What Causes Excessive Earwax
Typically the body removes earwax and dead skin through the action of chewing or talking. Jaw movement causes the earwax to move from your inner ear towards your outer ear.
About 12 million people get treated for excess earwax every year in the United States. Children and older adults are most at risk for earwax blockage, known as impaction. Reasons for earwax buildup include:
- Trapped earwax and dead skin: Can be the result of the normal aging process can also be caused by harmful earwax removal methods
- Narrow ear shape: Can be affected by the shape of an individual’s ear, scar tissue from multiple and/or severe ear infections, or increased amounts of hair in the ear canal
- Overproduction:Can be the result of trauma, trapped water, and other unknown causes
Getting Help From Your Doctor
Most people dont need frequent medical help for earwax removal. In fact, the Cleveland Clinic says that a once-a-year cleaning at your annual doctors appointment is usually enough to keep blockage at bay.
If youre unable to clear the wax or if your ear becomes more irritated, seek medical treatment. Other conditions may cause symptoms of earwax buildup. Its important that your doctor can rule those out. They can use an otoscope, a lighted instrument with a magnifier, to see clearly into your inner ear.
To remove wax buildup, your doctor may use:
- irrigation
- a curette, which is a small, curved instrument
Follow your doctors instructions for aftercare carefully.
Most people do well after earwax removal. Hearing often returns to normal immediately. However, some people are prone to produce too much wax and will face the problem again.
What Earlier Studies Have Found
A lot of prior research has found that hearing loss is connected with an increased risk of memory problems.
In a 2018 analysis published in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, researchers pooled the results of 36 studies and found that age-related hearing loss was linked to an increased risk of dementia and cognitive decline and impairment.
Fewer studies have been conducted on whether the use of a hearing aid might delay or prevent the onset of dementia, says Jennifer Deal, an assistant scientist in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, who wasnt involved in the new study.
But like the new research, several small studies that have addressed the question in recent years have found that the use of hearing aids is linked with a lower risk of dementia.

Healthy earwax comes in a range of colors, but sometimes color does have meaning. First you have to consider if you have wet earwax or dry earwax.

People with dry earwax lack a chemical that makes sweat smell.

Treatment Of Wax In The Ear
Wax is removed by the ENT surgeon while viewing the ear canal under the microscope.
The ENT surgeon removes the wax with an instrument or by syringing it out with a stream of water.
If the wax is too hard and stuck drops may be given for 2 or 3 days to soften the wax before syringing it.
Do not try to remove wax on your own with ear buds or sharp instruments. Since the childs ear canal is very small you may end up damaging the ear canal or the ear drum.

Treatment Of Hearing Loss In Cats

Total Earwax Blockage Is Rare
Soundwaves only need a tiny opening in the ear canal to reach the eardrum. Thus, even a lot of earwax shouldnt cause noticeable hearing loss.
If, however, the ear canal is plugged tightly with earwax, and cerumen impaction is severe enough to cause hearing loss, there will most likely be other signs and symptoms noticed before the hearing loss such as dizziness, ear fullness , itchiness or pain or ringing in the ears.
Rarely does total cerumen impaction happen. And if it does, rarely does it occur without there being additional signs that something is wrong.
