New Irish Sign Language Support Website Launched
ISL Everywhere is a collaborative project between Sharing the Journey , the Irish Deaf Society and the Centre for Deaf Studies.
ISL Everywhere was launched in late March 2013 and is an online resource. It aims to support parents of deaf and hard of hearing children to learn Irish Sign Language .
The free website is designed to be accessed from smart phones or any other internet-enabled devices, so parents can access words needed for daily routines at home or on the go.
The mobile website includes over 1,000 signs and phrases needed for daily routines, focusing on the everyday vocabulary of a child’s life a word association feature which helps parents expand their child’s vocabulary and their understanding of the world around them and there is also printable resource materials and a rainy day activities section.

The Best Ways To Learn Sign Language
The sign languages used in Canada are American Sign Language or ASL and a less commonly used sign language, Langue des signes québécoise or Langue des signes du Québec, which is known as LSQ. This is based on ASL and French Sign Language. Sign language is fun and exciting and relatively easy to learn. Each of these can fall under the umbrella of “Canadian Sign Language.”
Maybe you have a relative, friend or student who is Deaf. Or you might just find the language interesting and challenging. Whatever your reasoning is, learning Canadian Sign Language will allow you to converse with those who use sign language, especially members of the Deaf community. Either by following the steps, enrolling in Canadian Sign Language courses online or in-person Canadian Sign Language classes, you can pick it up in no time!

Stuff To Read In Irish
While it may seem like quite the daunting task to attempt to read in Irish if you are starting off, and don’t look forward to having to consult a dictionary slowly for many words, you can use a great completely free resource to read online in Irish and have your new vocabulary tracked and the dictionary very easy to access by using this’s sites: Learning with Textstool. In the video demonstration, I show you a text I am reading in Irish.
One place I like to find nice articles is beo.ie, especially since they have a mouse-over option to see tricky words translated to English. You also have the regularly updated Foinse, Nuacht24, or you could check out some of the over 14,000 entries on the Irish language Wikipedia, a.k.a. Vicipéid.
Hire A Private Qualified Sign Language Tutor
If you want to learn sign language quickly, a private tutor could be the best way. Research local, qualified sign language tutors in your area who are willing to offer private tuition. Courses could be done in one-to-one sessions, or in small groups of your choice. You may find a private tutor more of a benefit if you find a large class environment is too difficult to learn in.

Another thing that happens this week is Seachtain na Gaeilge an awareness initiative aligning with the week leading up to or around Paddy’s day, to promote the Irish language. This post is my small attempt to contribute to that promotion!
First thing’s first have a read through this post where I give a summary of the Irish language . It’s a beautiful language in the Celtic branch of European languages and the official language of Ireland, while being very different to English. In fact, the English we speak in Ireland is highly influenced by Gaeilge, and you can read about the components of Irish English here.
While some might be tempted to think of it as a dying language, only used in the countryside, today I want to share how incredibly prominent the language is on the Internet, and very much alive and kicking! You have a vast amount of resources for consuming Irish used naturally, as well as for learning it. Hopefully today’s summary post gives you a good start!

Resources To Learn Irish Gaelic
If you feel ready to get started on Gaeilge yourself, Iâve got a couple of resources to help you. Maybe you can use them to work towards having a 15-minute conversation in Gaeilge after 90 days!

Even if you aren’t in Ireland, the possibilities of listening to and practising Irish are endless! An idea that I’ve already mentioned before is to use meetup.com to see if there are other interested Irish learners in your city.
If youâre more of a solo learner, you can turn to books. Whether in Ireland or abroad, there are usually some books in major libraries on learning Irish.
If you canât access them near you, you might need to look for them online. One of my favourites for beginners is the multimedia Turas Teanga course . It is from Irish language RTE newsreader Sharon NÃ Bheolain. She teaches the language while going around the country showing it used by natives.
Teach Yourself is also a great book about Irish for complete beginners .
The more adventurous of you can even read Harry Potter in Irish! .
But reading doesnât have to be long and hard! You can also try short, simple texts. I do this with all of my maintained languages. You can follow me on Twitter for small bits of Irish Gaelic.
You can also change the language of your computer and software to be entirely in Irish! Chrome, Firefox, Open Office, Ubuntu and many more interfaces are available as Gaeilge.

The School of Sign Language and Primary Sign vision is to inspire schools to embrace the opportunity to deliver a truly bilingual philosophy treating the learning of British Sign Language and English with equal importance. Primary Sign is an interactive online learning programme specifically designed to introduce British Sign Language to Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils. It can be taught in a group or individually and incorporates National Curriculum literacy and numeracy subjects and helps improve ICT skills. It has been designed to be delivered by a teacher without any knowledge of Deaf awareness/BSL. Your school could also run it as a lunch time or after school club, which the PTA could charge a small fee to raise money for the school or simply cover the cost.

There are a few tricky aspects of the language that deserve a mention.
In most languages, you change the end of words in certain situations.
Examples:
- to show plural: car â cars
- to change a verbâs tense: I eat â he eats
Other times, itâs the middle of the words that changes: man/men, mouse/mice.
In Irish, we very merrily change the beginning of words. This is something common in other Celtic languages and it adds to a nice flow between words.
For those of you who don’t know, my name is actually Brendan . In Irish, this is originally written Breandán. When followed by verbs and such, it stays the same:
Tá Breandán ag ithe âBrendan is eating.â
However, thanks to the magic of initial mutations, we can change the start of words in many situations!
So if you want to get my attention some day, don’t shout Breandán!! Instead, use A Bhreandán!! It is actually pronounced ah Vrendawn since bh=v!
Hereâs another example: Mo and madra become mo mhadra together. Since mh=w, this is pronounced mo wadra.
This strange use of spelling and the other examples mentioned above may seem off putting. But believe it or not, it’s actually quite helpful! Let me explain.
We keep the letter of the original base word in a modified version of the word.
Example: crann becomes i gcrann . The c’ is silent, but essential for recognising the original word when the modified one is written.
But sometimes we just separate the words in an easy way. âExitâ is simply bealach amach .
Learning Irish Online With Courses Such As Rosetta Stone
You will likely have heard about the Rosetta stone. It is a cross between Duo Lingo and a traditional course. However, it focuses more on getting you speaking instead of learning vocabulary with Duo Lingo.
It also follows more of a curriculum-based platform and, of course, is not free. It varies from country to country but starts at about 12 per month.

Types Of Sign Language
The first thing to understand is what type of sign language you want to learn. This will most likely be based on where you live, and what verbal language is spoken in your community. Hand signs can vary based on the type of sign language being used. For example, there is American Sign Language , British Sign Language and various others, based on different languages.
In general, sign language is grouped into three sections :
- Deaf sign languages: The preferred languages of Deaf communities around the world including village sign languages, shared with the hearing community, and Deaf-community sign languages
- Auxiliary sign languages: Sign systems used alongside oral, spoken languages.
- Signed modes of spoken languages, or manually coded languages: Used to bridge signed and spoken languages

The best part of all, is that Irish speakers are generally always happy to help!
We are a long cry from arrogant perfectionists, something that holds too many people back from speaking a language. If you can form some sentences, we’ll be very happy to hear them. Even if there are some grammatical mistakes ð
Whenever I hear a cúpla focal from someone, I always encourage them to keep going!
My Irish is far from perfect. My accent is definitely not as lovely as so many others that you would hear. But I enjoy the language!

How Many Sign Languages Are In The World
One of the most common misconceptions about sign language is that itâs universal and the same wherever you go.
There are over 200 different sign languages around the world and most countries that share a spoken language do not share the same sign language. For example: Irish Sign Language , American Sign Language are British Sign Language are different.
Practice Spelling Basic Words And Numbers
Practice spelling simple words, like “cat”, working on making your transitions from one letter to another smooth and precise. Add more complex words as you improve. Numbers are also important to learn in the beginning. Numbers are used frequently and you will do well to know them by heart. Remember not to bounce or move your hand too much when finger spelling. It makes it easier to understand.

If youre new to ASL, there are some important facts you should know about signing. First off, ASL goes beyond hand gestures alone facial expressions and body language also play a critical role in communication. For example, weve seen that you use your eyebrows when asking a question.
Next, you should know that ASL is not used worldwide. Other sign styles such as British Sign Language differ in many important ways, although its still possible for some trans-lingual signers to communicate in a basic form. Cultures around the world have developed their own ways to communicate via sign, and its interesting to learn how people communicate in languages other than ASL.
