How To Heal Newly Pierced Ears

The ear piercing process takes only seconds, but newly pierced ears require six to eight weeks of healing time, according to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation 12. Taking proper care of the pierced ears and keeping them clean will speed healing, reduce pain and prevent infection. It is essential that a trained professional pierce your ears in a sterile environment to prevent complications.

Leave the earring in your ear. Removing an earring from a newly pierced ear may cause the hole to close. You can promote healing and prevent or treat an infection while the earring is in your ear.

Replace the earring if it is made of nickel or another cheaper metal. The Nemours Foundation states that these metals are a common source of allergic reaction, and can slow healing in newly pierced ears 2. If you believe this could be an issue, change the earring to one with a gold or hypoallergenic stud. Put the new earring in the hole immediately to prevent it from closing.

Wash your hands with warm water and soap before handling your newly pierced ears or your earrings. Touching your ears with dirty hands can introduce potentially harmful bacteria.

Rotate the earring several times each day for the first few weeks after having your ear pierced. This will prevent your ear from healing tightly closed around the earring.

Tips

  • Seek professional help. Doing it on your own may be difficult. Ideally, you should go back to your piercer for the first cleaning, and use that opportunity to change rings.
  • Be patient. Treat one piercing at a time if you have multiple piercings.
  • Resort to warm saline water. If it is very difficult to remove the ring, then use warm water and saline. Mix warm water and saline and dab a cotton ball in it and squeeze it over the hole. Rotate the ring while you put warm water on the wound.

What If There Is An Infection

Infections can and do happen. Its vital you recognize the early signs of an infection before its too late. Your childs ear may be red and swollen for a few days after their piercing. However, if your child complains that its still itchy, it appears red and swollen, or there is discharge, it may be infected.

Clean the earlobe with the earring still in with saltwater and cover it with over-the-counter antibiotic cream. Rotate the piercing, as well. If the infection doesnt go away, contact your childs pediatrician right away. They may advise the removal of the piercing. How Long Do You Have To Clean Your Ear Piercing

Beyond the usual cleaning of the ears during showers and baths, youll need to use a special ear piercing cleaning solution. This is different from typical soap, and youll need to keep your earrings on during the healing period and cleanse the pierced area at least thrice a day.

Its crucial to clean your ear piercing properly, especially during the first few weeks of having it. This prevents it from incurring any infection, which will be painful and tougher to treat.

With that in mind, how long should you clean your ear piercing for?

I highly recommend that you clean your ear piercing for at least six weeks for earlobe piercings, and 12 weeks for cartilage piercings. This is how long the healing process is, which is why its crucial to keep them clean and free from infection during these times.

However, more time may be required, depending on your piercing and how your ears react to it. The cartilage location makes a difference in healing and cleaning times.

Even after the healing period, you still need to care for your ears and piercings properly with daily washing. Its also recommended to use your ear care cleaning solution to keep both the earrings and piercings clean at all times. This is especially important if you have just exercised, swum, or have had exposure to any hair products and perfumes.

How To Disinfect Earrings Inside The Ear

This Is Why You Should NEVER Use A Q

It takes an average of four to six weeks for a new piercing to heal, during which time you need to leave the earrings in place. The best way to sterilize earrings inside the ear is as follows:

  • Wash hands thoroughly.
  • Dip a cotton ball or cotton swab into a capful of rubbing alcohol or specialized piercing and earring cleaning solution and apply to the front and back of the earlobes and the earring.
  • Gently rotate the earring in the ear for several turns.
  • Repeat this process once or twice each day until the holes have healed.

    Ear Piercing Is Closing Up

If you forget to wear your earrings or have decided to remove them before they fully heal, eventually your piercing hole will close up. This can make it difficult or even impossible to wear earrings.

Do not try to re-pierce the hole on your own. In case it closes slightly, slowly and gently push your earrings through your piercing to see if you can return them in place. If not, do not try to force your earring in as this can damage the tissue. Instead, make an appointment with a professional piercer or a doctor.

Is Salt Water Good For A Piercing

After having a piercing, it is important to keep the area clean and dry. You may be advised to gently clean the area with a warm saline or salt water solution. However, the piercing should be cleaned no more than is necessary to keep it clean, as over-cleaning can irritate the skin and delay healing.
