Antibiotics aren’t routinely prescribed because they:
- won’t help an infection caused by a virus
- won’t get rid of middle ear fluid
- can cause side effects
- usually don’t relieve pain in the first 24 hours and have only a minimal effect after that
Also, overuse of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which are much harder to treat.
If a doctor does prescribe antibiotics, a 10-day course is usually recommended. Kids age 6 and older who don’t have a severe infection might take a shortened course for 5 to 7 days.
Some children, such as those with recurrent infections and those with lasting hearing loss or speech delay, may need ear tube surgery. An ear, nose, and throat doctor will surgically insert tubes that let fluid drain from the middle ear. This helps equalize the pressure in the ear.

Airway Obstruction And Sleep Apnea
Airway obstruction is common in children with Down syndrome, with some studies suggesting that nearly all persons with Down syndrome have some form of sleep-related obstruction. Loss of sleep due to apnea and poor quality sleep due to sleep disordered breathing can result in sleepiness and disturbances in fine motor skills, and can also affect behavior and learning. Many people with sleep disorders fall asleep with passive activities such as riding in the car or school bus. Long term complications of sleep apnea include systemic hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, heart failure and even death.
Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway is blocked during sleep. This can be caused by the small upper airway, large adenoids and tonsils, obesity, collapse of the airway due to hypotonia of the muscles of the throat, and increased secretions that can be characteristic of persons with Down syndrome. Obstruction can also occur from glossoptosis, a condition where a relatively large tongue falls back into a smaller airway during sleep.
Obstructive sleep apnea is often overlooked by caregivers and medical professionals, as sleep disturbances often occur unobserved or have been present for so long that parents assumed that was normal for their child.
A comprehensive clinical exam, X-ray, and thorough sleep study should be conducted if sleep apnea is suspected.

When Else Are Antibiotics Needed
Antibiotics can be the right treatment for kids who get a lot of ear infections. Their doctors might prescribe daily antibiotics to help prevent future infections. And younger children or those with more severe illness may need antibiotics right from the start.
The “wait-and-see” approach also might not apply to children with other concerns, such as cleft palate, genetic conditions such as Down syndrome, or other illnesses such as immune system disorders.

Does anyone else suffer from draining itchy ears while they sleep? It only occurs when I sleep, and I been suffering for years. Been to a couple of Dr’s they check my ears and go they look fine. There is notjing wrong.
I wake up in the middle of the night, from my ears itching like crazy, my right ear more than my left.
One Doc gave me medicine for swimmers ear. It doesnt work.
So recently, took it upon myself to take two benadryl tablets before bed. Well that seems to help.My ears stop itching and draining while sleeping.Could I have an allergy causing this?Cause it just seems odd that the Benadyl works.Is it even ok to take Benadryl on a daily basis?

Just read your post on itchy ears ..sounds like you may have an allergy problem ..I have the same thing and have had it for years to..my main trouble is my nose , of course this connects to the ears and this courses all my troubleif I may say find yourself a good nose throat and ears doctor if that is possible and get him to give you the once over..I did this a couple of years ago and am now settled on a nose spray and a couple of tablets a day and it it controls it to an extentat night I to take two Benadryl tabs and it does the trick also helps you off to sleepBeryl
