Name Signs For Those Who Use American Sign Language
Our reader Amy is deaf, and was recently sharing with me how name signs are bestowed, which I thought youd all find as interesting as I do:
So interesting, right? I always wondered how people got their name signs! I took Sign Language classes for years before and during college, which were taught by a hearing interpreter, so she knew a lot but she wasnt deaf and I didnt know to ask about this this is all new to me!
I also really like how the name signs are tied to a characteristic that is particular to each individual, and how it Sometimes it can takes months or longer while you wait for the right one to come along. It feels really affectionate to me because it requires observation of the person you have to really *know* him or her.
Amy also told me, which I hadnt known, that St. Francis de Sales is the patron of the deaf such a cool thing to know! I love him! I looked him up, just to see if I could find an explanation for this particular patronage, and found this amazing tidbit:
His simple, clear explanations of Catholic doctrine, and his gentle way with everyone, brought many back to the Roman Church. He even used sign language in order to bring the message to the deaf, leading to his patronage of deaf people.

Asking What One’s Name Is
There are several ways of expressing this sentence in ASL, such as what you name?, you name what?, you name, you? and a few variants. In all these wh-questions, the burrowed eyebrows and the slightly forwarded head indicate a wh-question mark.

Another variant sometimes omitting WHAT: YOU NAME, YOU? with burrowed eyebrows in less formal register.

How To Fingerspell The Alphabet In American Sign Language

American Sign Language uses one-handed signals to form the letters in the alphabet. Its easy to learn and useful to know. You can use fingerspelling to spell out words that you dont know the sign for yet. Take it slow and practice one chunk of the alphabet at a time. Build up with practice until you can fingerspell the whole alphabet in sequence.

Do You Spell Out Words In Sign Language
A sign language does not have an alphabet instead, you can spell a few letters by letter to communicate with them. There are many languages, such as American Sign Language, which use gestures and movements to illustrate concepts and words. Because ASL contains no foreign language, it has nothing in common with the English language.
Fingerspelling A Full Name
In some cases such as formal settings, when introducing, one fingerspells a full name.
How does one indicate a space between two names, between Ms/Mr and a surname or between two words in general when fingerspelling? Spell with a slight pause and slight nod between the forename and surname or other two things. In reality, it’s very subtle that one has to be sensitive to the rhythm or intonation.

Learner tip: Do not fingerspell a first name then sign “LAST NAME” then fingerspell the surname. One may use this way occasionally in some contexts . But, it’s not recommended in general or everyday interactions.

Learn Your Name In Irish Sign Language

Did you know it is the third official language of Ireland? After English and Irish. It is also the first and/or preferred language of 5,000 Deaf people in Ireland. Approximately 40,000 people in general will communicate in ISL.
Use either the pictures below or the slideshow above to help master the ISL alphabet. You might notice that some of the letters are static and others are moving, letters such as, “J” “X” and “Z”.

Signs For Common Names
My name is John, which, as you may guess, is a pretty common name. The benefit of having a common name growing up is that whenever I went into a gift shop that had items with names on them, such as cups, buttons, belts, or what-have-you, I could always find one with my name on it. In sign langage, unlike the items in the gift shop, there is no sign for John. That is, there is no specific sign that can be used for everyone who has the name John .

Hello, my name is Diana. Did you notice how I signed my name? The upper part of the letter D tapping my chin, Diana. Well, today I want to talk about name signs in American Sign Language.
Name signs have a rich cultural heritage within the Deaf community, and I have found researching those naming practices fascinating. This research was pioneered by Sam Suppala in his book The Book of Name Signs. Id like to tell you some of what he discovered and share my own experiences with this core value of the Deaf community.
Ive shown you my name sign, Diana. I also have two sisters Debbie and Dawn. Their name signs are Ds that tap on the shoulder and chest area respectively. We have these name signs because they were given to us by Deaf people, in our case our parents. When they were expecting a new baby our parents would discuss what they wanted to name their new child. An English name that would appear on the birth certificate and an ASL name that was represented by a sign they came up with. I dont know if they originally planned on having us three girls, but I do know that they carefully planned out our names in ASL.

Where Did Asl Originate
No person or committee invented ASL. The exact beginnings of ASL are not clear, but some suggest that it arose more than 200 years ago from the intermixing of local sign languages and French Sign Language . Todays ASL includes some elements of LSF plus the original local sign languages over time, these have melded and changed into a rich, complex, and mature language. Modern ASL and modern LSF are distinct languages. While they still contain some similar signs, they can no longer be understood by each others users.

See the image that explains the meaning of these symbols. First of all, remember that reading ASL is from the signer’s perspective, not a listener. It’s the same way a writer scribes from the author’s voice. That is, an ASL-speaking person reads written ASL from the author’s voice .
The sentence is glossed as “IX-me KISSFIST fs-ASL”.
Terminology: Digibet in ASL writing is equivalent to alphabet digits are the ASL equivalent of the English alphabetical letters. In ASL, there are over 50 handshape primes, plus a set of movement symbols, and locative symbols comparatively, there are about 42 phonemes in English. The number of phonemes is reduced to 26 letters. It wouldn’t be surprising that the number would be also reduced a bit in ASL writing.

In the first sentence, you might recognize the first symbol as you just previously learned. Some of you might recognize the second symbol . It’s NAME . The third part in this sentence is a fingerspelled name: JOLANTA.
That is, it’s glossed as IX-me NAME fs-JOLANTA.

How Do Most Children Learn Asl
Parents are often the source of a childs early acquisition of language, but for children who are deaf, additional people may be models for language acquisition. A deaf child born to parents who are deaf and who already use ASL will begin to acquire ASL as naturally as a hearing child picks up spoken language from hearing parents. However, for a deaf child with hearing parents who have no prior experience with ASL, language may be acquired differently. In fact, 9 out of 10 children who are born deaf are born to parents who hear. Some hearing parents choose to introduce sign language to their deaf children. Hearing parents who choose to have their child learn sign language often learn it along with their child. Children who are deaf and have hearing parents often learn sign language through deaf peers and become fluent.
Why Emphasize Early Language Learning
Parents should expose a deaf or hard-of-hearing child to language as soon as possible. The earlier a child is exposed to and begins to acquire language, the better that childs language, cognitive, and social development will become. Research suggests that the first few years of life are the most crucial to a childs development of language skills, and even the early months of life can be important for establishing successful communication with caregivers. Thanks to screening programs in place at almost all hospitals in the United States and its territories, newborn babies are tested for hearing before they leave the hospital. If a baby has hearing loss, this screening gives parents an opportunity to learn about communication options. Parents can then start their childs language learning process during this important early stage of development.
