Why Is Tinnitus Sometimes Irreversible

how to stop ringing in the ears after shooting a gun

Usually, tinnitus is temporary. But sometimes it can be permanent. When the root cause is not ordinary thats particularly true When it comes to intensity and origin. Here are several examples:

  • Traumatic Brain Trauma : The brain is where the majority of sound is processed. When those processors begin to misfire, because of traumatic brain injury, tinnitus can be the result.
  • Hearing loss: In many cases, hearing loss and tinnitus are joined at the hip. So, whatever the cause of your hearing loss is, you could also wind up developing irreversible tinnitus along with it.
  • Repeated exposure: If your ears are buzzing after one rock concert, imagine how theyll feel after five rock concerts a week or if youre a musician who performs concerts and practices all day. Continued exposure to loud noises can lead to irreversible hearing damage, including tinnitus.

Short term tinnitus is a lot more common than lasting tinnitus. But permanent or chronic tinnitus still effects millions of Americans each year.

Often Times Tinnitus Doesnt Just Go Away

If your tinnitus persists for over three months its then labeled as chronic tinnitus .

Around 5-15% of people around the world have documented indications of chronic tinnitus. The precise causes of tinnitus are still not well known though there are some known connections .

When the triggers of your tinnitus arent clear, it normally means that a fast cure will be unidentifiable. If your ears have been ringing for over three months and theres no identifiable cause, theres a good chance that the sound will not go away on its own. But if this is your situation, you can protect your quality of life and deal with your symptoms with some treatment options .

Choose The Right Protective Gear For Shooting Sports

Every sport has its own protective gear and shooting is no exception. In this sport, the type of hearing protection you wear depends upon the environment.

  • Range shooting: Because gunfire happens at a rapid and continuous pace in this setting and usually indoors where sound is more concentrated, Terry recommends wearing a pair of earmuffs over foam ear plugs to provide the best protection against hearing loss. Specialty earmuffs can be found online or at your local sporting good store foam ear plugs can be purchased inexpensively at the drugstore. A comfortable fit is important so you don’t feel compelled to take them off.
  • Competitive skeet: In this outdoor setting, shooters are constantly looking around searching for their target, which may not be conducive to wearing ear muffs. Instead, Terry recommends skeet shooters invest in a pair of custom molded ear plugs which block all sound from the rapid fire. Your audiologist may provide this service or recommend a reliable source
  • Hunting: Since its important to hear whats going on around you when youre hunting, it isnt a good idea to wear ear protection that blocks all sound. For this activity, Terry suggests hunters wear specialty electronic hearing protection which suppresses the gunfire when the trigger is pulled. These devices can be found online or in your local sporting goods store.

If you wear hearing aids, talk to your audiologist about the best type of hearing protection to wear in each situation.

Prevention Tips To Stop Ringing In Ears

Avoid loud noises: While loud noises can sometimes be unavoidable, making an effort to reduce the controllable aspects of your life can make a big difference for preventing ringing in the ears. Decreasing the volume of your music player, staying away from noisy traffic by finding alternative routes, and avoiding any construction sites is in your best interest. A hint that your environment may be too loud is if you have to raise your voice to speak to someone about eight feet away from you.

Consume less salt: Tinnitus may be the result of a medical condition called Menieres disease. It is characterized by excessive amounts of fluid in the ear causing tinnitus, fullness in the ear, dizziness, and even hearing loss. While no definite treatments are available for this condition, patients are recommended to limit their consumption of table salt to 2,000 to help reduce symptoms.

Consume less caffeine: Coffee, tea, and cola all contain caffeine in them which can exacerbate tinnitus. Caffeine is known to constrict blood vessels and temporally raise blood pressure, while only worsening rigging in the ears. Giving up caffeine may not completely alleviate tinnitus, but could provide some relief.

Listen to the sounds of nature: A common practice to help people relax and can be a great way to reduce ringing in the ears. Previous studies have found that the sounds of water and nature are significantly more effective for relieving tinnitus than other various types of white noise.

What Is Shooter’s Ear

Ear Protection for Shooting Matters

Its obvious when a patient has been involved with firearms, whether as a hobbyist or member of the armed forces, Terry said, because they have the classic hearing loss pattern known as “shooter’s ear.”

You can look at someones hearing who has been shooting for years and tell from their hearing loss which ear they hold a gun up to, she said, explaining that the shooting arm shoulder helps shield the blast from hitting the ear full force, causing more damage to hearing on the opposite side.

How Can You Get Your Tinnitus To Subside

Customizing the NSSF Top Ten Gun Safety Rules: Part 2

Whether your tinnitus is short term or long lived, you will want to find relief as soon as you can. Even though theres no cure for tinnitus, there are a few things you can do to lessen symptoms :

  • Find a way to cover up the sound: You can in some cases mask the sound and get a good nights sleep by utilizing some source of white noise including a humidifier or fan.
  • Try to keep calm: Maybe it sounds a little abstract, but increased blood pressure can bring about tinnitus flare ups so keeping calm can help keep your tinnitus at bay.
  • Use earplugs : If you cannot avoid loud environments, then safeguarding your hearing is the next best option.
  • Stay away from loud noises. Your symptoms may be prolonged or might become more intense if you continue to expose yourself to loud noises like rock concerts or a jet engine.

Unfortunately, none of these tactics will cure permanent tinnitus. But diminishing and controlling your symptoms can be just as important.

Bonus: Care And Handling Of Firearms

    Gun Oil

Always keep your guns clean, well-lubricated, and in good working order. Firearms are simply machines made from a combination of steel, aluminum, wood, and polymer. Machines function best when clean and well-lubricated.

A byproduct of burning propellant gases is carbon. Over time carbon can build up on a firearm. Eventually the moving parts fail to work as designed.

Always follow the manufacturers suggested guidelines for care and maintenance of your firearm. Modern firearms are built to last a lifetime if cared for and maintained properly. Beware of storing guns in padded cases or gun rugs. These cases can trap moisture and hold it against the firearm. Store your guns in a cool, dry area.

Numerous types of gun oil and lubricants are available and most will serve you well. Like the engine in your car or truck, any place where metal moves against metal should have a light amount of lubricant. You wouldnt run your car engine without oil, would you? The same applies to firearms.

*Caution: Keep live ammunition away from oil and petroleum lubricants. Gun oil can ruin the cartridge primers.

If you suspect that a firearm has a mechanical issue, seek out the assistance of a qualified gunsmith or contact the manufacturer for guidance. Never attempt to fix a gun yourself unless you have the training to do so.

Ears Still Ringing Four Days After Shooting Ar

TL DR Four days after shooting, my right ear is still faintly ringing. Should I see a doctor?

ETA: Thanks for the replies guys. I understand it did long-term damage but the ringing will hopefully subside in a few days. If not Ill just man up and deal with it.

ETA 2: Its been ten days, ringing seems a tiny bit better. I went to a doctor today, he said I have acoustic trauma and the ringing will subside within 30 days. In the mean time he prescribed me a nine day course of prednisone to recover faster and lessen earaches. Also, he performed a hearing test on me and apparently my hearing is well above average for my age. So ya it should go away, now I learned to not half-ass ear protection during shooting.

OP: Four days ago, I consecutively shot about 90 rounds of .223 from my AR-15. It has a muzzle break so it sounds extremely loud to the shooter. My ear protection was not fully sealed while shooting.

Since then my right ear is still faintly ringing. It doesnt give me headaches but it hinders being able to fully hear out of my right ear and annoys me when Im trying to sleep.

This happened once before but went away after two days.

Do I need to see a doctor at this point? Should I give it more time to heal?
