Deaf Americans Are Urging The White House To Use Sign Language Interpreters At Coronavirus Briefings
The US Census Bureau estimates that about 11.5 million Americans have some degree of hearing loss. Yet months into the coronavirus pandemic, the White House still does not have American Sign Language interpreters at its televised public health press briefings.
What Research Does The Nidcd Support On Asl And Other Sign Languages
The NIDCD supports research on ASL, including its acquisition and characterization. Funded research includes studies to understand sign languages grammar, acquisition, and development, and use of sign language when spoken language access is compromised by trauma or degenerative disease, or when speech is difficult to acquire due to early hearing loss or injury to the nervous system.

Study of sign language can also help scientists understand the neurobiology of language development. In one study, researchers reported that the building of complex phrases, whether signed or spoken, engaged the same brain areas. Better understanding of the neurobiology of language could provide a translational foundation for treating injury to the language system, for employing signs or gestures in therapy for children or adults, and for diagnosing language impairment in individuals who are deaf.
The NIDCD is also funding research on sign languages created among small communities of people with little to no outside influence. Emerging sign languages can be used to model the essential elements and organization of natural language and to learn about the complex interplay between natural human language abilities, language environment, and language learning outcomes. Learn how to sign house in ASL a house is a home when family is there!
1. Start with your fingers all pressed together, palms flat. Touch the sides of thumbs and pointer fingers together to make an upside-down V-shape.2. Draw the hands out so they are now a couple of inches a part. This is the roof of the house.3. Next draw the hands straight down so the palms are facing one another and spaced a few inches apart. Teaching Tips:
- Play in early childhood education is key to developmental learning. Provide materials for children to play house with. Kitchen supplies, costumes, little beds and dolls, etc. all provide great starting points. Encourage your child to talk about what they are doing in the playhouse as they go, and practice the sign for house!
- Choose a favorite toy or stuffed animal and create a house for them to live in! What kinds of things will your childs pal need to be comfortable in a house? Have your child help brainstorm and collect the materials, and then let him get as creative as he wants.

Best Strategies For Learning Asl
Because ASL is essentially visual and very interactive, the best way of learning it is not by studying movement charts, but by actually using it in conversations with other people. There are many aspects of the language that can be easily communicated visually – if you tried the same by means of a written instruction, it would take ages to arrive at correct gestures.
When learning ASL, it’s best to first focus on a certain group of signs, perfect them in conversations and then move on to another group of signs. Trying to learn many signs at once will be too difficult in the context of this spatio-visual language. Try to participate in sign conversations and follow them closely, showing that you’re actively listening to and seeing what other signer communicates – nod and respond with ‘really’ or ‘huh’.
Learners of ASL should remember to always look at signers in their totality – body language, hands, facial expressions are all important components of communication. After a period of observation, you’ll be able to instantly tell whether the person is asking a question or expressing an indicative phrase.
Not Actually 100% Sign Language
The first thing to note is that it is not actually all in the hands. People presume that sign language is just a more complex form of the game charades. The sign for house looks like a house, therefore every word looks in some way like what it describes, right?
The problem with this is that you can’t sign concepts like if, since and so on so easily. But conventions mean that signs for these words do of course exist. You learn them and then you’ll recognise and be able to use them, even if the reason they look they way they do may not be so apparent at first.
What I found much more interesting was discovering that a vast amount of sign language is not actually in how you shape or move your hands. There are several other factors at play, a few of which include:
You quickly learn that you should actually have most of your focus on the person’s FACE as they are signing. Of course their hands are crucial, but facial expressions introduce both important sense to a conversation and actually dramatically affect the end-meaning.
- Eyebrows: Raised eyebrows are used for Yes/No questions and when talking about something positive. When you furrow your brow this indicates you are asking a WH- question or perhaps talking about something negative.
With this in mind, the sign is the same for Here and What. But you must furrow your brow when it’s the latter .
There are even other ways you can express yourself using various facial muscles and even your tongue!

Word Order And Word Formation
Word order in ASL can be tricky. When asking one of those WH-questions, for instance ‘What is your name?’, in ASL you’ll need to move the word to the very end of the sentence and say something like this: ‘Your name what?’.
Some people try to sign word for word in English, but this approach is based on the popular misconception that ASL is based on English. Many aspects of ASL differ form English language like its grammar or syntax, so translating what you say in English word by word into ASL isn’t a good approach. It basically sounds as if you were going for a word-by-word translation of English into German.
When it comes to word formation, ASL offers several smart techniques for creating words. A person doing a specific work can be formed by adding a suffix ‘-er’ to the sign signifying the activity, for instance writer is composed of two signs: a sign for ‘write’ and a sign for ‘-er’.
Not every word has a sign attached to it and many of them might not be known to all users of ASL – and that’s where finger-spelling comes in. Some people claim that finger-spelling is more common in ASL than in any other sign language – the vast majority of signers would be able to spell a word very fast if you asked them to.
About 10% of ASL is made up of alphabet and singers usually use letters to spell names of people, titles of books or movies, name brands, as well as names of cities or countries.

On Saturday I went to the Deaf Night Out here in Austin, where almost everyone were deaf or hard-of-hearing. After about just 2-3 weeks of part-time work on American Sign Language , I was able to participate in conversations with several people about many topics and even joke, all without ever speaking.
This has definitely been a successful mission!
ASL has quickly become my favourite language and I look forward to spending another month in the states later this year to continue working on it .
Although I’ve still got a lot to learn, I thought you might find an overview of the language interesting based on talking to people about this mission and my own preconceptions, I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about how ASL works!
I learned everything here from actual interaction with deaf people and not from books.

Why Emphasize Early Language Learning
Parents should expose a deaf or hard-of-hearing child to language as soon as possible. The earlier a child is exposed to and begins to acquire language, the better that childs language, cognitive, and social development will become. Research suggests that the first few years of life are the most crucial to a childs development of language skills, and even the early months of life can be important for establishing successful communication with caregivers. Thanks to screening programs in place at almost all hospitals in the United States and its territories, newborn babies are tested for hearing before they leave the hospital. If a baby has hearing loss, this screening gives parents an opportunity to learn about communication options. Parents can then start their childs language learning process during this important early stage of development.
How Do Most Children Learn Asl
Parents are often the source of a childs early acquisition of language, but for children who are deaf, additional people may be models for language acquisition. A deaf child born to parents who are deaf and who already use ASL will begin to acquire ASL as naturally as a hearing child picks up spoken language from hearing parents. However, for a deaf child with hearing parents who have no prior experience with ASL, language may be acquired differently. In fact, 9 out of 10 children who are born deaf are born to parents who hear. Some hearing parents choose to introduce sign language to their deaf children. Hearing parents who choose to have their child learn sign language often learn it along with their child. Children who are deaf and have hearing parents often learn sign language through deaf peers and become fluent.

I’m more convinced than ever that natural social use of languages is the best way to learn any language. No exception

Fact Check: Biden’s Claim About Economic Growth

President Biden said the US economy had its strongest year in nearly four decades in 2021, growing at a rate of 5.7%.
Facts first: That is correct. But it also needs some more context because the economy is still recovering from the devastating impact of the pandemic.
The US economy was strong last year. The nations gross domestic product, the broadest measure of economic activity, increased at a pace of 5.7%, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. That was the fastest growth rate since 1984, when Ronald Reagan was in the White House.
That said, America is also still recovering from the worst of the pandemic. In 2020, GDP contracted as a result of the economy shutting down in response to Covid-19. Last years upswing was still making up for lost ground.
But the economic growth came at a price: inflation has soared, and Americans face higher prices everywhere from food to gasoline to furniture. At the start of 2022, two of the most-watched inflation indicators the Labor Department’s consumer price index and the Commerce Department’s personal consumption expenditure price index increased at the fastest pace since 1982 during the year ending in January.

American Sign Language is a complete, natural language that has the same linguistic properties as spoken languages, with grammar that differs from English. ASL is expressed by movements of the hands and face. It is the primary language of many North Americans who are deaf and hard of hearing and is used by some hearing people as well.
Iowa Governor Encourages President Biden To Put His Faith In The American People
Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Republican from Iowa, said that she encourages President Biden “to put his faith” in the American people.
While delivering the GOP response to the State of the Union address, Reynolds said that Americans “have never wavered” their “belief in this country regardless of who leads it” because “the soul of America isn’t about who lives in the White House.”
“It’s men and women like you in every corner of this nation who are willing to step up and take responsibility for your communities, for your neighbors, and ultimately for yourselves. By that most important measure at least, the state of our union is indeed strong,” she concluded.

White House Briefings Will Now Include An American Sign Language Interpreter
An American Sign Language interpreter will attend every daily White House press briefing, Biden administration press secretary Jen Psaki announced on Monday. The decision, which has already been celebrated by advocates, will make the briefings more accessible to those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Psaki announced the effort at the beginning of Monday’s briefing, saying it’s part of the Biden administration’s accessibility and inclusion efforts. On both Monday and Tuesday, an interpreter appeared on-screen alongside those speaking at the televised briefing.
“The president is committed to building an America that is more inclusive, more just, and more accessible for every American including Americans with disabilities and their families,” Psaki said on Monday.
The National Association of the Deaf called the move a “historic win.”
“There is more work to be done, but this is a great day for inclusion and access for the deaf and hard of hearing community,” the association said in a statement.
The Trump administration did not include ASL interpreters in the majority of its press briefings. In , the administration was ordered by a federal district court to include an ASL interpreter for public briefings that addressed COVID-19, according to The Associated Press.
The Trump administration was also ordered to make an interpreter feed available to all television networks so they could show the interpreter in their live feeds, the AP said.
White House Still Cant Say Where Covid
For me, it would be problematic for someone who has aligned herself with alt-right discourses to be the public face of the White House for the deaf communities and people who are curious about ASL, he added.
A profile of Mewshaw posted at the Independent Interpreters website says she is the child of a deaf adult and has been working as a professional sign language interpreter since 1999.
She is comfortable with working in an array of settings and her strengths are in settings such as Federal and state government, medical, conferences, religious services, and highly-technical assignments, the profile adds.
Mewshaw was replaced by different ASL interpreters on Tuesday and Wednesday. The White House didnt respond to requests for comment from Time or The Post.
Mewshaw didnt answer her phone on Wednesday and didnt immediately return a message from The Post.
