American Sign Language Phrases

Sign Language: What Is Your Name?

A great introduction to learning ASL is studying American Sign Language phrases. While doing this, you can get a great taste of vocabulary as well as begin to understand the difference between ASL grammar and English grammar.

For all of our phrase videos, we share the English phrase as well as the ASL gloss so you can study more easily. You can view them below:

Sign Language Words And Grammar

ASL sentences use a topic structure. The topic of an ASL sentence is like the subject of a sentence in English. Using the object of your sentence as the topic is called topicalization. Often the topic of an ASL sentence is a pronoun, such as I, you, he or she. An ASL speaker may sign a subject pronoun at the beginning of a sentence, the end of a sentence or both. For instance, if you were to say “I am an employee” in ASL, you could sign “I employee,””employee I,” or “I employee I.” All three are grammatically correct in ASL.

The comment section of an ASL sentence is similar to an English sentence’s predicate – it says something about the topic. You might see a third element added to an ASL sentence structure to indicate the tense of the sentence. You would normally structure such a sentence as time topic comment. Depending on what you are trying to communicate and the style your receiver is used to seeing, you may alter the order of your signs for clarity. ASL grammar is not strict when it comes to sign order for time, topic and comment sections of a sentence, though many speakers feel that whatever order is least like English is the most appropriate. Expressing the time frame for the sentence at the end can be confusing — most speakers avoid it.

In the next section, we’ll talk about some basic rules of etiquette when conversing in ASL.

If I Am Ambidextrous Or Left

If you are ambidextrous , or if you are left-handed but feel comfortable doing some activities with your right hand, and you are wondering if you should try to use your right hand as your dominant hand when signing, here are some things to think about:

  • Are you just starting to sign or have you been signing for quite some time? If you are just beginning to sign, then you may have more flexibility to choose which hand you want to use as your dominant hand when signing. If you have been signing for some time, it may be difficult to change your dominant hand.
  • It is really about what feels most comfortable and natural to you when signing. It is a question only you can really answer. You need to pick one dominant hand.
  • If you feel strongly that you could equally use either hand for your dominant hand when signing, there are some advantages to using your right hand.
  • Since 90% of people are right-handed , you will see the majority of people signing with their right hand as their dominant hand. Therefore, you will see more sign models with right-hand dominance. Your signing may also look more like others if you sign with your right hand.
  • Based on research, signers are faster to process phonologically simple signs produced by right-handed signers and faster to process complex signs with asymmetrical handshapes by same-handed signers .

If Its Your Destiny To Be Born Deaf Then This Would Very Likely Be The Best Place In The World To Grow Up

Sign

When my uncle was younger, he toured the island making a small living by giving martial arts demonstrations, Wisnu translated as Kolok Getar continued his story in a whirl of karate-chop hand signs. He met many deaf people but could hardly communicate with them, because, if they knew sign language at all, it was a different version . Those deaf people were often lonely because they could only talk with one or two members of their close family.

If its your destiny to be born deaf, said I Ketut Kanta, spokesman for Bengkalas Deaf Alliance, then this would very likely be the best place in the world to grow up!

Kata Kolok is only used in the village of Bengkala, Bali, where an unusually large proportion of the population has been born deaf

Hearing people are known as enget, and no matter where you are in the village you will often come across mixed groups of kolok and enget all chatting in what they call deaf talk. Whether youre visiting the primary school, at the central temple or sipping sweet black kopi at Pak Supardas little warung , youre likely to see deaf and hearing people in animated but silent conversation, or jostling each other with boisterous laughter.

Kolok and enget are paid equal rates for work in the village, I Ketut Kanta told me. Nevertheless, it isnt easy for deaf people to find a job outside the village, and it is sometimes hard to get by here on local labour wages of about US$5 a day.

Profanity In American Sign Language

This article includes a list of general references, but it remains largely unverified because it lacks sufficient corresponding inline citations. Please help to improve this article by introducing more precise citations.

American Sign Language , the sign language used by the deaf community throughout most of North America, has a rich vocabulary of terms, which include profanity. Within deaf culture, there is a distinction drawn between signs used to curse versus signs that are used to describe sexual acts. In usage, signs to describe detailed sexual behavior are highly taboo due to their graphic nature. As for the signs themselves, some signs do overlap, but they may also vary according to usage. For example, the sign for “shit” when used to curse is different from the sign for “shit” when used to describe the bodily function or the fecal matter.

Psa About Signing Thank You

Thank you is signed one-handed from the front of the chin. Be careful not to begin that sign under the chin before arcing outward or you change it to f*** you, which is considered offensive to most people.

Further, starting at your cheek, next to your chin, and moving outward is the sign for prostitute, or similar terms.

Finally, starting from your lips, rather than your chin before the outward arc, is blowing a kiss. A misplaced sign starting point can be the difference between a sign of gratitude and one of insult. That makes it essential to use the correct palm orientation, handshape, location, non-manual signals/ expressions, and other language features youll learn about later, when signing ASL.

Baby signs are often based on American Sign Language , but some may teach a variation on it. The focus is on keywords that are central to your babys world and very basic, without any of the advanced grammar or other body language nuances of full nonverbal speech. That said, babies who learn basic sign language can build on this as older kids, says Steyns.

Theres a misconception that babies who sign are somehow stalled when it comes to verbal communication. The research is absolutely the opposite, says Steyns. Many babies who learn to sign actually speak earlier.

How To Ask Questions In Sign Language

This video includes a lesson in how to sign these common question words:

  • Who
  • How
  • Whats up

I also talk a little about how these question words are used. For example, Whats up? in sign language is often used as an informal greeting, just as it is in English. But its also used to ask for more information or for an explanation of a concept.
