My Unpopular Opinion About Duolingo

If youve recently asked about how to homeschool foreign languages in a Facebook group, youve probably seen one tool recommended by parents over and over again: Duolingo.

Since its release in 2012, Duolingo has become immensely popular among homeschoolers. I get why: its free, its fun, and its easy to use. Ive detailed its smart design in my extensive review of Duolingo for homeschoolers and in general, I consider it an excellent tool to help students practice foreign languages.

I put a key word in that last sentence, howeverthe word practice.

After all, Duolingo, despite its strengths, is not a homeschool foreign language curriculum. It can help your child practice a language, but it wont teach your child a new language. At least, not in the systematic and comprehensive way that we should expect from an actual curriculum.

Perhaps youre asking yourself why this all matters. Maybe youre thinking, Who cares if Duolingo is an actual curriculum, as long as my child is enjoying it and learning something?

Maybe youd like to ask me just why Im being so harsh.

There are several useful apps for learning American Sign Language, but our clear favorite is Sign It ASL. This app meets the unique challenges of teaching fingerspelling as well as more complex signs, grammar, culture, and etiquette.

People can sign up without much, if any, expense and learn at their own pace ahead of a holiday or event – Japanese overtook Italian in popularity among the Welsh users of the app Busuu ahead of the 2019 Rugby World Cup hosted in Japan.

Alex Levinson, originally from the US but living in London, is learning the constructed language Esperanto – and Welsh – via an app.
