So, I just found out that the International Day of Sign Languages is coming up and is set every year on the 23rd of September.
I have always been interested in learning sign language and just never really had the time to settle down and sign up to a course, but thats another story!
While doing some research I discovered that each country actually has its own version of sign language!
I dont know why I always thought sign language was a universal language, but I was WRONG.
Then I thought, is there a Chinese sign language? If so, where to learn it?

Perhaps as recently as two or three years ago, a deaf person would sign the word “Japanese” simply by twisting the little finger next to the eye.
But today, many of the more than 200,000 people who use American Sign Language avoid using this sign because it is a reference to a stereotypical physical feature, slanted eyes.
Instead, many deaf people here are adopting the Japanese’s sign for themselves: pressing the thumb and index fingers of both hands together and then pulling them apart, carving the silhouette of Japan into the air.

Its been a while since I last wrote about sign language, but some interesting YouTube videos by Alice recently pulled me back into it.
Below is the video that I found most fascinating. Its subtitled in Chinese, but worth a watch even if you dont read Chinese. Ill sum up the main points in English below the video.
Before I list Alices main points, I need to first explain some background. In the video, Alice discusses the Chinese sign language counterparts of the Chinese words and . The former is the most common way to refer to a Deaf person in Chinese, whereas the latter is the word many in the Chinese Deaf community wishes everyone would use. is the word for mute, and its definitely not polite.

I have to say, this video fascinated me. Theres so much there, linguistically . I think you can tell when a gifted orator makes a stirring speech in a foreign language, and this is the same feeling I get watching Alice deliver her message. Its inspiring.
Check out Alices other videos. Not all of them have Chinese subtitles, but one interesting one that does is an interview with Deaf rapper Signmark. Alice interviews him in international sign language.
I havent watched them all, but it looks like none of Alices videos to date have English subtitles. Im working on convincing her that it would be worthwhile.

Reading Chinese Signs: 6 Essential Words To Know
Signs are everywhere in public spaces in China. Being able to read them opens up a whole new world of understanding.
If you cant read Chinese at all, then you just do the best you can, getting information verbally.
But if you actually CAN read a lot of things in Chinese, and the signs STILL dont make sense, well, that can get extremely frustrating.
I dont know how many times Ive found myself in this position:
I see a sign written in Chinese. I know every character on that sign, except for ONE. Just one! But for the life of me, I cannot figure out what the sign means because of that ONE little character.
These days, in a situation like that, I can pull out my phone and quickly look up the character in my Pleco dictionary.
But Pleco didn’t exist back in the dark ages when I was in the thick of learning Chinese. I had to pull an actual paper dictionary out of my bag and manually search for a character that I didnt know how to pronounce. If I was inside a moving vehicle, forget about learning that character!
This happened all the time. Eventually, I started to suspect that I was looking up the same characters over and over again.

The very first person credited with the invention of the sign language was Pedro Ponce de León, a Spanish monk from the 16th century.
However, it is known that Native Americans used sign language as well before that to better communicate with other tribes and facilitate business with Europeans.
Building on Leóns work, another Spanish cleric, Juan Pablo Bonet, created a manual method to learn the alphabet, one shape representing one letter, which work was published in 1620.
In 1755, a French priest Charles-Michel de lÉpée invented an even more comprehensive method, even creating a signing dictionary.

I recently picked up a book on Chinese sign language called . Practicality was not a major consideration in the organization of the book it seems to be written by linguists for linguists. If I needed the book to actually communicate in Chinese sign language Id probably be pretty disgusted with it, but since my interest is primarily academic, Im enjoying it.
In its second chapter the book talks about fingerspelling . It runs through a variety of systems, including the earliest systems used in Chinese. Ive scanned the charts , which you see below.
First up is the two-handed British fingerspelling system, which was devised around 1790.
Then comes the one-handed American fingerspelling system. I remember learning this one when I was around 10.
Theres a Russian system as well.
Dont forget Japanese!
Chinese fingerspelling started well before pinyin, so the first system was based on Visible Speech, a system of phonetic notation devised by Alexander Melville Bell . This Chinese fingerspelling system was called .
If you compare similar sounds, such as B and P or D and T you can see how one detail holds phonetic meaning. In those cases, a movement of the thumb signifies aspiration. This is pretty cool from a linguistic perspective, although probably not the most practical system, because P and T look pretty hard to tell apart!
