There are a few different ways to say goodbye in Portuguese. In this article, I’ll cover everything you need to know.

Learn all the words and expressions below, and you’ll have everything you need to say farewell in Portuguese from formal situations to everyday, casual encounters on the street.

Bye In Portuguese: Tchau

By far the most common way to say bye in Portuguese is tchau. It’s widely used in both Brazil and Portugal.

Tchau comes the Italian word ciao, and is pronounced the same way.

Supposedly, tchau become a popular way to say goodbye in Brazilian Portuguese during the early twentieth century, when large numbers of Italians immigrated into Brazil. Since then, tchau has crossed back across the Atlantic and is also common in Portugal.

However, if you speak Italian, you should be aware of one important difference between tchau and ciao. In Italy, ciao can mean both helloandgoodbye. In Portuguese, tchau can only mean goodbye, never hello. So don’t use it to greet someone!

Tchau is sometimes also written xau, txau, tiao, or chau, especially in text speak and on social networking sites. But tchau is considered to be the correct spelling.

To wish someone to have a good time in Japanese, you can use the expression .

You can use in situations where you to wish someone to have a good time in whatever theyre doing/going to do.

Another phrase to know is vai com Deus or the more formal alternative, vá com Deus which literally means Go with God! It’s kind of like saying goodbye, and bless you! you’re wishing blessings and good fortune to the person you’re talking to.

A similar expression is fica com Deusbe with God. This is something you might say when youâre leaving a place to the people who are staying behind. You’re blessing them and the place they’re in. May God be with them!

How To Say Have A Good Day In Japanese Casually As A Parting

As mentioned earlier, In Japanese, there isnt a way to directly tell someone to Have a good day. Most of the time though, we wish someone to have a good day when we part with them.

In Japanese, instead of saying Have a good day to mean goodbye, people will simply say .

You can use when you want to say See you in Japanese as a farewell, or parting phrase.

In English, we may say to your friends and family to Take care, and have a good day as a parting phrase. In Japanese though, you should use in these circumstances when youre saying bye to someone.

Alternatively, you could still say , which means enjoy your day in Japanese . Which one you prefer will be dependent on you. Youll hear frequently in Japan when people want to say goodbye or Have a good day to each other.

To say See you later in Japanese, simply remove , and attach .

by itself means later, or after. By making it , the phrase can be understood as a way to say See you later in Japanese.

Note that you should only use this phrase between people who are close to you personally like friends and family.

For a more frequently used expression to say anything along the lines of I hope you had a good time, or I hope you had a great day today in Japanese, use ? .

This expression is in the past tense. Therefore, you should use it when you want to express your wishes that the persons day, which is now over, has gone well in Japanese.

Personally, I use this expression all the time. Its very easy to use as it doesnt have any special exemptions or irregular uses.

To be more time-specific, attach the word , meaning today to the beginning of the expression. By doing so, you ask the listener specifically if their day went well.

Keep in mind that when you want to say to someone I hope you had a good time today in Japanese, you have to phrase it like a question. This is because the direct translation of in Japanese is Did you have fun? rather than I hope you had fun.

Even so, when you ask someone ? , it still has the connotation of I hope you had a good time. The person youre speaking to will understand that youre interested in what happened and that you hope they enjoyed themselves.
