Greetings In Sign Language

ASL Tutorial Introduce yourself

Learn how to express greetings in sign language and ASL culture. The most common greetings in ASL are hi and hello.

Simply express “hi”. It’s very commonly used in everyday use.

Another way is the sign hello. A Deaf signer may sign “hello” in a formal scenario .

The ASL sign glossed as HI doesn’t always translate into English “hi” but sometimes “hello”. There is a variation of intonation.

Sometimes, when a Deaf friend hasn’t seen his/her dear friend for a long time, they might sign HELLO with some intonation. It’s equivalent to “big hello”.

For a beginner, just be familiar with these two signs. There are several variations of “hi” and “hello” that learners may observe over time at Deaf social events.

Tips For A Better Presentation

Use these tips to give a good presentation:

  • Use visual aids. Slideshows, videos, images and other visual elements can add to your presentation. You can use them to guide your presentation and help people stay interested in what you have to share.

  • Practise in front of an audience. While practising in front of your mirror can help you learn your lines, consider asking your friends and family if you can give your speech to them. This can help you calm your nerves and learn what to improve.

  • Be excited about your work. Encourage the audience to feel excited about your presentation by being an energetic speaker. Along with changing your tone of voice, make sure you are using hand gestures and smiling throughout your speech.

  • Ask questions throughout. Consider asking your audience questions periodically. This encourages them to be more attentive listeners and can help them reflect on the content of your presentation.

  • Be a gracious speaker. Always thank your audience for giving you time to speak. This shows that you value their time and attention.

As much I love the rush thats brought about by spontaneity, there are some situations that turn out better with a little preparation.

Small talk is the perfect example to illustrate this point.

The best advice I could give you is to keep your introductions short and light. Youll also want to give the other person room for follow-up questions.

When it comes to greetings, you could say: Hey there, Morning! or Whats up?

How To Introduce Yourself In A Class

So youre in a class with other students and your teacher asks you to introduce yourself in English.

Self-introductions in a class are meant to be brief and conversational. You dont need to provide a detailed account of your life. Keep this checklist in mind:

    • Mention your given name if different from your official name.

    • Talk about where youre from, or where you were born and where youre living now.

    • Maybe youre too busy at work and dont have time for hobbies. Not a problem! Just talk about a hobby you did in the past, or an activity youd like to try in the future.

    • If youre taking the class by choice, mention the reason youve decided to take it.

This leads us to something like this:

Hey, Im Mateo but people here call me Matt. I grew up in Argentina, and lived there most of my life before moving to the United States. I speak Italian, Spanish and English. I love gaming, and I stream on Twitch almost every day. Ive always wanted to improve my English so now that I have the time, Ive finally signed up for classes online.

    Heres another example:

My names Lucia and Im from Spain. I was born in the south of Spain but I live in Barcelona. I work as a translator, and I dont have much time for hobbies these days. But in the future, Id like to try yoga. Im taking this class because I want to improve my speaking in English.

Example:Did you know that 30% of India’s retailers rely on CustomMax Pro for customer management? By 2030, that number is expected to spike by 15%. 45% of those same retailers today using this platform to track sales and marketing efforts still experience slow connection speeds and platform crashes. This is why I urge you to consider adopting Target Reach Plus for your customer management, which already boasts a much lower percentage rates of crashing and sluggishness.

How To Introduce Yourself In A Meeting At Work

Work meetings are usually planned ahead, but lets not overlook the importance of the introduction.

Lets say you have to lead the meeting. In my experience, meetings at work are expected to get straight to the point. So start with a quick greeting then share the purpose of the meeting right away.

Here are some things you should consider when tailoring your introduction:

    • Quick greeting.

    Fingerspelling A Full Name

In some cases such as formal settings, when introducing, one fingerspells a full name.

How does one indicate a space between two names, between Ms/Mr and a surname or between two words in general when fingerspelling? Spell with a slight pause and slight nod between the forename and surname or other two things. In reality, it’s very subtle that one has to be sensitive to the rhythm or intonation.

Gloss: fs-Ms fs-LapiakEnglish translation: Ms. Lapiak.

Learner tip: Do not fingerspell a first name then sign “LAST NAME” then fingerspell the surname. One may use this way occasionally in some contexts . But, it’s not recommended in general or everyday interactions.

    Ask For Audience Participation

If you do not plan to make a bold statement or tell a story, ask your audience to participate. The best way to do this is by asking an open-ended question that requires them to either raise a hand or stand up to answer. If it is early in the morning, try asking them to stand up when they answer your question. This tactic works best in more intimate to small-scale audiences.

If you are unsure of what attention-grabbing tactic may work best, use a friend, coworker or family member to practise. They can give you feedback on things like your body language, dress attire and, ultimately, what tactic works best with your presentation’s main idea.
