What Tools Can You Use To Clean Hearing Aids

Having the right tools in your hearing aid maintenance kit is key. Make sure to clean your hearing aids on a flat surface to avoid dropping and damaging them.

Wax removal brush: Hearing aids can block earwax from naturally exiting the ear. This causes earwax buildup, a common problem for people with hearing aids. You can easily remove debris with a wax removal brush to avoid buildup. This soft-bristled brush gently clears away wax, dirt, or skin particles from your hearing aid surface. Don’t apply too much pressure when using the wax brush, as it will push the earwax buildup further into your hearing aid.

Did You Know: The accumulation of wax on your hearing aids can disrupt the sound by creating whistling or squeaking feedback.2

Dry cloth: While it may be tempting to use a damp cloth to clean hearing aids, any wetness can cause damage. Use a dry cloth to wipe down the hearing aid’s exterior. It’s important to use a non-abrasive cloth to avoid scratches.

Pro Tip: Microfiber cloths, like the ones used for cleaning glasses, are an excellent choice for cleaning your hearing aids.

Wax pick: A wax pick or loop removes wax from small openings on your hearing aid. Avoid inserting the pick into the microphone portion.

Tube cleaner: Wax and other debris can become trapped in the tube portion of your hearing aid. Tube cleaners are long, thin brushes that allow you to clean this hard-to-reach area carefully.

Can You Use Alcohol To Clean Hearing Aids

  • Start with freshly washed, dry hands
  • Use a clean, dry lint-free cloth
  • Work in an area with good lighting
  • Wipe away from openings for the microphone and speaker

Dont:

  • Spray any liquids on the hearing aid, such as water or cleaning fluids
  • Use a damp or wet cloth
  • Immerse the hearing aid in water

Keep in mind that maintaining good ear hygiene is an important part of hearing aid maintenance, so be sure to keep the ears clean and free of excess wax.

Cleaning Bte And Thin Tube Hearing Aids

BTE and thin tube hearing aids dont usually have a wax filter, but they can get wax trapped in the tube. If you see wax trapped in the tube, remove the dome at the end of the hearing aids. If you have a mold, you should be ok to keep it on. Unscrew the tube from the body of the aid, then run the tube pipe cleaner or cleaning floss through it. Its important to remove the tube because if you just thread the cleaning line up into the tube while its still attached, you could push the wax into the hearing aids. The outside of molds can be cleaned with a cloth or hearing aid safe wipes or spray. After you clean the mics off with a brush, screw the tube back on the aid. The tube doesnt need to be removed and cleaned daily, but its a good idea to check it each night when you put it away.

Careful Cleaning: Always clean your aids one at a time so you dont put the wrong tube and mold back on the aid.

When To Get Your Hearing Aids Cleaned By A Professional

You should have your hearing aid cleaned by a professional every three, six, or twelve months, depending on your model and specific needs. For example, if you have ITE hearing aids and produce excessive wax, youll probably need to get your devices professionally cleaned more often than someone with BTE hearing aids who produces less wax.

Hearing professionals remove wax from more delicate and hard-to-reach areas with a special vacuum. They will also carefully clean your microphones, vents, and receivers. Establish a consistent cleaning schedule with your hearing care provider.

How To Clean In

When cleaning an ITE model, follow these steps:

  • Focus your cleaning on the openings in the device including the microphone ports using a soft-bristle toothbrush or a brush provided by your audiologist to clear away built-up wax. Hold the device with the opening you are cleaning facing downward so any loose particles will fall out of the hearing aid instead of staying lodged inside.

  • Finish by wiping the entire device with a clean, dry cloth or tissue. This will remove debris from the case of the hearing aid.

A Simple Guide To Cleaning Your Hearing Aids

03/27/2020 | Hearing Aids, Patient Resources |

Hearing aids represent a significant investment, so making sure that they stay in optimal working order requires proper maintenance and cleaning. As an audiologist, my focus is on ensuring that my patients are getting the most out of their hearing aids. As a part of that commitment, I invest effort into education about how to care for your hearing aids. Here is a simple guide to cleaning your hearing aids, which should help them function as designed.

How To Properly Clean And Care For Your Behind

The removed earpiece should be cleaned daily .

While cleaning, carefully check the opening of the earpiece. It should not be blocked because the sound from the hearing aid will become distorted or will not be heard at all. Clean the earpiece thoroughly at least once a week. Ask your hearing care professional about the Phonak Cleaning and Care Line products.

Consult with your hearing care professional if:

  • You experience discomfort or pain despite correct placement of the earpiece.
  • Earwax can no longer be removed from the earpiece opening.
  • The earpiece tube is yellow and brittle.
  • You can no longer adjust to the desired volume because the hearing aid starts to whistle.

Important for Behind-the-Ear hearing aids

Always separate the earpiece from the hearing aid before cleaning it. The hearing aid should never come into contact with water! When you connect the earpiece to your hearing aid, it has to be absolutely dry. It is best to dry the tube with a puff of air using an air puffer . You can get this inexpensive accessory from your hearing care professional. Alternatively, shake the drops of water out of the tube where possible and leave the tube to dry on a clean cloth overnight. Re-attach the tube and hearing aid in the morning.

How To Clean Your Hearing Aid Domes

Handy Tips for Cleaning Hearing Aids

Domes are an alternative for ear moulds, and can be used with slim tube behind-the-ear or receiver-in-canal styled hearing aids.

The biggest difference between domes and ear moulds is that unlike ear moulds that require an impression and are rarely replaced, domes come in a variety of pre-made shapes and sizes, and require replacement.

What does this mean in terms of cleaning hearing aid domes? You do not have to! When your hearing aid domes requires cleaning, you simply need to remove the dirty dome, and replace it with a new one. How often you need to do it will depend on what your audiologist tells you, but it may be at least once a month.

This can be done by pulling off your dome from the tubing. However, be careful to not pull on the tubing of the hearing aid when removing your dome. To put on a new one, click it back onto the tubing.

Regardless of how often you do the cleaning yourself, it is important to make appointments with your audiologist for checks and deep cleaning in places that you have missed or have been to unsure to do yourself, such as the wax filter. Do not feel pressured to clean parts of the hearing aid that you are afraid of damaging, it is best to visit your audiologist than to damage your hearing aid and pay for repairs.

Hearing Aid Cleaning: Weekly Routine

In addition to the daily cleaning routine, we also recommend a weekly cleaning where you can spend a little more time removing wax and dirt build-up.

Weekly Cleaning Steps:

  • Using a wax pick/wire loop, gently remove any wax or dirt deposits that your daily cleaning hasnt removed. Be careful no to use the wax pick/wire loop around the microphone or any receiver ports.
  • Using the wax removal brush, gently clean the microphone cover, the ports, and any openings. Turn the hearing aid upside down when doing this so that any dirt that gets dislodged while cleaning falls out .
  • If you have a hearing aid with a wax guard, now is a good time to check and see if it needs to be replaced.
  • Following this weekly routine ensures your hearing aid is performing the way it is intended to.
  • How To Put In Hearing Aids

With hearing aids, red always means right, and blue always means left. Your hearing aids should have red and blue markers on them, most often in the battery door, on the body, or on the molds.

Practice inserting your hearing aids in front of a mirror at first. It might take a few days for it to become second nature. For an in-the-ear aid, they should be comfortable and fit securely because it is molded to your ear. You should feel it slide into the right place.

For hearing aids with a behind-the-ear component, you can start by placing this part at the very top of your ear. The tube or wire should run down the side of your face, right in front of your ear. Once you place the dome or mold end in your ear, the tube or wire should be snug, with no gaps between your face and the aid.

    Step : Clean The Tubing

Gather the clear tubing that you just removed, the cleaning wire tool, and your microfiber cloth. Insert the wire into the triangular end of the tubing that connects to the hearing aid body, and thread it through until the wire pops out of the tip at the other end.

Its very important to start threading at the base of the tubing first because the tip that inserts into your ear is where all the wax and blockage will be. You want to push the wax out of the tip, not push it deeper into the tube.

After threading the wire through the tube and out of the tip, use the microfiber cloth or tissue to clean off any debris on the end of the wire. Finally, pull the wire back out of the tubing. Repeat this process several times to make sure the tubing is completely clean. Always remember to wipe off the end of the wire before pulling it back out of the tube.
