Im a big fan of the chest slap. As far as pottying goes, we didnt have much call to be understood beyond a small circle of friends and family, so we had no need to stick with a major language. Far better to choose a sign that fit our needs perfectly , used one hand, and made a noise). You need to be consistent in your signing, so you might as well start out with a sign that works really well for tiny children.
When To Start Signing With Your Baby
Four to six months is the ideal time to begin signing with your baby. At some point between six and 12 months, usually around the nine-month point, infants hit a developmental period for gestures.
This is the point when you will likely see your baby sign for the first time if you have introduced baby signs a couple of months preceding.
It is completely fine to start signing later when your baby is already gesturing. Regardless of when you begin, be ready to sign consistently for some time before your baby picks it up.
There is no harm in beginning earlier than four months. You can start as early as youd like. Some parents find that signing from the start helps them develop the habit. This is important because both consistency and patience are key in teaching your baby to sign.

When To Start Signing For Potty TrainingAt least three months before you plan to begin potty training, start using the signs for wet and dry, pee and poo, diaper and potty. Use the signs for wet and dry when bathing or washing and drying hands. This will help when it comes to showing your toddler the difference between a wet diaper and a dry one, so he can understand when he has done a pee. Eventually he will understand enough to be able to tell you or sign to you that he has a wet diaper.

Baby Signs To Teach Your Little One
Babies start collecting info about sounds and words from the get-go, but it takes a really long time for them to actually learn how to talk. Talking is hard work! Your babys lips, tongue, and throat need to figure out how to move together with perfect split-second teamwork in order to form words. In fact, it takes most kids two to three years to get really good at speaking. But that doesnt mean you need to wait that long to communicate with your little one! A great way to jump-start your childs ability to talk is to teach them how to sign.
You can begin signing to your baby whenever you like, just know that your precious bub wont have the skill set to sign back until theyre at least 6 months old. But that doesnt mean they dont understand you! By the time your baby is one, their right brain will be an expert at reading gestures. That means if youre not already signing by your tots first birthday, its a great time to start. Heck, your baby may have started without you! For instance, some young toddlers will do something like raise their hands whenever they want to leave. Tuned-in parents can copy-cat that cue and tell their tot its time to go with the same signal. Here, some tips, tricks, and signs to help kick start your baby sign language journey.
How To Use Sign Language When Potty Training Your Toddler
The key to using baby sign language when you potty train is consistency. Begin by using the sign for âpottyâ every time you change your babyâs diaper. When you use the sign, also say the word aloud so that your child makes the association between the sign, the contents of their diaper, and the word. Encourage your child to make the sign back to you.
Use the sign every time you enter a bathroom together to reinforce the meaning. When your child is ready to potty train, use the signs throughout the process. You can use sign language along with any other potty training method to help your child understand how and when to use the toilet.
As you potty train, your child will be able to sign to you when they feel that itâs potty time. Communicating like this can take a lot of the guesswork and frustration out of potty training.

Which Signs Should I Start With
Although any word that relates to your babys world can be helpful, there are a few that are particularly useful. Functional signs, such as milk and full, are a great starting point, says Steyns. But the fun ones are actually important as well because theyre what your baby will likely be most interested in practising with you, she says. These may include signs like bath, if your little one loves tub time, or dog, if your pooch is already your babys best friend.
Introduce between one and three signs at a time, repeating them often as firm statements and saying and signing the words at the same time. Avoid using the signs as questions because this can confuse your baby, says Steyns.
In addition to practising on your own, it may be worth signing up for an online or in-person course on baby sign language to ensure that youre getting the gestures just right.
Before long , your baby will begin signing back to you. But keep in mind that, as with speech, their early versions of the words in sign language will often be a bit different at first. They may only be decipherable to you in the beginning, but thats OKjust keep trying together.

Yeah!! Hold on a minute, its not usually that quick and easy. However, using signs along with training just might pick up the pace.

First, start using the sign for POTTY , every time you change the diaper. Toddlers love shaking that potty sign at you to tell you theyve already wet. You can also use the potty sign when your toddler follows you into the bathroom and sees you go.

Things To Look Out For Before Starting
Before using baby sign language there are a few things to consider. One important thing to be aware of is that there are many baby sign language languages and they are often quite different from each other. By this I mean that most countries have their own baby sign language and some even have more than one because they follow different standards.
Then its also good to know that baby sign language is not the same as sign language. Baby sign language is used by hearing parents and caregivers to improve communication. Sign language is used by deaf people to communicate. Most countries also have their own sign language.
This means that the first thing you need to do is to choose a language. It doesnt really matter which one you choose but I do recommend using baby sign language and not sign language. The reason for this is that baby sign language has been simplified and is less complicated to learn. If you dont know which one to choose I have a few recommendations further down.

What Are The Signs Of Potty Training
Physical signs of pottytrainingreadiness include staying dry for two or more hours at a time, sticking to a regular pattern of bowel movements, having the ability to get to the potty, and being able to pull pants on and off and sit down on the potty without help. Emotional signs of readiness are important, too.
Are There Any Drawbacks
Many parents wonder if using baby sign language will make their little one a late talker, but the research indicates the opposite may be true.
Learning baby sign language definitely does not delay speech development, in fact, the research indicates that babies exposed to sign language speak earlier and have larger vocabularies, says Rebelo.
A seminal study by doctors Linda Acredolo and Susan Goodwyn, funded by the National Institute of Health, showed that 11-month old babies exposed to sign language had larger vocabularies and understood more words by age two than those in the non-signing group of the study.
So will your baby be signing even when she begins to talk?
Most babies will sign exclusively at first, and then they might overlap speech with the sign and then the sign falls away as speech takes off, says Rebelo. Some babies skip the overlapping stage of signing and talking and will drop signing abruptly as their speech develops, which happens rapidly from about 18 months on for typically developing children.
