Best Method To Learn Is Definitely Communicative
As Ive said before, my usual imperfectionist approach of charging in, making a tonne of mistakes, but being social in the process has been extremely effective in learning sign language! Im more convinced than ever that natural social use of languages is the best way to learn any language. No exception
Next time some arrogant academic insists on studying and other wasteful and antisocial activities as the core of language learning, Id like to ask them how the hell theyd learn ASL that way ð
American Sign Language: Its Not All In The Hands

Quick note: In case you missed the announcement for what my next language mission is in the e-mail list, dont forget to like Fluent in 3 months to see it in your Facebook stream tomorrow! Ill also announce it tomorrow.
On Saturday I went to the Deaf Night Out here in Austin, where almost everyone were deaf or hard-of-hearing. After about just 2-3 weeks of part-time work on American Sign Language , I was able to participate in conversations with several people about many topics and even joke, all without ever speaking.
This has definitely been a successful mission!
ASL has quickly become my favourite language and I look forward to spending another month in the states later this year to continue working on it .
Although Ive still got a lot to learn, I thought you might find an overview of the language interesting based on talking to people about this mission and my own preconceptions, I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about how ASL works!
I learned everything here from actual interaction with deaf people and not from books.

Make An Interesting Statement
If you do not have a personal story to share with the audience, consider sharing a thought-provoking fact about your presentation’s relevance. If you decide to go forward with this approach, make sure to deliver your statement with confident body language and verbal tone.
Stand up straight and keep your hands out of your pockets. It might help to think about delivering this as if you were telling your coworkers or peers about the news you just learned that affects them. You want your audience to know what you are saying is both truthful and interesting.
What Research Does The Nidcd Support On Asl And Other Sign Languages
The NIDCD supports research on ASL, including its acquisition and characterization. Funded research includes studies to understand sign languages grammar, acquisition, and development, and use of sign language when spoken language access is compromised by trauma or degenerative disease, or when speech is difficult to acquire due to early hearing loss or injury to the nervous system.

Study of sign language can also help scientists understand the neurobiology of language development. In one study, researchers reported that the building of complex phrases, whether signed or spoken, engaged the same brain areas. Better understanding of the neurobiology of language could provide a translational foundation for treating injury to the language system, for employing signs or gestures in therapy for children or adults, and for diagnosing language impairment in individuals who are deaf.
The NIDCD is also funding research on sign languages created among small communities of people with little to no outside influence. Emerging sign languages can be used to model the essential elements and organization of natural language and to learn about the complex interplay between natural human language abilities, language environment, and language learning outcomes. Visit the NIH Clinical Research Trials and You website to read about these and other clinical trials that are recruiting volunteers.

Name Signs For Those Who Use American Sign Language
Our reader Amy is deaf, and was recently sharing with me how name signs are bestowed, which I thought youd all find as interesting as I do:
So interesting, right? I always wondered how people got their name signs! I took Sign Language classes for years before and during college, which were taught by a hearing interpreter, so she knew a lot but she wasnt deaf and I didnt know to ask about this this is all new to me!
I also really like how the name signs are tied to a characteristic that is particular to each individual, and how it Sometimes it can takes months or longer while you wait for the right one to come along. It feels really affectionate to me because it requires observation of the person you have to really *know* him or her.
Amy also told me, which I hadnt known, that St. Francis de Sales is the patron of the deaf such a cool thing to know! I love him! I looked him up, just to see if I could find an explanation for this particular patronage, and found this amazing tidbit:
His simple, clear explanations of Catholic doctrine, and his gentle way with everyone, brought many back to the Roman Church. He even used sign language in order to bring the message to the deaf, leading to his patronage of deaf people.
Do any of you know anyone with a name sign, and if so, what is it/how did they get it?
Thanks to Amy for writing this up for us!!

How Does Asl Compare With Spoken Language
ASL is a language completely separate and distinct from English. It contains all the fundamental features of language, with its own rules for pronunciation, word formation, and word order. While every language has ways of signaling different functions, such as asking a question rather than making a statement, languages differ in how this is done. For example, English speakers may ask a question by raising the pitch of their voices and by adjusting word order ASL users ask a question by raising their eyebrows, widening their eyes, and tilting their bodies forward.
Just as with other languages, specific ways of expressing ideas in ASL vary as much as ASL users themselves. In addition to individual differences in expression, ASL has regional accents and dialects just as certain English words are spoken differently in different parts of the country, ASL has regional variations in the rhythm of signing, pronunciation, slang, and signs used. Other sociological factors, including age and gender, can affect ASL usage and contribute to its variety, just as with spoken languages.
Fingerspelling is part of ASL and is used to spell out English words. In the fingerspelled alphabet, each letter corresponds to a distinct handshape. Fingerspelling is often used for proper names or to indicate the English word for something.

Pointing In Space To Refer To Someone
When you are signing directly to someone, you often just sign YOU to refer to the person you are talking with and ME to refer to yourself.
When you are talking about someone else who is NOT there, you may use a similar technique, called pointing in space. In this case, you would identify the person by fingerspelling their name , and then pointing at a location in space . The first point marks the space that represents the person you named. After which, when refering to the person in the conversation, you can just point to the location you marked. This is another big time saver when refering to someone many times during a conversation.

When Do You Receive Your Sign Name
If you are born in a deaf family, like me, your parents will choose your sign name. It could take days or months to assign you a sign name! It is a different process from your given name.
In my case, I have a little scar at the corner of my eye because when I was a baby, I fell and hit the corner of a chair. Since then, my sign name is like if you were scratching the corner of your eye with your finger.
If you are a hearing person that has not had a close contact or relation within the Deaf community, you might be given a sign name as an adult, and it must always come from a member of the Deaf community. To be given a sign name is an honour to be accepted graciously.
Normally you will use your sign name to introduce yourself or to be introduced, and you will need to fingerspell your birth name first. After that you will sign your sign name, i.e.: Hi, my name is E-L-I-S-A and then scratch the corner of my eye with my finger. After that you might want to give an explanation to your sign name.
