You can Prevent Ear Wax Buildups.

Impacted Earwax Buildup: How To Remove

Even though earwax has its benefits, blockages can cause conductive hearing loss. If you develop a sensation of stuffiness in your ears and suspect earwax is the culprit:

  • Buy an over-the-counter ear cleaning kit if your ears are healthy. Ask a doctor for help if you have ear tubes or if you have any ear pain. Earwax buildup is not painful.
  • Regularly clean your hearing aids or any other devices you put in your ears.
  • Do not clean ears with a cotton swab, hairpin or any sharp instrument in an attempt to remove wax yourself. This can push the wax deeper into the ear canal where it is unable to be sloughed off naturally, or you could even puncture your eardrum.
  • Do not try ear candling. Besides having no proven benefits, ear candling can cause burns, wax blockage, punctured eardrums and serious injury. Instead, follow general rules for keeping ears clean .

Use A Saline Solution

Sometimes a little bit of salinity in the water helps to remove earwax. Its best to make your own solution instead of the bottled saline. Completely dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a half-cup of warm water. Soak a cotton ball in the saline solution, tilt your head and then use the saturated cotton to drip the salt water into your ear. Allow the water to stay in your ear for a few minutes, then tilt in the opposite direction to drain out the saline. Do this for each ear.

What Causes Excessive Earwax

Typically the body removes earwax and dead skin through the action of chewing or talking. Jaw movement causes the earwax to move from your inner ear towards your outer ear.

About 12 million people get treated for excess earwax every year in the United States. Children and older adults are most at risk for earwax blockage, known as impaction. Reasons for earwax buildup include:

  • Trapped earwax and dead skin: Can be the result of the normal aging process can also be caused by harmful earwax removal methods
  • Narrow ear shape: Can be affected by the shape of an individual’s ear, scar tissue from multiple and/or severe ear infections, or increased amounts of hair in the ear canal
  • Overproduction:Can be the result of trauma, trapped water, and other unknown causes

When Is Irrigation Not Suitable

Ear irrigation is not suitable for everyone in all circumstances. The procedure may be unsuitable if any of the following factors apply:

  • The person has had ear surgery in the last 12 months.
  • A child has a tympanostomy tube, also called a grommet, which is a small tube that doctors insert to allow ventilation of the middle ear.
  • Another foreign body is blocking the ear canal.
  • The person was born with a cleft palate.
  • The individual has a perforated eardrum or has had one in the last 12 months.
  • The person has or has recently had otitis media, which is an infection of the middle ear.
  • There is a mucous discharge from the ear, which could indicate an undiagnosed perforation.

Anyone who has had any problems, such as severe vertigo or pain, following previous irrigation should not undergo this procedure again.

Thankfully, there are many highly effective over-the-counter medications available to help remove the sinus congestion.

Pain relievers help reduce the pain caused by the increased pressure in the sinuses. Aspirin, acetaminophen , Aleve , and Advil or Motrin are effective pain relievers. Nasal irrigation can also be used to relieve the congestion in the sinuses.

Oral decongestants can give better relief than nasal sprays but a few side effects may result. Mucus thinner that improves sinus drainage is called a mucolytic and is often prescribed along with cough suppressants. Guaifenesin is a mucolytic that is commonly used for sinusitis.

Always follow the instructions on the label if you are using OTC medications. Make sure you consume the recommended dose for the recommended duration based on your age and weight. Steroid sprays should not be used for a longer period than that mentioned on the label. Excessive use can cause the mucous membranes to swell more than before.

If symptoms persist for more than 10 days and breathing becomes difficult, the infection may be due to bacteria and you may need to consult a doctor for further treatment. Antibiotics such as amoxicillin may be recommended. Surgery is the last resort for people suffering from chronic sinusitis and is done to improve the drainage in the sinuses.

Am I At Greater Risk Of Excess Earwax

Some people have an increased chance of experiencing earwax issues. This usually stems from an underlying medical problem, such as trauma or disease affecting the ear.

Bony growths and narrow ear canals are both known to restrict the passage of earwax and increase the chances of hardening and blockage. Skin problems or more systemic diseases affect both secretion in the ear and the amount of dead skin that needs to be cleared by the body.

Its also worth remembering that regularly using things like earphones and hearing aids will naturally push against the wax and can increase the risk of a problematic build-up.

What Is The Treatment For Impacted Ear Wax

For impacted ear wax that causes no symptoms, treatment is not always needed. Ear wax may go away on its own over time.

If you have symptoms of impacted earwax, treatment includes:

  • Ear drops
  • Rinsing
  • Special tools used by a medical professional to remove ear wax including small sticks, hooks, and spoons and tools that use suction to pull the wax out

Do NOT:

  • Clean your ears yourself using a cotton swab
  • This can push wax deeper into the ears and cause impaction or make it worse
  • Use ear candling, which involves lighting one end of a hollow candle and putting the other end in the ear
  • This method does not work and can cause ear injury and burns
  • Severe Complications With Eustachian Tubes

Eustachian tubes are canals connecting the middle ear to the nasopharynx or the part of the ear that contains the back of the nasal cavity and upper throat. It is responsible for controlling pressure within the middle ear, making it similar to the pressure felt outside the body. The eustachian tubes remain closed most of the time and only open during chewing, yawning, or swallowing to let air through the passageway. When the tubes do not open the way they should, it can create feelings of pressure, discomfort, dizziness, or ringing in the ear.

How Can Ear Wax Impact Hearing

If too much ear wax builds up, it can block the ear canal and prevent sound waves from passing through to the inner ear from the outer ear. The result is conductive hearing lossthe name for hearing loss caused by issues within the ear canal, ear drum or middle ear. Ear blockage from wax is one of the leading causes of conductive hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss can make softer sounds more difficult to hear and make louder sounds more muffled. This type of hearing loss can often be temporaryfor example, if impacted ear wax is the culprit, it can be removed in a safe and timely manner to reverse the hearing loss. However, if impacted ear wax is left untreated in the canal for too long, it can potentially lead to more permanent hearing loss. Researchers have found that mice exposed to conductive hearing loss over the course of a year experienced lasting damage to the inner ear. It is important to recognize and remove impacted ear wax before it has a chance to cause irreversible damage to your hearing health.

Impacted Ear Wax Removal At Home

Most cases of ear wax blockage can be treated at home. If your eardrum doesnt contain a tube or have a hole in it, these self-care measures may help you remove excess earwax thats blocking your ear canal:

The following remedies can be used to soften wax in the ear:

    • Baby oil
    • Mineral oil
    • Water

Use an eyedropper to apply a few drops of baby oil, mineral oil, glycerin or hydrogen peroxide in your ear canal.

After a day or two, when the wax is softened, use a rubber-bulb syringe to gently squirt warm water into your ear canal. Tilt your head and pull your outer ear up and back to straighten your ear canal. When finished irrigating, tip your head to the side to let the water drain out. When finished, gently dry your outer ear with a towel or hand-held dryer.

Another method is to wash out the wax.

    • Use body-temperature water .
    • Hold your head upright and straighten the ear canal by holding the outside ear and gently pulling upward.
    • Use a syringe to gently direct a small stream of water against the ear canal wall next to the wax plug.
    • Tip your head to allow the water to drain. You may need to repeat irrigation several times.

Dry your ear canal. When finished, gently dry your outer ear with a towel or hand-held dryer.

To avoid damaging your ear or causing an infection:

    • Never irrigate or use drops to soften the wax in the ear if the eardrum may have a hole in it or you have had recent ear surgery.
    • Do not irrigate the ear with a jet irrigator designed for cleaning teeth .

Why Does Ear Wax Build Up In The Ear

The body will produce as much ear wax as it needs, but sometimes it can produce too much, causing buildup and blockage. Several factors can influence ear wax production, including diet, stress, and hygiene. Studies have shown that consuming omega 3 fatty acids reduces the chance of ear wax buildup. If you are prone to picking out wax with a cotton swab , stop, drop, and take note. Regularly removing ear wax triggers the body to produce even more wax, which can result in excessive ear wax. Too much ear wax in the ear canal can harden and dry up over time, increasing the risk of it becoming impacted. Impacted ear wax can cause a host of issues, including infections, earacheseven hearing loss.

    How To Treat Earwax Buildup

When Ear Wax Is Dark Ears Ringing Symptom

It is very tempting to try to treat earwax buildup at home, but we offer a word of caution. Please dont attempt home remedies for earwax removal. The best way to ensure the safety of your ears is to allow a Specialist from South Florida ENT Associates to examine your earwax buildup and determine the best course of treatment.

Most people do not need to see a medical professional frequently for the treatment of excessive earwax buildup. A once-a-year cleaning at your doctors office should be sufficient to maintain ear health and the appropriate balance of wax in your ears. If you do frequently experience earwax buildup, it is important to be examined by a medical professional to ensure that there isnt an underlying condition that needs to be diagnosed and treated.
