What Is A Classifier

Bad in Baby Sign Language, ASL

A classifier, abbreviated as CL, in sign language is a signed morpheme that represents a group of nouns or referents. The classifier handshape represents the group to which a noun belongs.

In some way, the classifier handshape functions like a pronoun in a clause. Like pronouns, a noun must be signed before its classifier can be used as a referent. But, it goes beyond its pronoun-like function. It is often incorporated with a movement, palm orientation, and/or location to convey rich information in a sentence.

For example, the classifier “horizontal 3-handshape” may represent an object in the group of vehicles such as car, truck, bicycle, motorcycle, submarine, etc.

Classifier is not exclusive to sign language. It is also found in spoken languages that have some grammatical means for the nominal classification systems of noun referents. Though, their properties of classifier system are different from signed languages.

Introducing Classifiers In Sign Language

At first, classifier may sound a bit intimidating for sign language learners. But, I tell my ASL beginners:

1) It’s really fun and 2) If you understand how classifiers work and use them in your arsenal of signing skills, your signing skills would improve by leaps and bounds.

There is no sign language without classifiers. Impossible without them in storytelling. Without using classifiers, your signing skills would remain far below mediocre. So, roll up your sleeves and get ready.

What The Research Says

The good news is that there are no real drawbacks to using signs with your young children. Many parents express concern that signing will delay the expression of verbal communication.

No studies have ever found that to be true, and there are some that suggest the exact opposite effect.

There are studies that suggest the use of sign language doesnt help infants and toddlers acquire verbal language earlier than usual, but even these studies dont show that signing delays the ability to talk.

Have Men Always Sworn More Than Women And If So Why

Definitely not! Historians of the English language describe how women were equally praised for their command of exceedingly expressive insults and swearing, right up to the point in 1673 when a book by Richard Allestree was published titled The Ladies Calling. Allestree says that women who swear are acting in a way that is biologically incompatible with being a woman and, as a result, will begin to take on masculine characteristics, like growing facial hair or becoming infertile. He wrote, There is no sound more odious to the ears of God than an oath in the mouth of a woman.

Today we are horribly still in the same place on men versus women swearing. Although women are still considered to swear less than men, we know from studies that they dont. They swear just as much as men. But attitudinal surveys show that both men and women tend to judge womens swearing much more harshly. And that judgement can have serious implications. For example, when women with breast cancer or arthritis swear as a result of their condition, theyre much more likely to lose friends, particularly female friends. Whereas men who swear about conditions like testicular cancer tend to bond more closely with other men using the same vocabulary. The idea that swearing is a legitimate means of expressing a negative emotion is much more circumscribed for women.

When did you learn bad words in sign language for the first time?

Nancy said:Today at lunch, one of the workers there said a bad word while talking about I guess her homelife . I missed that one , but then she said another bad word that I actually caught her saying it . I told her “I got that one!”, and one of the ladies started laughing. I told her that I know bad words in sign language. LOL I first learned the bad words in sign from my deaf/HOH classmates in high school . From them, I learned the signs for “F—“, “Sh–“, “Fart”. When I was 16 in 1987, I saw the movie “Children of a Lesser God” and Marlee Matlin was using the “F” word in sign which I already knew at the time. When I got older , I learned from another person what B.S. is in sign language. LOL You see, I grew up with a severe hearing loss since age 2 years old, so I was mostly oral in school and other places. I first learned sign at age 14 or 15….I learned that my old deaf high school teacher didn’t learn sign until in college! When did you learn bad words in sign language for the first time?

loveofwine said:I’ve had several people coming up to me, asking how to sign bad words, it excites them. The thrill of knowing different ways to express cuss words. *rolling my eyes* I don’t mind but sometimes it gets tiring when it’s all they want to know not the real language.

How To Teach Sign Language To Infants And Toddlers

So how do parents teach these signs to their children, and which signs do they teach? There are several ways to teach babies how to sign.

One way thats been described is to follow these rules:

  • Start at a young age, like 6 months. If your child is older, dont worry, as any age is appropriate to start signing.
  • Try to keep sessions teaching sign language short, about 5 minutes each.
  • First, perform the sign and say the word. For example, say the word more and perform the sign.
  • If your baby performs the sign, then reward them with some sort of positive reinforcement, like a toy. Or if the session occurs during mealtime, a bite of food.
  • If they dont perform the sign within 5 seconds, then gently guide their hands to perform the sign.
  • Every time they perform the sign, give the reward. And repeat the sign yourself to reinforce it.
  • Repeating this process for three sessions each day will quickly result in your child learning basic signs.

For more detailed information, there are websites with books and videos that offer instruction for parents, but theres usually a fee.

One website, Baby Signs Too, was started by the researchers who published the groundbreaking studies on infant and toddler sign language. Another similar website is Baby Sign Language.

Each of these websites has dictionaries of signs for words and phrases to use for infants and toddlers. Some basic signs can be found below:

You Write Ive Had A Certain Pride In My Knack For Colorful And Well

My first memory of being punished for swearing was calling my little brother a four-letter word, twat, which I thought was just an odd pronunciation of the word twit. I must have been about eight at the time my brother was still pre-school. My mother froze, then belted me round the ear. That made me realize that some words had considerably more power than others, and that the mere shift in a vowel was enough to completely change the emotional impact of a word.

Ive always had a curiosity about things Ive been told I am not meant to be interested in, which is why I wound up in a fairly male-dominated field of artificial intelligence for my career. Theres a certain cussedness to my personality that means, as soon as someone says, No, thats not for you, I absolutely have to know about it.

My relationship with swearing is definitely one example. I tend to use it as a way of marking myself out as being more like my male colleagues, like having a working knowledge of the offside rule in soccer. Its a good way of making sure that Im not seen as this weird, other person, based on my gender.

Many apps and platforms are joining the mission to educate and encourage positive behaviors in the digital realm. The Messenger Kids Pledge echoes the attitudes we want our kids to exhibit in real life: Be Kind, Be Respectful, Be Safe, and Have Fun. You Control The World They Play In

There arent many phrases scarier for a parent than in-app purchases available. Thankfully, you can add layers of purchasing restrictions to make sure your kid doesnt convert your life savings into video game currency.

Once you have your pocketbook protected, most apps and services also have filters you can apply to serve up only age-appropriate content. Video platforms get better every day at creating a digital world with training wheels for pre-teens. Most games restrict chat functions for younger kids so you dont have to worry about strangers trying to make small talk with your second grader who simply wants to feed a pretend horse in an open-world environment.

Most importantly, keeping kids aware of your screen time rules and enforcing them will go a long way to keeping their digital habit a healthy one.

The Evolution Of Auslan

In the 19th century, British, Irish and Scottish people who were deaf migrated to Australia and brought their sign languages with them. Over time, an Australian sign language developed its own unique characteristics. Like any other living language, Auslan continues to evolve over time to meet the communication needs of people who are deaf.Just as people who can hear speak different languages in different countries, people who are deaf around the world also use different sign languages, such as:

  • American Sign Language
  • French Sign Language

and many more. Sign language is influenced by the culture, language and traditions of each country, as are many spoken languages. International Sign is a language that many deaf people learn in order to communicate more effectively with each other, especially at international events such as congresses or the Deaflympic Games. Due to historical influences, Auslan is more like BSL than ASL.
