Hearing aid batteries are zinc-air operated. This is because in order to activate them, you need to remove their colour-coded factory-sealed sticker to allow oxygen to interact with the battery to turn it on. The sticker cannot be put back onto the battery to turn it off. Once it is removed, the battery remains turned on until its power is drained.

How Do I Know Which Batteries I Need Fo My Hearing Aid
Hearing aid batteries come in standard sizes – no matter which make of hearing aid you have it will use one of the industry-standard battery sizes. To make things easier to remember, batteries are color-coded, the ones on sale here are ORANGE, also known as size 13.
If you are not sure which size you need check the packet/card that your current batteries came in, the packaging will clearly show the colour. If you do not have a packet/card then you may have a battery with the “tab” still on, which will also be colored for the size. No packaging and no tab on your battery? Look closely at the battery itself, printed on one side will be the size of the battery – the text will be quite small to read. How Long Do Batteries Last
There are many variables that determine how long your battery will power your hearing aids.
A standard zinc-air battery lasts anywhere from three to 22 days, depending upon the type of hearing aid, the capacity of the battery, and the amount of hearing aid use throughout each day. The smallest hearing aid batteries, used for 12 to 16 hours per day, may need to be changed every three or four days, while the largest hearing aid batteries used for only a couple hours each day may go several weeks without needing to be changed.
To minimize battery drain, turn off the hearing aid when its not in use. Opening the battery door is also an option, and a good way to dry out accumulated moisture. But if the hearing aids wont be used for an extended period of time , removing the battery entirely is the best method.

These Figures Are Not That Useful
First, the study was published in 2013. While zinc-air technology has not moved on that much, changes in manufacturing processes and chemistry can have a significant difference to the end result. Even something as simple as a change in factory something that is quite common in the business world can yield significantly different results. So the figures may well have moved on since then.
More significantly, the study itself was limited. It was restricted by geographical location, so only batteries available in Brazil were tested, and the laboratory was not strictly temperature and humidity controlled, so there were significant fluctuations on a day-to-day basis. This is relevant because zinc-air batteries rely on absorbing oxygen from the air to create a current. Humidity, in particular, can significantly affect batteries efficiency.
Even worse, the study only tested two batteries for each set of figures, and they were from the same batch. This means that individual performance was being tested, not the overall manufacturing performance of each battery. Creating a suitably rigorous study should involve 20 or 30 batteries, at the very least, all from different batches.

In a recent broad laboratory test conducted on several of the most popular brands of replaceable power cells, it was determined which ones had the longest battery life, and continued performing at a high level the longest. Power cell sizes are different between auditory aid devices, and these sizes beginning with the largest and proceeding to the smallest size, are 675, 13, 312, 10, and 5.
These are found in most of todays best and most capable aids, including those offered by Harbor Audiology & Hearing Services.
For the larger 675, the top performer was the Duracell, and for the size 13, the leader was a battery manufactured by Renata. Duracells was again the best performer in the 312 size tested, and the longest-lasting size 10 was made by Rayovac.
Some manufacturers, like the Duracell size 13 battery, are made available to the public in value size packages which might contain as many as 80, and should last for at least several months before needing replenishment.
Other options come with an EasyTab, which allows for easy replacement, for those who have limited hand dexterity or mobility. Some like the Duracell size 10 battery, are also sold in a protective case which will keep them from becoming loose and getting lost somehow.
Others, such as the Rayovac 312, also come with a shelf life of several years, so they can be safely stored for a long period of time before being used.
What These Figures Do Tell Us
These figures do tell us that manufacturers figures are not consistent, and thats primarily down to the ways in which battery life can be tested.
Essentially, manufacturers can make up any testing method that correspond as closely as possible to the performance results as experienced by consumers when using the product in practice. This is according to Annex G of IEC 60086-1. The only stipulation is that the results must be reproducible and that they should be useful to consumers.
Given that the power draw between different hearing aids can vary wildly, manufacturers can essentially use any reasonable power draw conditions to paint their products in the best light possible. In addition, there is no requirement that they use the same methodology across each type of battery.
The result is a huge discrepancy.
