What Is American Sign Language
American Sign Language is a complete, natural language that has the same linguistic properties as spoken languages, with grammar that differs from English. ASL is expressed by movements of the hands and face. It is the primary language of many North Americans who are deaf and hard of hearing and is used by some hearing people as well.

How Do Most Children Learn Asl
Parents are often the source of a childs early acquisition of language, but for children who are deaf, additional people may be models for language acquisition. A deaf child born to parents who are deaf and who already use ASL will begin to acquire ASL as naturally as a hearing child picks up spoken language from hearing parents. However, for a deaf child with hearing parents who have no prior experience with ASL, language may be acquired differently. In fact, 9 out of 10 children who are born deaf are born to parents who hear. Some hearing parents choose to introduce sign language to their deaf children. Hearing parents who choose to have their child learn sign language often learn it along with their child. Children who are deaf and have hearing parents often learn sign language through deaf peers and become fluent.
How Does Asl Compare With Spoken Language
ASL is a language completely separate and distinct from English. It contains all the fundamental features of language, with its own rules for pronunciation, word formation, and word order. While every language has ways of signaling different functions, such as asking a question rather than making a statement, languages differ in how this is done. For example, English speakers may ask a question by raising the pitch of their voices and by adjusting word order ASL users ask a question by raising their eyebrows, widening their eyes, and tilting their bodies forward.
Just as with other languages, specific ways of expressing ideas in ASL vary as much as ASL users themselves. In addition to individual differences in expression, ASL has regional accents and dialects just as certain English words are spoken differently in different parts of the country, ASL has regional variations in the rhythm of signing, pronunciation, slang, and signs used. Other sociological factors, including age and gender, can affect ASL usage and contribute to its variety, just as with spoken languages.
Fingerspelling is part of ASL and is used to spell out English words. In the fingerspelled alphabet, each letter corresponds to a distinct handshape. Fingerspelling is often used for proper names or to indicate the English word for something.

Not Actually 100% Sign Language
The first thing to note is that it is not actually all in the hands. People presume that sign language is just a more complex form of the game charades. The sign for house looks like a house, therefore every word looks in some way like what it describes, right?
The problem with this is that you can’t sign concepts like if, since and so on so easily. But conventions mean that signs for these words do of course exist. You learn them and then you’ll recognise and be able to use them, even if the reason they look they way they do may not be so apparent at first.
What I found much more interesting was discovering that a vast amount of sign language is not actually in how you shape or move your hands. There are several other factors at play, a few of which include:
You quickly learn that you should actually have most of your focus on the person’s FACE as they are signing. Of course their hands are crucial, but facial expressions introduce both important sense to a conversation and actually dramatically affect the end-meaning.
- Eyebrows: Raised eyebrows are used for Yes/No questions and when talking about something positive. When you furrow your brow this indicates you are asking a WH- question or perhaps talking about something negative.
With this in mind, the sign is the same for Here and What. But you must furrow your brow when it’s the latter .
There are even other ways you can express yourself using various facial muscles and even your tongue!
Where Did Asl Originate
No person or committee invented ASL. The exact beginnings of ASL are not clear, but some suggest that it arose more than 200 years ago from the intermixing of local sign languages and French Sign Language . Todays ASL includes some elements of LSF plus the original local sign languages over time, these have melded and changed into a rich, complex, and mature language. Modern ASL and modern LSF are distinct languages. While they still contain some similar signs, they can no longer be understood by each others users.

So interesting, right? I always wondered how people got their name signs! I took Sign Language classes for years before and during college, which were taught by a hearing interpreter, so she knew a lot but she wasnt deaf and I didnt know to ask about this this is all new to me!
I also really like how the name signs are tied to a characteristic that is particular to each individual, and how it Sometimes it can takes months or longer while you wait for the right one to come along. It feels really affectionate to me because it requires observation of the person you have to really *know* him or her.
Amy also told me, which I hadnt known, that St. Francis de Sales is the patron of the deaf such a cool thing to know! I love him! I looked him up, just to see if I could find an explanation for this particular patronage, and found this amazing tidbit:
His simple, clear explanations of Catholic doctrine, and his gentle way with everyone, brought many back to the Roman Church. He even used sign language in order to bring the message to the deaf, leading to his patronage of deaf people.

When Do You Receive Your Sign Name
If you are born in a deaf family, like me, your parents will choose your sign name. It could take days or months to assign you a sign name! It is a different process from your given name.
In my case, I have a little scar at the corner of my eye because when I was a baby, I fell and hit the corner of a chair. Since then, my sign name is like if you were scratching the corner of your eye with your finger.
If you are a hearing person that has not had a close contact or relation within the Deaf community, you might be given a sign name as an adult, and it must always come from a member of the Deaf community. To be given a sign name is an honour to be accepted graciously.
Normally you will use your sign name to introduce yourself or to be introduced, and you will need to fingerspell your birth name first. After that you will sign your sign name, i.e.: Hi, my name is E-L-I-S-A and then scratch the corner of my eye with my finger. After that you might want to give an explanation to your sign name.

On Saturday I went to the Deaf Night Out here in Austin, where almost everyone were deaf or hard-of-hearing. After about just 2-3 weeks of part-time work on American Sign Language , I was able to participate in conversations with several people about many topics and even joke, all without ever speaking.
This has definitely been a successful mission!
ASL has quickly become my favourite language and I look forward to spending another month in the states later this year to continue working on it .
Although I’ve still got a lot to learn, I thought you might find an overview of the language interesting based on talking to people about this mission and my own preconceptions, I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about how ASL works!
I learned everything here from actual interaction with deaf people and not from books.
