Language Development Without A Language Model

The previous sections focused on deaf children born into deaf, signing families. However, deaf children of deaf parents may constitute only 4% of the deaf population in the United States . Instead, the vast majority of deaf children are born to hearing parents. In the past, deaf children of hearing parents typically received very limited linguistic input in infancy indeed, even in the early 1990s, their hearing loss was often not identified until an average age of about 2-1/2 , although this has changed with the advent of neonatal hearing testing. When childrens deafness was recognized, their parents were often discouraged from signing or gesturing to them. Moreover, whatever speech training such a child received may have been ineffective. What would children do in such a situation? Did they have any systematic means to communicate?

Figure 5. A gestural sentence produced by David , a home signer. David was holding a toy in his hand as he gestured. Here David produces the string that eat you . This utterance exemplifies Davids reliable tendency to order patient gestures before act gestures. This illustration is based on video made available to RPM by Susan Goldin-Meadow.

My Name Is In Sign Language

Learn how to sign the phrase my name is. Its a useful expression to know when practicing good manners!

1. This is a two part sign. First you sign the word my simply by placing one flat hand on the middle of your chest.2. Now you will sign name. On each separate hand, press the pointer and middle fingers together and tuck the remaining fingers into your palm.3. Next tap the extended fingers on each hand one on top of the other so that they form an x-shape. This is name.4. Notice there is no sign for the word is. This word is not often signed in ASL as it is implied.5. Because youre making and x with the fingers on your two hands, think about how you sign your name on the x! Use this visual to help you remember the sign.

Teaching Tips:

  • Encourage your child to introduce herself to new acquaintances by signing, My name is _____. If she is shy, this is especially helpful because she doesnt have to voice the phrase at first if she doesnt want to, but she still practices being polite.
  • Learning games for Kindergarten can help children get to know one another in a new group. Pair kids off the first time they meet and encourage them to introduce themselves using the phrase, My name is. Add on to this activity by having each child tell one interesting thing about himself, such as, My name is ______ and I like to _______! Return to the circle and have the partners introduce their new friend.

Variables Of Analysis: Social Factors

Of the 6722 tokens analysed, 5279 were classified as traditional for the signer’s region. Participant and lexical item were included in the analysis as random effects. Table 2 presents the results, including the log odds, number of tokens analysed, percentage of traditional variants and the centred weight for each factor . Results with a positive log-odd and a factor weight over 0.5 indicate that this factor results in an increased likelihood that the traditional variants will be used while a negative log-odd and a factor weight below 0.5 indicate an increased likelihood that non-traditional variants will be found in the data.

    Communicative Resources For Numerical

This section focuses on the range of expression of numerical-quantitative concepts found across all participants, including a variety of constructions involving numeral signs which occur in the data when talking about topics such as dates, time periods, age, fractions, money and currencies, schooling and educational systems, family constellations, and the like. The focus is deliberately on a particular subset of quantification, where numerals are part of the construction in one way or another , but excludes instances of quantification where the construction includes a quantifier . This provides a coherent, narrowly circumscribed domain, which is preferable given the complexity of the interactions.

During the analysis process, a number of structures were identified that the signers used to express numerals. The categories used for ELAN coding are organised hierarchically as seen in Figure 2, and examples of each category are given below. All examples are from the data, and the video file name and time code is noted in each case.

    Different Flavors Of Sign Language

It’s important to understand that sign language comes in multiple styles, much like unique dialects in a spoken language. What you sign with one person may be different than the way another person signs, and this can be confusing at times.

For instance, some people sign “true American Sign Language,” which is a language that has its own grammar and syntax. Others use signed exact English , a form that mimics the English language as closely as possible. Still others use a form of sign language that combines English with ASL, known as pidgin signed English .

Sign language is also used differently in education. Some schools may follow a philosophy known as total communication and use all means possible to communicate, not just sign language. Others believe in using sign language to teach children English, an approach known as bilingual-bicultural .
