Causes Of Earwax Buildup
Some people are prone to produce too much earwax. Still, excess wax doesnt automatically lead to blockage. In fact, the most common cause of earwax blockage is at-home removal. Using cotton swabs, bobby pins, or other objects in your ear canal can also push wax deeper, creating a blockage.
Youre also more likely to have wax buildup if you frequently use earphones. They can inadvertently prevent earwax from coming out of the ear canals and cause blockages.
The appearance of earwax varies from light yellow to dark brown. Darker colors dont necessarily indicate that theres a blockage.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of The Various Approaches
Most of the studies looking at the side effects of ear drops found that they either had no side effects, or that side effects were rare. These side effects mainly included itching, dizziness, skin irritations, and inflammation of the outer ear canal.
The outer ear canal can also become inflamed after earwax has been removed with cotton buds or sharp objects. Removing earwax also removes the natural protective barrier in the ear canal.
Ear irrigation rarely leads to side effects, as long as it is done by a doctor.

What You Can Do
First of all, do make an appointment with your childs ear, nose, and throat doctor. Waxy buildup may be indicative of other problems, or may be easily mistaken for outer ear infection otitis externa. Treatment with prescription ear drops may be needed. In any case, do not try to self diagnose your child at home.
The ENT doctor will likely manage your childs ears under the microscope. If there is tenacious wax down deep in the ear canal, the doctor may have to carefully remove it out manually. This process is uncomfortable and sometimes painful, depending on the degree of infection. So be prepared to hold your childs hand and to give them a big hug when it is over.

A group of Taiwanese doctors tried to understand the relationship between GERD and chronic rhinosinusitis. Chronic rhinosinusitis is caused by inflammation in the sinus. This interferes with a patients ability to breathe and perceive smell and even taste.

How Can I Treat Myself If I Think I Have An Ear Infection
There are two main treatments for ear infections. Both involve antibiotics. Antibiotics kill the bacteria that are causing the infection.
They work best if taken early in the course of the infection. However, its important to remember that antibiotics wont cure an ear infection.
They only stop the bacteria from growing and spreading further into the body. Once you finish taking antibiotics, the infection will return unless you keep using other methods to treat it.
Preventing An Earwax Build

Sinus Infections And Other Health Effects
Aside from ear pain and dizziness, a sinus infection can also cause temporary hearing loss. Sinus-related hearing loss occurs when the infection spreads to the ears, specifically the middle ear. Hearing can become affected if inflammation puts pressure on the ear drum. This inflammation can cause discharge of fluid and the build-up of fluid in the eardrum, which leads to pain and temporary hearing loss.
When the fluid and pressure are relieved the hearing loss will reverse, and you can go back to hearing how you previously did, prior to the infection. If the fluid does not drain commonly seen in children the continuous pressure can cause the eardrum to burst, which contributes to permanent hearing loss.

How To Remove Earwax At Home
There is no reason to ever insert anything into the ears to remove earwax. Earwax is only formed in the outer third of the ear canal. Using things like bobby pins or cotton-tipped applicators to clean out the earwax can actually push in the earwax, resulting in an impaction of earwax.

Can An Ear Infection Cause A Fever
Acute otitis media, or ear infection, is a sudden infection in the middle ear . While anyone can get an ear infection, theyre extremely common in babies and young children because their eustachian tubes are smaller and more horizontal than an adult. The horizontal positioning of these tubes not only makes it more difficult for fluid to drain out of the ear but also makes it easier for bacteria to travel from the nose into the middle ear.
The positioning of these tubes combined with an underdeveloped immune system are the primary reasons why young children have a higher risk of developing ear infections in addition to the common cold.
