When my uncle was younger, he toured the island making a small living by giving martial arts demonstrations, Wisnu translated as Kolok Getar continued his story in a whirl of karate-chop hand signs. He met many deaf people but could hardly communicate with them, because, if they knew sign language at all, it was a different version . Those deaf people were often lonely because they could only talk with one or two members of their close family.

Kata Kolok is only used in the village of Bengkala, Bali, where an unusually large proportion of the population has been born deaf
Hearing people are known as enget, and no matter where you are in the village you will often come across mixed groups of kolok and enget all chatting in what they call deaf talk. Whether youre visiting the primary school, at the central temple or sipping sweet black kopi at Pak Supardas little warung , youre likely to see deaf and hearing people in animated but silent conversation, or jostling each other with boisterous laughter.
Kolok and enget are paid equal rates for work in the village, I Ketut Kanta told me. Nevertheless, it isnt easy for deaf people to find a job outside the village, and it is sometimes hard to get by here on local labour wages of about US$5 a day.

Why Emphasize Early Language Learning
Parents should expose a deaf or hard-of-hearing child to language as soon as possible. The earlier a child is exposed to and begins to acquire language, the better that childs language, cognitive, and social development will become. Research suggests that the first few years of life are the most crucial to a childs development of language skills, and even the early months of life can be important for establishing successful communication with caregivers. Thanks to screening programs in place at almost all hospitals in the United States and its territories, newborn babies are tested for hearing before they leave the hospital. If a baby has hearing loss, this screening gives parents an opportunity to learn about communication options. Parents can then start their childs language learning process during this important early stage of development.
What Hasn’t Received Quite As Much Attention Is The Fact That The Ok Hand Gesture Is Actually A Crucial Part Of Sign Languages Including Auslan Which Is Used By The Deaf Community Across Australia
Within sign languages, a handshape isn’t the kind of thing you can simply remove or replace. In Auslan, the OK gesture forms part of many different words, similar to how different letters and sounds are used to form many different words in English.
“Just like words are made up of consonants and vowels, signs are made up of handshapes in specific locations with specific movements,” Auslan signer and linguist Adam Schembri explained.
The Auslan sign for “not”, for instance, is the “OK” handshape moving away from the body. The sign for “perfect” is the “OK” handshape made with both hands. The sign for “okay” doesn’t use the “OK” handshape at all.

For the deaf community, and for others who rely on sign languages, calls to abandon gestures like the OK sign can be deeply frustrating.
“The awareness of sign language is crucial to our capacity to be involved in the community,” Deaf Australia CEO Kyle Miers told The Feed.
“If these hand shapes or signs are taken out of use, it restricts our capacity to communicate with each other, which is a shame and a disgrace.”
In an effort to raise awareness of sign languages and reclaim the sign as their own, sign language communities around the world have been pushing back against the idea that the the OK gesture is now reserved for racists.

Sign Language For Toddlers
The sign language taught to normally hearing infants and toddlers is different from the American Sign Language used for the hearing impaired.
Its a limited vocabulary of simple signs, some of which are part of the ASL signs meant to express the common needs of this age group, as well as the objects they frequently encounter.
Most commonly, such signs will signify concepts like more, all gone, thank you, and where is it?
What The Research Says
The good news is that there are no real drawbacks to using signs with your young children. Many parents express concern that signing will delay the expression of verbal communication.
No studies have ever found that to be true, and there are some that suggest the exact opposite effect.
There are studies that suggest the use of sign language doesnt help infants and toddlers acquire verbal language earlier than usual, but even these studies dont show that signing delays the ability to talk.

For this more common use of the word OK, we can use the Korean adjective . This is used in a variety of situations such as asking if somebody is okay or giving him or her some support.
If you go to a sports match in Korea, often the supporters of the losing team will chant , in order to try and make the players feel better.
How Do You Say Days Of The Week In Asl
To say the word days of the week, in ASL: fold the dominant hand into an index-finger hand shape, then move it over the palm of the non-dominant hand.
Another option is to fold the left hand in an index finger handshape, palm facing right. Slide the right hand outward over the left hand and index finger.

How To Teach Sign Language To Infants And Toddlers
So how do parents teach these signs to their children, and which signs do they teach? There are several ways to teach babies how to sign.
One way thats been described is to follow these rules:
- Start at a young age, like 6 months. If your child is older, dont worry, as any age is appropriate to start signing.
- Try to keep sessions teaching sign language short, about 5 minutes each.
- First, perform the sign and say the word. For example, say the word more and perform the sign.
- If your baby performs the sign, then reward them with some sort of positive reinforcement, like a toy. Or if the session occurs during mealtime, a bite of food.
- If they dont perform the sign within 5 seconds, then gently guide their hands to perform the sign.
- Every time they perform the sign, give the reward. And repeat the sign yourself to reinforce it.
- Repeating this process for three sessions each day will quickly result in your child learning basic signs.
For more detailed information, there are websites with books and videos that offer instruction for parents, but theres usually a fee.

What Research Does The Nidcd Support On Asl And Other Sign Languages
The NIDCD supports research on ASL, including its acquisition and characterization. Funded research includes studies to understand sign languages grammar, acquisition, and development, and use of sign language when spoken language access is compromised by trauma or degenerative disease, or when speech is difficult to acquire due to early hearing loss or injury to the nervous system.

Study of sign language can also help scientists understand the neurobiology of language development. In one study, researchers reported that the building of complex phrases, whether signed or spoken, engaged the same brain areas. Better understanding of the neurobiology of language could provide a translational foundation for treating injury to the language system, for employing signs or gestures in therapy for children or adults, and for diagnosing language impairment in individuals who are deaf.
The NIDCD is also funding research on sign languages created among small communities of people with little to no outside influence. Emerging sign languages can be used to model the essential elements and organization of natural language and to learn about the complex interplay between natural human language abilities, language environment, and language learning outcomes. How Does Asl Compare With Spoken Language
ASL is a language completely separate and distinct from English. It contains all the fundamental features of language, with its own rules for pronunciation, word formation, and word order. While every language has ways of signaling different functions, such as asking a question rather than making a statement, languages differ in how this is done. For example, English speakers may ask a question by raising the pitch of their voices and by adjusting word order ASL users ask a question by raising their eyebrows, widening their eyes, and tilting their bodies forward.
Just as with other languages, specific ways of expressing ideas in ASL vary as much as ASL users themselves. In addition to individual differences in expression, ASL has regional accents and dialects just as certain English words are spoken differently in different parts of the country, ASL has regional variations in the rhythm of signing, pronunciation, slang, and signs used. Other sociological factors, including age and gender, can affect ASL usage and contribute to its variety, just as with spoken languages.
Fingerspelling is part of ASL and is used to spell out English words. In the fingerspelled alphabet, each letter corresponds to a distinct handshape. Fingerspelling is often used for proper names or to indicate the English word for something.

Not A Universal Language
There is no single sign language used around the world. Like spoken language, sign languages developed naturally through different groups of people interacting with each other, so there are many varieties. There are somewhere between 138 and 300 different types of sign language used around the globe today.
Interestingly, most countries that share the same spoken language do not necessarily have the same sign language as each other. English for example, has three varieties: American Sign Language , British Sign Language and Australian Sign Language .

Where Did Asl Originate
No person or committee invented ASL. The exact beginnings of ASL are not clear, but some suggest that it arose more than 200 years ago from the intermixing of local sign languages and French Sign Language . Todays ASL includes some elements of LSF plus the original local sign languages over time, these have melded and changed into a rich, complex, and mature language. Modern ASL and modern LSF are distinct languages. While they still contain some similar signs, they can no longer be understood by each others users.
