can be pretty difficult for babies to reproduce just as some spoken words can be difficult to pronounce.
So its unlikely that a baby is going to find one mode of communication easier across the board.

Our Nonverbal Cues Can Help Babies Learn Language
Imagine I stranded you in the middle of a remote, isolated nation. You dont speak the local language, and the locals dont recognize any of your words. What would you do?
Very quickly, youd resort to pantomime. And as you tried to learn the language, youd soon appreciate that some people are a lot more helpful than others.
It isnt just that theyre friendlier. Some people just seem to have a better knack for non-verbal cues. They follow your gaze, and comment on what youre looking at. They point at the things they are talking about.
They use their hands and facial expressions to act out some of the things they are trying to say. And theyre really good at it. When they talk, its easier to figure out what they mean.
Researchers call this ability referential transparency, and it helps babies as well as adults. The evidence?
Erica Cartmill and her colleagues made video recordings of real-life conversations between 50 parents and their infants first when the babies were 14 months old, and again when they are 18 months old.
Then, for each parent-child pair, the researchers selected brief vignettes verbal interactions where the parent was using a concrete noun .
The researchers muted the soundtrack of each vignette, and inserted a beeping noise every time the parent uttered the target word. Next, they showed the resulting video clips to more than 200 adult volunteers.
