Youll notice that most of the time even when you investigate alarms quite carefully, there just isnt going to be anything there.
Potentially you mis-read an alarm message that wasnt actually there or in many cases its actually because the animals are actively evading you!
This is one of the most confusing parts of bird language to wrap your head around because you think youre hearing something, but then it seems to disappear before you solve the mystery.
This is because animals know bird language too!
And they are typically highly invested in not being seen by you, so they learn to move quietly in the shadowy dead-spaces.
Therefore while you practice your bird language skills, its highly recommended that you also practice moving in a more stealthy way through nature.
Your stealth in the forest comes down to two main things:

This is actually much less important than you might think, although it depends on how actively you try to investigate whats happening.
Moving quietly outside starts with some very physical techniques for balancing & centering your body weight so your footsteps cause less impact and noise on the forest floor.

Investigate Potential Alarm Scenarios
As you become more and more convinced that there are indeed alarms happening in the bushes, youll soon discover that simply being aware of alarms is really just the beginning.
Its entirely possible to be 100% confident that theres an alarm happening, and yet at the same time being unable to locate the animal at the source.
Bird alarm sequences can sometimes happen with incredible speed and subtlety.
Its also very common for animals to be extremely well hidden in the bushes or tree canopy.
So if you want to successfully match wits with a truly wild animal, you need to remember that most animals are actively trying to avoid being seen by you.
Invisibility & survival is a way of life for them and the ones who survive become incredibly skilled at living beyond the edge of normal human awareness.
So how do you actually investigate the alarms you discover while exploring bird language?
One of the key things is we need to get a feel for how different types of alarm patterns are moving through your landscape.
If you can determine how exactly an animal is moving just by listening to the gradual evolution of an alarm pattern this gives you one of the biggest clues youll need to actually position yourself in order to see it.
So in order to investigate alarm sequences, we really need to think critically about how animals move in the forest.

First Steps To Learn Bird Language: How To Get Started
Bird language is an amazing skill that isnt often taught. This is probably because its kind of an unusual skill.
Even though I would put it in the same category as something like animal tracking, most trackers dont really pay enough attention to birds in order to really learn bird language to any significant depth.
A lack of teachers means there really isnt a whole lot of information out there about how to get started in learning.
Its easy to fumble around and not really know what do to do or how to get started so Im going to share four basic aspects of practice that will help you start to learn bird language in your local area.
These are four simple things you can do that will help you expand your awareness over time into the subtle realms of bird vocalization.
If you do these things over and over again its like training your brain to gradually accumulate more and more information that results in being able to detect alarms at a distance and track down the animals causing the disturbance.

Media And Internet Influences
Due to promotional products, easy access to baby sign tutorial videos, and representations in popular culture, parental attempts at signing with their baby may be more focused on the popularity social aspects instead of an intention to potentially enhance their child’s communication skills.
A study examined the degree to which information about baby sign found on the internet was based on research. Results found thirty-three websites that all promoted baby sign and the benefits associated. Over 90% of the information referred to opinion articles or promotional products encouraging parents to sign, with little to no basis in research. Although websites claim that using baby sign will reduce tantrums, increase infantâs self-esteem, satisfaction, feelings of accomplishment, increase parent-child bonding, and decrease frustration, the sites do not provide enough research-based evidence to support these claims.
Commercial products available to parents participating in baby sign workshops or implementing it at home, are found to be comparable to the quality of products used in research studies. It is suggested that parents be cautious of baby sign products as it is difficult to tell the credibility of commercialized products for facilitating baby sign with your child.

Why It May Be Neither Beneficial Nor Harmful
Researchers have suggested the possibility of parents and experimenters being overly liberal in attributing sign or word status to early attempts at communication by children. Puccini and Liszkowski found that when infants associate labels with objects, they use verbal cues more frequently than gestures to make these associations. The process of further facilitating gesturing with baby signs is suggested to possibly cause interference toward children’s mapping of these words. This may be a result of infants lacking enough attention to take in these two types of information and process it at the same time. It is suggested that these labels, and further through the facilitation of baby sign, that it is unlikely that baby sign is facilitating speech development in infants.

Bird language is a multi-faceted skill requiring a combination of both knowledge about birds, and the ability to correlate patterns across interconnected systems in nature.
It requires using all five senses alongside critical thinking skills in a dynamic combination that most modern people dont ever learn at school.
Making this shift in awareness requires careful strategy in terms of how you listen and practice.
To make the learning process more natural, we can break bird language skills into 3 levels, where each level represents a dramatic leap in both the complexity and practical application of bird language.

A new database of 1,000-plus ASL signs and their lexical and phonological properties, developed by students and faculty at Tufts University and the Laboratory for Language and Cognitive Neuroscience at San Diego State University, won first place late last month in the peoples choice interactive category of the National Science Foundations 2017 Vizzies: Visualization Challenge, which recognizes visual conceptualizations that help general audiences understand complex ideas in science and engineering.
Called ASL-LEX, the project is the largest and most thorough database of ASL signs and meanings to date and is already being used by schools including the Learning Center for the Deaf in Framingham, Massachusetts, and Horace Mann School for the Deaf in Boston, Massachusetts, according to Ariel Goldberg, an associate professor of psychology who heads the Psycholinguistics and Linguistics Lab at Tufts.

Learn The Birds Of Your Study Area
Learning the birds for the purposes of bird language means learning to recognize the five voices of the birds in the various species that you see at your sit spot.
Furthermore, once you start tuning into alarms then there are all sorts of other distinctions that you can make within the alarm voice that tell you if the source is a cat or a hawk, or a human or whatever.
To help you figure out how the five voices work in the birds at your sit spot its really helpful to have some specific questions in the back of your mind that help point your awareness whenever you see or hear a bird.
Questions about identification: Who is that bird? Is it a Robin or a Junco? Male or female?
Questions about behavior: Is it feeding? Is it hiding? Is it singing? Where and when do these behaviors occur?
Questions about emotional State: Is the bird agitated or is it more at ease? How alert is it?
Questions that draw awareness to any associated vocalizations: What sounds are associated with the various behaviors or emotional states that you observe with the birds?
These questions will help you begin to distinguish how all the different species act when there are predators around versus when there are no predators in the area.

Level One: Bird Identification
Bird identification is a fairly common skill.
This is the most basic level of knowledge about birds, yet this is also where most people will focus the vast majority of their attention.
Its important to realize that while it can be quite useful to have some basic identification skills, the ability to identify birds doesnt actually have all that much to do with bird language.
At advanced levels, its possible to interpret bird alarm activity even without knowing the specific identity of a bird.
Bird language is a universal language of nature, which means that it works the same on every continent, whether or not you know the identity of birds giving the alarm calls.
Being able to identify birds by sight and sound does have some effect on overall nature appreciation, but it typically doesnt help you know when that bird is bringing you useful information.
So if we want to learn bird language, we need to go well beyond simple bird identification.
Level Two: Bird Behavior
The next level of bird language happens with the realization that, Hey, these birds are actually doing things that I can observe!
Examples of bird behavior include the ability to spot signs of nesting, singing, territorial behavior, feeding activity, migration patterns, even molting and seasonal movement.
These things all fall into the level of basic bird behavior.
This alone is a huge leap forward in terms of the depth of connection you experience with birds.
At this level, you start to gain a practical understanding of how bird activities change & evolve throughout the year.
You might look forward to the nesting season and watch with excitement during spring as your old friends come back from the migration.
Youll get to know the associated changes in behavior when eggs are being laid and all kinds of interesting things.
So bird behavior definitely represents a significant increase of appreciation and understanding about birds.
At this stage, you might even have your first experience of discovering bird alarm activity.
Very often this would be something like a group of Crows mobbing an Owl .
Yet even knowing how to observe bird behavior is still not deep enough to successfully apply the skill of bird language and locate animals by following alarms.
If we really want to experience the full expression of bird language, then we need to go even deeper and develop a complete knowledge of the subtle dynamics involved during alarm situations.
