Ear Pain After Wax Removal

Earwax is a often considered a nuisance, but it plays an important role in ear health. Also called cerumen, this substance protects the lining of the ear and helps remove debris from the ear canal. But sometimes this wax builds up and blocks the ear canal — and needs to be removed. While removal has minimal side effects, sometimes minor ear pain can follow. If ear pain is severe, see your doctor.

If you are experiencing serious medical symptoms, seek emergency treatment immediately.

Impacted Ear Wax Removal

Other alternative ear wax removal techniques like ear candling can also be dangerous and ineffective and are therefore not recommended1.

Earwax buildup can happen to anyone. Its estimated to be present in about 10% of children and 5% of adults who are healthy.

However, it is more likely to occur in:

  • People who use hearing aids, ear plugs or ear buds.
  • People with a lot of ear hair or who have certain skin conditions.
  • People who put cotton swabs or other items into their ears.
  • Older people.

Children produce earwax. Unless they produce too much, you should be careful about cleaning their ears. Only use a washcloth to clean the outside. Dont worry about it unless there are signs that your child is being bothered by earwax buildup. These signs may include pulling or tugging at the ears, putting things into the ears or problems with hearing. If this happens, contact your healthcare provider.

Older adults

Older adults may have difficulty with earwax buildup if they wear hearing aids. They might also just ignore their ears. Earwax buildup can cause significant hearing loss and should be addressed.

The more you learn about COVID-19 the more there is to dislike about it. The global death toll from the virus is now more than five million and for those who survive there can be long-term health consequences. We know COVID can attack the lungs, heart and brain. Now we are learning it can also mess up your ears causing hearing problems, ringing in the ear and leave you dizzy.

Viral infections are a known cause of hearing loss and other kinds of infection. Thats why, before the pandemic started, Dr. Konstantina Stantovic at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and Dr. Lee Gherke at MIT had been studying how and why things like measles, mumps and hepatitis affected peoples hearing. After COVID hit they heard reports of patients experiencing sudden hearing loss and other problems, so they decided to take a closer look.

They took cells from ten patients who had all experienced some hearing or ear-related problems after testing positive for COVID and, using the iPSC method, turned those cells into the kind found in the inner ear including hair cells, supporting cells, nerve fibers, and Schwann cells.

In contrast, some of the other cells in the inner ear didnt have those proteins and so were protected from COVID.

The study is published in the journal Communications Medicine.

CIRM has funded 17 different projects targeting COVID-19, several of which are still active.

How Is Earwax Buildup And Blockage Treated

Earwax can be removed in several ways. Some of these methods can be done at home.

You can clean the outside of the ear by wiping with a cloth. Dont wad up the cloth and push it into the ear canal.

You can use cerumenolytic solutions into the ear canal. These solutions include:

  • Mineral oil.
  • Hydrogen peroxide or peroxide-based ear drops .
  • Saline solution.

With these solutions, you put a few drops into the affected ear with a dropper and lie on the opposite side so that the solution can drip into your affected ear. You can also soak a cotton ball and put it over the affected ear and let the solution drip into the ear.

Another option is irrigating or syringing the ear. This involves using a syringe to rinse out the ear canal with water or saline solution. Generally, this is done after the wax has been softened or dissolved by a cerumenolytic.

Finally, your healthcare provider can remove the wax manually using special instruments. The provider might use a cerumen spoon, forceps, or suction device.

Note: Your ears _should not _be irrigated if you have, or think you have, a perforation in your eardrum or if you have tubes in the affected ear.

How not to clean your ears

Dont use suction devices for home use . They arent effective for most people and arent recommended.

Ear candles, which are advertised as a natural method to remove earwax, are ineffective. They can also cause injuries such as burns to the external ear and ear canal and perforation of the eardrum.

Tooth Decay And Ear Pain

Another common cause of earache and toothache at the same time is tooth decay. If your tooth has suffered major damage, or if you notice that you have a bad cavity, your mouth is going to cry for help via sending pain signals up your neck and into your ear. Fortunately, tooth decay is something that can be easily treated at your dental clinic.

If you have a bad cavity or have suffered major damage to a tooth, it can be quite painful. When one of your molars has been affected, its possible for the pain you experience in the back of your mouth to radiate to the ear area. This mistake is common and thankfully cavities and tooth decay can be treated with relative ease.

    Where Wax Comes From

Dead skin and other debris combine with secretions from sebaceous and modified sweat glands to create earwax.

Earwax that picks up a lot of debris or sits in the ear canal for a long time can get hard and dry, so it’s more likely to cause a blockage. Conditions that produce a lot of dry, flaking skin, like eczema, can also result in hard earwax. And with age, the glandular secretions change consistency, so they don’t travel as easily through the ear canal.

Some people are simply born producing dry earwax that may be more likely to clump. For example, dry earwax is more common in East Asians.
