Try to encourage him to work on expressing back to you, I want _______ for lunch, please! This exercise gives your child some autonomy while also teaching healthy food choices and good sentence structure!
- Signing with baby at mealtimes is a great way to begin. As you offer lunch simply say, It is lunch time! Lets eat! Sign lunch and see how fast your child begins to catch on.

How To Teach Sign Language To Infants And Toddlers
So how do parents teach these signs to their children, and which signs do they teach? There are several ways to teach babies how to sign.
One way thats been described is to follow these rules:
- Start at a young age, like 6 months. If your child is older, dont worry, as any age is appropriate to start signing.
- Try to keep sessions teaching sign language short, about 5 minutes each.
- First, perform the sign and say the word. For example, say the word more and perform the sign.
- If your baby performs the sign, then reward them with some sort of positive reinforcement, like a toy. Or if the session occurs during mealtime, a bite of food.
- If they dont perform the sign within 5 seconds, then gently guide their hands to perform the sign.
- Every time they perform the sign, give the reward. And repeat the sign yourself to reinforce it.
- Repeating this process for three sessions each day will quickly result in your child learning basic signs.
For more detailed information, there are websites with books and videos that offer instruction for parents, but theres usually a fee.
One website, Baby Signs Too, was started by the researchers who published the groundbreaking studies on infant and toddler sign language. Another similar website is Baby Sign Language.

Mother arrives today. She brings with her a fountain of knowledge, suspect kitchen gadgets and boundless love for her progeny. I wish I could say I am looking forward to many shared moments of cooking with her. Downloading age-old recipes passed through the generations. In my childhood, cross cultural home of an Afghani Delhi maternal side fused with growing up in West Bengal to a paternal Bengali side.
Well, I cant. Because I didnt learn how to cook from my mother. She hated being expected to cook and was far too busy being fabulous outside the kitchen. And we were both far more interested in stewing grand plans and brewing big ambitions than making chicken curry together when I was still living at home.
Cooking with mummy is, to me, the ultimate Indian cooking cliche. It kicked off in earnest with Bend it like Beckham and the Aloo gobi sequence and has taken a life of its own since. Ive lost track of how many time Ive been asked if my mother taught me how to cook. The answer is always a resounding no. Nobody taught me how to cook. I figured it out myself and still am, frankly. So are many of my friends from India. The ones who can be bothered to cook at all, that is.
So lets dispel this stereotype shall we? How did you learn to cook? Id love to know!
Ways To Get Your Child To Speak
Many of you have been interested in how to stimulate more speech from your toddlers so I thought I would share a few tricks I use as a speech therapist. Most often children just need a little more incentive to get them talking so I like to use what is known to speech therapists as Communicative Temptations.
There are many ways of tempting your child to speak. Here are 8 Communicative Temptations I have found helpful in therapy. After getting the idea of how this works, Im sure you will be able to come up with some of your own temptations. If you do and they seem to work for you, please share them with us.
1. Eat something your child loves in their presence with out offering them any. When your child indicates that they would like some, model a more advanced way for them to make the request, whether it is using a sign, a word or a simple phrase. For example, if your child points and grunts to the candy, model the sign for candy then wait and see if your child will imitate the sign candy. If your child simply keeps pointing and grunting take his/her hand and help him make the sign for candy then reward him/her with the candy.
3. At meal time and snack time give your child bite size portions, rather than dishing up a whole serving for them, then wait for them to request more. If no attempt is made model the sign more, help them make the sign, or model the /m/ sound for them to imitate.
